Sad day at work

I had to help a friend clear out his desk and walk him out. It's different seeing co-workers being laid off. This one was a discreet termination for various reasons (he held a high position in the company but he didn't see eye to eye with a certain person above him). If you were part of the termination process and it was your friend being axed, would you warn him in advance? I was told 24 hours in advance but I already knew months ago (you can't hide information from your network admin, which is me). I never told him and I acted surprised in his presence. -a|ex

If he would make it obvious that he knew by stirring things up more or calling people out... or hell, even just saying he knows... then you cannot risk yourself... However... If you can trust the guy not to lose it, then I say tell him. Give the man some time to prepare for things like... Not buying that new boat... Looking for another job... and budgeting for the downtime... I got fired one time... It was total BS... Total Office Space crap... Work for a company for 5 years, get promoted 3 times, then some joker comes in to 'help facilitate organizational clarity and ensure the profitability so that venture capital funds can be aquired.' Recommendation to everyone... Document everything - verbal means nothing, note it in email, print out the reply, and send a copy to a friend(ex. actual vacation time approved - that's what got me) and if you find yourself in a position that the expectations are to make the impossible possible (ex. getting retail prices on products through internet auction sites that are oversaturated with that particular product anyway - the other part of the problem for me)... Find other ways to make yourself useful and/or start looking for another job...

I'd tell him. get him prepared. Maybe not that far out, but if it does put your job at risk, I wouldn't. Maybe hint to him or something.

I'm sure that would be tough. I wouldn't tell him...that could be your azz on the line if the PTB's find out your are snitching.

That's just one of those bad deals. The only way you could have warned him is if you knew he could keep it under his hat. You know... to give him advanced notice to look for another job.

Yea you can alway say something like, "hey man, you really need to update your resume cause you never know!!!!". Actually, if were we good friend or atleast good co-workers I would have said something as soon as I found out. Especially if he has a family :2cents:
