GSXR1000DJ 10-06-2004, 01:28 PM As I was riding today, I was on the freeway and was able to get her up to 135+MPH. As I hit this speed I started to feel a little shaking in the front. The handle bars were just a bit shakey. I want to try to max her out before the season is over so i can get a few mods done over winter and come spring see if I can top my old speed. Does this happen to anyone else as well with it shaking at high speeds. I started to feel it at 135 and it stayed the same up a few more mph. Any ideas on this guys??
twisty 10-06-2004, 01:29 PM Steering head bearings...How many miles do you have? Check you tires for pressure and cupping also.

Tire pressure is good. Just had it check less then a month ago. My bike has a little over 13,000 miles on it.
twisty 10-06-2004, 01:34 PM huuummm got some friends? I would see if te steering head maybe in need of some grease or bearings.....
valpoboyzkenny 10-06-2004, 01:36 PM Could be the tire out of balance.
GSXR1000DJ 10-06-2004, 01:39 PM Could be the tire out of balance.
Would I only feel it at the speed only or all speeds??
twisty 10-06-2004, 01:42 PM Higher speeds
GSXR1000DJ 10-06-2004, 02:02 PM So it may be the balance then. Or...
Need4Speed 10-06-2004, 02:37 PM Ive read about others with this problem, sometimes only feeling it at lower speeds, turned out to be the bearings! just me :2cents:
GSXR1000DJ 10-06-2004, 02:41 PM Ok I will have the bearing and the balance checked out. Thanks for the good info. :)

Did you ever think maybe it was caused by flippin going 135 MPH on a Penn. Freeway??
GSXR1000DJ 10-06-2004, 05:12 PM Did you ever think maybe it was caused by flippin going 135 MPH on a Penn. Freeway??

yeah, it cant be that..PA roads rock!! literally

Well do. But after it is fixed and no more shaking...its on. :D
larryg 10-06-2004, 11:11 PM First of all, I don't recommend doing those speeds on public roads, the best way to see if mods have improved power is with a dyno. That said, the first things I would check is your steering head bearings, tire pressure, wear, and balance (all already mentioned).
More than likely, it is your steering head bearings that need to be tightened. If it isn't, I would look at your steering damper (depending on the year of your bike, you should have one stock) or possibly the suspension. If the bike is unloading the front too much under acceleration it can become unstable or if you have lowered the front too much it can get twitchy.

Thanks larry for the info. I will be getting it looked at soon and see what is up with it. I will try the dyno and see if there isn't somewhere safe to take it as well to see what speed she tops out in.
Gas Man 10-07-2004, 06:12 AM I would never do anything like that without a Scotts Steering Stabalizer. They rock!
I took a buddies 954 out once and when the front end un-loaded under hard acceleration it broke loss like a mofo! Scared the Crapp rite out of me at about 130 and again at 150. I'm talkin nearly a tank slapper at those speeds. OUCH!! It sucked more because it was not my bike. The buddy had just got it and it was doing it to him a bit so I said, get off and I'll show you how to drive. So I let him drive my truck and get out in front of me then I punched the 954 by him. He was doin about 90 when I came by him at about 140 with head shake from he11. "whee, that puckered up my butthole"!!!! Found out later that on the '02 954 they used tapered roller bearings in the head that made it super loose...needless to say they went back to standard roller bearing in '03. Not really a help to the problem but a good story.. :jacked:

I think that 954 story is a combination of operator error and the fact that you and Super's bike do not mix well - like gas and water and being the gas guru you should know what I mean. Stay off the Hondas and especially Super's Honda and stick with the Kaw. Let me see - near tank slapper at 130 and 150, turn signal falling off - yeah quit while you are ahead bro!
GSXR1000DJ 10-07-2004, 05:38 PM Went out riding again today and didn't take her up to the same speed as yesterday but close and nothing. No shaking or wobbles. I am hoping it was just a little bumpy in the road. I will still get the bearings checked out to be safe and the presure one more time along with balancing. Thanks to all for your info. :dthumb:

That story wasn't from Super's honda. He has a '03 and as I said they fixed that problem. I was nice on Super's, besides the little wheelies I was doing on Telegraph waiting for everybody else to catch up to Twisty and I ...
bumblebee 10-07-2004, 07:21 PM Gee you guys are lucky my poor little F4i will only haul my fat a$$ up to about 125 before it starts groaning. Of course, It still has about 3000 RPM left to Deestruct. Maybe it's just that I am chicken to go any faster to get to speeds that will suck the tears out of my eyes.

There are two things that I like Wide Open - my R6 and my woman.. lol..
Oh yeah Gasman you were nice to Super's bike just like you were "nice" to my R6 when you "forgot" to shift.. When can I ride that Kaw of yours? I will be nice to it or is there some kind of a hidden trust issue here? What "little" wheelies are you referring to because I was right on your a$$ on Tele and 8 mile and I didn't see a f**king thing - Twisty was up front, you second me third - maybe Twisty can caloborate your wheelie story but I can't.. Maybe just because I wasn't paying attention and pretty much seeing how close I could get to bouncing it off the rev limiter before I shifted. But you weren't waiting for me brother because I could have passed you at any moment but I held formation. Who's 954 were you referring to then?
Gas Man 10-08-2004, 06:01 AM A buddy of mine has a 954 and I rode it like 3 times. Little wheelie aka bunny hops. The order was somin like that. But I think it was Twisty, Me, Pippi, you.... Come on, I'm not going to pull a big arse wheelie on somebody elses bike. I don't even pull em on my bike as of yet. I'll pull it way up but I really don't hold it...too much of a scardy cat I suppose. I think of it, but then I think...I really don't have the time in my schedule today to crash so I'll wait till next time. But my sked is never that clear.....one of these days...
Want to take out the Kaw....let me know, next time were out. I'll just have to make sure you leave your MP3 player at home, the tires are nice and warm, and dry. O, and keep you away from arsehole truckers and mud....is that all of it. O, and to be fair, let's make it in the city so there isn't any deer and lots of gas stations around...
Mudpuppy 10-08-2004, 11:26 AM Ok sounds good - only the Yamaha is a mud magnet and I learned my lesson on the cold tires - never again.
Gas Man 10-08-2004, 01:50 PM Sweet! Maybe once I ride the R6 again, he'll let me work for him in '08!! everybody, keep your fingers crossed that he does. I'm going to take a pic with the camera phone for evidence. O, and a pic of him on my Kaw for black mailing... hehe

if u can get a pic of him on the kawa..ur a shoe-in for an cabinet position in 08.....!! but if you cant get him to ride..even a pic of him standing beside it might do the trick..

I'm not saying I haven't gone those speeds (and enjoyed it). My point was only that there are better ways to test changes you make to the bike. Just because 135 is your indicated max now and then several months later, after making some changes, you go an indicated 140, did you really improve the power of the bike?
Not only that, but testing a new piece of equipment at those speeds on public roads offers a potential for disaster if you have a failure. I believe the best and safest way to test a change is to dyno the bike, make a change, and dyno it again. Keeping the before/after runs as close together as possible and keeping other variables as consistant as possible will provide a more accurate evaluation of the work done. Plus you get the added benefit of testing in a controlled environement where a failure hopefully will not cause you physical damage.
Just my :2cents:

Oh 135 was not my max by far on this bike. But I do understand what you mean about using a dyno to see the real power changes before and after all the mods are done. I hope they give me a break on price for it also. :D Dynoing can get pretty costly.
Need4Speed 10-31-2004, 12:01 AM 135 + for the excitement..absolutely...to test out something on the bike out on the street!! Yikes, no thanks....
