Hi, first post and I'm too impacient to read the newbie posts, so sorry if this is in the wrong section.
Anyways, I'm definately new to riding bikes, but have riddin them in the past and have a pretty good understanding of how to ride, just a little inexperienced and not fully comfortable on one (like hard corners, etc..) I've been riding my friends 95 YZF 600 for the last month a lot and really like how it runs and responsiveness of the trottle. I went and looked at a 2000 Buell Blast (14k) that the kid is asking $1300 bo for. I'm pretty sure I can get it for $7-900 and I've been doing a little research on them, but thought I would post the question. Should I buy the Buell because I can get it cheap or wait and buy an older 600 GSXR/Ninja/CBR/YZF?
The Buell kind of felt like a scooter with gears and it ran kind of ruff, but I wasn't sure if that was just the symptom of having half a V-Twin engine? Exhaust was loud too, in the bad way. Anyways, sorry for writing such a long thread. Was just thinking I could get a cheap bike, but wasn't sure if I was going to be spoiled after riding the YZF. Thanks.

I love the Buells but do not recommend them for a newbie as you have described your self. They are very aggressive in the handling but have quirks that seasoned riders might never come to terms with. The Twin is defiantly a ruff running motor compared to the inline 4's. Plus it may not be running right. It may be a good deal but I just cant recommend it.

look up some recent posts by oldtymebiker, he has added alot of good stuff on this topic and its worth reading more then once, as for the blast, i would wait and look around for a used sv or gs, they get great gas mileage and are damn good time to ride with no hidden quirks, the sv has huge hop-up potential too

I thought the Blast was a beginers bike? I know it's a 500cc, but it's only a one cylinder, so I didn't think it was as aggresive as the 1200? I've handled the YZF fine and I'm not planning on racing the thing or doing crazy speed, but being 6'1" 215lbs. I wasn't sure if the Blast was a good fit.

I was acutally talking to a harley / buell salesman when my friend was shopping cruisers. he said that the Buell 500 absolutely sucked at speeds. (she was shopping the harley line and I already knew I was getting the zuk - so he was honest about the buell line). He said a resonably sized man (over 160) shouldn't even take it on a highway. At 75 mph with a grown man in gear it would vibrate heavily, and have almost no throttle response left. If you want to play around on two lane roads, it's OK, but if you want the versitility of a commuting bike for city and highway, and a bike to grow with, look at the SV650 either the S or the naked. Plenty of potential.

It is a beginners bike for power and that's it. It was built on a solid race platform and the short wheel base make it very unforgiving if you screw up.
All the Buells are fun to ride because of the massive torque they make. They do actually handle very well. Just no room for error.

It was definately a bike that I felt wasn't going to do it for me, but the price seemed right. Maybe I'll just keep riding my friends bike and then pick up something in a couple months when the demand changes. How does the SV compair to the YZF or GSXR of same size?

I rode a blast in the MSF. It's got a touchy clutch. Touch brakes. Heavy vibration and sounds like a go-cart. I wouldn't recommend it. For the record...I like buells.
