Getting tired of the damn parking lot!!!!

[Begin Rant]
okay since I've gotten my bike, I've only put about 200 miles on it, because I've been stuck in parking lots.
I havent gotten a license yet (do have a permit, i'm 17 so taking the MSF didnt give me a license automatically). So I can't legally go out on the street without another "licensed motorcyclist" within 100 feet of me. by that law, I wouldnt be able to leave my driveway. well anyways I bend the law a bit, ride around the neighborhood, and on the main road a little bit to get to parking lots. that was fine, fun for a bit, but now I'm SICK of it! and I can't go down to the DMV to get the license legally because I don't know anyone that rides.

any advice? would the DMV care if i just said screw the permit law and showed up w/o a licensed rider?

(of course i could take the bike there in a truck or something but that seems like a last resort, I'd rather not transport it unless I had to)

This sux.

We need to find a TWFer near this guy and get him riding. Someone has got to live near him so they can escort him to the DMV.

The DMV here doesn't care if you show up without a licensed rider, fail the test, and ride back home without a licensed rider. I see it happen all the time.

So do you still have to do the ridden test for the DMV? Is that why you need your motorcycle there? I'd say if you can't get an escort and you have a time set to take the riding test then just show up about 30-45 min early and say that your "escort" left you there. Then just pass the test and ride away legally. Here in MI the MSF completion certificate gets you out of only the riding portion of the DMV test, but after that I only had to do the written portion. So I finished MSF on a Sunday and did the written test at the DMV and had my cycle endorsement by 9:15 that Monday morning. (Oh yeah, I rode my motorcycle to the DMV, but then again it is less than 1/4 of a mile from my apartment and most of that is parking lot ) It may be different because you're 17 and I don't know what IL laws are about all that. :luck: If I were closer I'd help ya myself...

:withstupi Just drive your car there and take the test. The MSF class should have given you a certificate to wave the ridding part.

no, since I'm < 18 I still have to take the written AND riding tests at the DMV. hence the problem of getting a bike there, legally.

I doubt they would refuse giving me a test, but I dunno those dmv ppl are pretty crabby sometimes... maybe I'll put on a really innocent face and start crying or something.

it sux getting into riding when none of my friends much less anyone I know rides. most of the advice that i get is from u guys. :twfrox:

Hey when do you want to go? Im usually up for a road trip. Im laid off right now so I got some time on my hands. The ol lady wants me to work on the house but thats not as much fun as riding, and cost more money to. Champaign is somewhere around 2 1/2 from here, but my brother lives in Bloomington so I could shoot down to visit him then shoot over there. I think its only about 45 min from bloomington. Also I don't know about there but if you show up here with out a escort the usually fail you on the spot. Well at least thats what happened to a buddy of mine. I might see if another buddy of mine wants to make the trip and we could maybe cruise around Champaign for a little or something. (don't worry we aren't crazy or anything you would be able to keep up fine) We ride with another guy with a GS500 and he has no trouble keeping pace with us. especially through town. Just check with the DMV cause around here its hard to find a time when they are able to do the test. We can set a time and date and then call the DMV and make sure that date works for them and we can go from there. Just let me know.

I'm not suggesting this... and when I did... I knew about 80% of the police in my town.

I rode with nothing but my slip for my upcoming MSF coarse for like 2 months. Out on the rode and everything. No problems, took my MSF, took my DMV written test... BAM been riding legally ever sense!

Just schedule it and ride down. If they send you packing call Frost to come down on the road trip.

hmmm, did you call the DMV and see if they have a program with senior riders for these things?? I know down here, at least for us, we have a program on base so that my hubby could have an escort on base for the 1st 6 months... a base requirement (not that anyone does it, you can never get together with the senior rider when you want to ride!!) but that may be an option...

well I just called the dmv and they have motorcycle license tests whenever they are open, u just walk in. I asked whether u need an escort and if its a problem if I come there on a permit for the purpose of the license test, she said "If you get stopped its a problem because you're driving illegally but we're not law enforcement" I guess that means they'll look the other way? I have no idea.

frostz, it would be really awesome to have someone to ride with, but I'm gonna see what I can do first, whether its a good idea to ride there myself or i should just play it safe and try to find an escort around here. but somehow, while it would be fun, asking someone like you to come ALL the way here for what will be a 10 minute drive to the DMV seems unfair.

I'm thinking I'd take some back roads to avoid traffic (and the popo  ) and just go there. but I'm unsure what would happen when I get there, whether they'd turn me away or what. also is there anything like "you only have 3 chances" for MC tests like there is for drivers tests?

yeah that normally means "what we dont know wont hurt you!!"...why dont you have your dad follow you there, just in case, and then when you go in he will be there so it looks like you had an escort. As long as he is there they will probably assume he followed you on his bike...but thats just my :2cents:

or try and find someone that rides, is there anyone in your neighborhood maybe? it is never hard to compliment someone on thier bike, get a convo going and then slip in there, hey this is what I am doing, got any ideas?? since that person will be local they may know better than us or volunteer to help you themselves!!!

That sux, that you need an escort. I had to renew my driver’s license, and since I was already there I decided to take the written test for a motorcycle license, failed first time, picked up a DMV Riders hand book, went back in 20 mins. later, passed.been riding on a permit since Jan. here in so. cal. the only restrictions are no night riding, no highway riding, and no passengers unless it’s a certified instructor. been riding on a permit since Jan. my first MSF class is this Saturday. good luck with the DMV

unfortunately around here the permit is valid only when you are within 100 feet of a licensed motorcyclist over the age of 21. :bash: :bash: man I wish illinois permits were more like california permits.

Rae thats exactly my plan. I even just drove the route to the DMV (in a car) to make sure theres no surprises.

great now I'm getting nervous about the riding test. I'd hate to go to all that trouble and then fail the riding test. hopefully the writing should be a breeze like the permit written test.

see?? great minds think alike!!! Dont worry, just remember to stay calm and focus on what you are doing!! You will do great, if at first you dont succeed...go back and try it again the next day...:dthumb:

Hey well I don't think you should have much trouble if you take some back roads and stuff and it sounds like the DMV there doesn't really care to much. SO I say GO FOR IT!!!! Don't worry too much about the driving portion. Its really not hard at all. If youve been doing a lot of parking lot riding youll be fine. Its really quite easy. If you do run into any problems shoot me a PM I can head down there. I appreciate your consideration for me coming all the way down there. But just so you know today I left the house around 9AM and just got back now its about 8PM right now. I had no particular destination and half the time didn't even really know where I was. This time I headed North but if ya need an escort I could easy head south next time. Im sure everything will work out fine for you but if theres anything I can do to help just let me know. Always glad to help out another rider. Especially a TWF rider. P.S. Im wearing my JR jacket right now too. Don't know why just like it.

That's exactly what I did.

You gotta do what you gotta do. You won't always have someone around to hold your hand.

If you get pulled over, just be polite and totally honest with the cop. Tell him you're on your way to take the test right now. If you're cool about it, he may even let you go.

Go sit in a parking lot the points towards the DMV and when a bike comes by jump out on the road and get within a 100 feet of him then pull into the DMV now your back on private property. See no problem.

the ride there was easy (no cops  ) and i kept it in the speed limit. I was at the DMV for prolly an hour 10 mins (thats REALLY good, usually im there for 3). Plus, one of my friends was working there (apparently his mom is the boss there so he got a job) so that made things easier. Also the lady that gave me the test was pretty nice about it and even came and talked to me, said i did real good, and it was a good idea to take the MRC. nobody asked me AT ALL the whole time i was there HOW i got there, but my dad was there with me.

on the way back i opened it up (a little), it felt GREAT (yea i know, irresponsible of me but w/e  ). MAN it feels GOOD to be riding!!!!!! I have a smile a mile wide right now.
