Screw that! The cost of dining out is going up and they still get the customary 15% so they do get raises. I know people who make over $40/hour on friday and sat nights. They are not worth that kind of money.
neebelung 11-07-2006, 01:40 PM I don't have any issue with how much money a server makes, IF they earn it. The whole concept of standardizing and automatically adding a tip as a service charge just makes me :cursin: because then what motivation is there for a server to do their job well? NONE. So essentially the cost of eating out will go up, service will go down, and then what?
I've never waited tables, because I KNOW I don't have the patience for it, and I'd be the bitchy waitress "accidentally" pouring a pot of coffee in your lap if you pissed me off... so I have much respect for people who can do it, and do it well.... it takes a certain personality type, and therefore I tip really well when I get good service... So in SOME cases, the industry would actually be screwing their servers out of potentially MORE money but doing this...

If I think the service is real good, I tip more than 20%. If its bad I tip less than 10%. Let me decide what to tip. Not the resteraunt.
Gas Man 11-07-2006, 01:49 PM My wife use to be a waitress so do feel for the job...
But if you make a required % doesn't that take away from the "push" to do good?

:iagree:
I would say no, not, nill to the set 20% service charge to every check thing...
It has a negative effect on 2 side.. one the piss poor server will say "you got to pay me anyway so why should I give you excellent service" and two it allows the Piss poor tipper an excuse not to exceed the minimum tip for expert & Excellent servers that go out of their way to make your evening an experience to remember....
I have seen both side of this and it's not worth it.... on either side....
mvp622 11-07-2006, 02:01 PM I feel sorry for the waitors and waitresses that do a really good job and get jipped by some cheapskate. On the otherhand if you set a standard 20% tip rate someone could conceivably be bad at their job and make as much as someone who was an outstanding server. Doesn't make much sense.
Captain Morgan 11-07-2006, 02:01 PM Ok, haven't read the other posts yet, but here's my opinion. Tips should be received based on performance. They should NOT be mandatory. In my eyes, every waiter or waitress starts off with a 20% tip and it is adjusted from there. More for exceptional service, less for substandard service. And I have left little to no tip (1 penny so they KNOW I didn't "forget" to tip) before if the person deserved it. That's just my personal way of tipping.
sdog30 11-07-2006, 02:01 PM I think it's :wbs: the way the whole thing is set up. Everybody knows that a waitress makes nothing for a wage and counts on tips, which forces you to tip them even if you feel like they sucked. Sh#t, even they're tips get taxed which is bullsh#t, THERE TIPS!! :cursin:
Pay the bitch minimum wage ($6.50 or whatever it is now) and if she does a good job, she get's a tip. I'm usually a good tipper, too, but it sucks to feel like you have to tip someone even if they suck and your visit wasn't good.:bash:
marko138 11-07-2006, 02:07 PM I think you guys are hitting this right on the head. It will abosolutely! be a 'way out' for shotty servers. They will get their loot in the end no matter how bad they are. And the good servers get shanked.
I will give out 'hansome' tips for great service. And less for bad service. I always leave something tho.
My wife and I eat at the bar of a local Applebee's. We've been going there for years. They know us and they take care of us pretty well. They gave us excellent service from the beginning so we've always tipped them very well. The extra tipping led to continued great service and they started to remember us. That led to even better service and great tipping. Now they throw some free stuff at us. Drinks, dessert, etc.

they should just do away with tips and pay everyone a flat rate. it's a silly concept. you should want to do your best, after all. raises should be the indication of a job well done, not tips.

I disagree, to a point. YES, you should do a good job, because you take pride in your work and it's your job to do so.
BUT, much like commission is motivation for people in sales to go ABOVE AND BEYOND the call of duty, so tips should motivate in the same manner.

I always find ten percent of the total (move the decimal over in your head one figure to the left) and then double it an dthen I usually just round up to the nearest dollar. If they did a good job, I round it a little more (like a couple dollars).
Ex.
Bill is $34.57
10% is 3.46
doubled is about $7 (20%, pretty standard)
Total is $42 (rounded up .43):idk: :dthumb:

I don't know about that one. It might motivate them to try and sell you that thing your thinking about buying, but I wouldn't say ABOVE AND BEYOND. Car dealers are some of the shadiest M'F:cursin:CKERS around IMO. Best Buy employees always bug the sh#t out of me, too. :bash:

I guess my experience of sales people is different (as in, different TYPE of sales -- wholesale end) since I just came out of that.
I agree, car sales people are different... but then "above and beyond" is different in that industry as well. Leave me alone, let me drive what I'm interested in, leave me alone some more, then give me straight numbers without B.S. (or as little as possible).

from a former servers POV, it would be nice if people actually had to pay something, b/c you always get ppl, like the church crowd with 20 ppl, that instead of a monetary tip they leave some smarta** pamphlet or something...
BUT on the flip side, every GOOD server knows that if you go ahead and add that gratuity as part of the check, you will get screwed out of a tip 9 out of 10 times...I ALMOST NEVER added gratuity to my checks (i did to those church crowds...) and I found that when I did my best for ppl I got paid for it most of the time....
anyone ever seen Waiting? I was that crazy b**ch that would run in the freezer and scream...then be the sweetest angel to my tables...tee hee...

I forget to metion that, and you reminded me...a lot of restaurants will add the 20% gratuity in with a bill if there is a large party (like 12 people or more) and I totally think that is justified. One waiter/ress having to deal with a big table should get a tip off the bat.:2cents:

wow, i would be mucho offended if anyone ever said that to me...but it was never said, maybe its a northern thing?? regardless, i never had a problem doing my best, even with crappy customers...sometimes the worst customers were the best tippers, it was a test!!
Knight 11-07-2006, 05:14 PM My problem with the tipping system in restaurants is that it makes customer turnover highly important not only to the restaurant but also to the servers. I absolutely hate it when I'm out with a group of friends and we just want to chat and have a good time over dinner and dessert and after a while the server starts coming about every 30 seconds to "see how we're doing" which is server BS for "get the hell out of your chairs so I can get new tippers in there". In France when you go out with a group of people to dinner it's just expected that you'll spend a few hours just chilling and thus they spread out the serving of the food too. No tips are expected or required and tipping just doesn't make sense over there.
All that said I tip between 15%-20% unless the service is bad.
Once I didn't leave a tip, but that's because the server overcharged us and then yelled at me and my wife, so I ended up complaining to his manager and not tipping the server
i_love_mota-bikez 11-07-2006, 05:24 PM consider yourselves lucky, we dont tip in oz
TATER 11-07-2006, 05:26 PM The way that I see it is that the resteraunt industry has it made... they pay cooks an ok wage... dishwashers get minimum wage... and the waitresses get 2-3 dollars an hour plus tips... why not hire a guy to pump gas and only pay him $3 an hour and tell him that if he wants to make more he has to rely on others kindness to survive... make the resteraunts pay waitresses and waiters $10 an hour and we can tip if we think that they went above and beyond we can give them 5%... what the heck we pay $8-$10 for a hamburger and fries... and $2 for a soda (although my baccardi and cokes cost more) their fountain sodas only cost them .08 to .12 so that is $1.88-$1.92 profit... so if i go out to eat and order just 2 sodas we just covered our waitresses hourly wage... so everything else we buy is net profit..
Customer service increases when you are held acountable for your behavior.... that is like saying that we should pay all professional football players the same.. why would I work out and try to excell if I am getting paid the same as the schlub next to me who is lazy and doesn't work hard...
my sister was a waitress so I know that she had to put up with customers BS to get a good tip... she was good and has a great personality (not fat) she actually has a great personality... so she made some bucks.. she would average $28 an hour and up... then again she did waitress at a country club..
now she is a liscenced clinical independant social worker and makes about the same... makes me wonder why she spent four years at Assumption College and two years of grad school at Boston University to go in debt 80 grand so she could make the same $$$ she was making...

It's cuz she knew that that in a few years not nearly as many guys are gonna want to hit that (and we all know its guys that pay most often)
15-20%, unless they give poor service. However it is sad that many servers pull in a few hundred dollars a night averaging to $40+/ hour.
At a bar, think about it. You buy a beer for say $4 and probably leave a $1 tip. 25%, kind of rediculous for someone doing 15 seconds of work to grab the beer out of fridge, or poor a draft and give to you.But seems typical to give them at least the $1

As it is probably known by most that my drink of choice is a baccardi and coke.. I always pay first and while waiting for my change I take a sip of the drink... if it is weak I tip less if it is good I drop a great first tip to get the bartender to remember me so when there are 40 people crashing the bar if he sees me there he jumps over to me and i get my sweet sweet nectar...

There is a huge difference here... If you are a cashier/bank teller/bagger, you are either doing your job or not... With hair stylists and waitresses there are variations in how well you are doing your job... Now if your grocery bagger guy/gal takes your bags to your car... 'above and beyond'... tip 'em... they deserve it...

If only I could rep you again tonight...
Psycho's tip scale
Excellent service = 20%+
Good/decent service = 15%
I got my food and you weren't a total azzhole = 10%
Acted like you had better things to do/didn't care to let me know that my food was going to be late/I had to ask another server for something/I never got a refill = loose change... and usually a note, "I am a good tipper, but your service sucked... try harder."
Absolutely abysmal service = no money and an even cooler note... "I got your tip... actually two of them... find another job, you suck at this one... and don't drink and drive."
That last one is usually accompanied by a talk with the management staff...
As far as feeling bad about what servers make... Watch the beginning of Reservior Dogs...

I have no problem giving 20%+ to people if they earn it. But I'm not going to give someone a mandatory 20% tip if I'm at a restaraunt and I ordered a simple meal and a simple drink. Especially if they suck. My tips are a training tool. If they get a lousy one, they need to improve their people skills and get rid of the attitude and refill my damn drink when it's empty.

Reps.
one thing to consider as well, in many professions, like banking (yes i did that too, at the same time i waited tables), it is either ILLEGAL, or AGAINST COMPANY RULES for employees to receive gratuity, gifts, etc... there is a certain limit set on even Christmas gifts, most places have a dollar amount...i.e. at one of the banks I worked at it was a $25 limit, at another it was $100 limit...it is the same for the business I am currently in, real estate...we have to be careful b/c receiving nice gifts could be considered as "buying us" and is illegal...we also cant give gifts or anything that could be considered a gift that costs more than $25...its alot to keep up with...
but on the flip side when I was in banking, sometimes you could get special permission to receive the gifts!!!
TATER 11-08-2006, 11:28 AM One of the last time that I went out to eat the service was lousy... the waitress was impatient and was more concerned with texting someone on her phone then checking her tables...
she came to our table as the hostess sat us said hello are you ready to order? we aksed for a couple of drinks and another minute to look over the menue... she looked annoyed that we didn't have the menue memorized before we sat down... we looked at the menues and knew what we wanted in about 2-3 minutes and I always make sure to close my menue and place it near the edge of the table so when she looks over she sees that we are not still looking at them and still thinking... It took her 10 minutes to come back... by that time my baccardi and coke was long since done and my dates drink was done too... We ordered and she said that she would put in our order... I then asked if we could have another round of drinks too. she said sure.. and we didn't see her again for fifteen minutes... the food came and she had not brought our drinks.. i pointed out that she hadn't brought the drinks that we ordered and she said "oh yea" and said that she put the order in but the bartender hadn't made them yet....she served our plates.. our order was wrong... my date had ordered a griled chicken ceaser salad and she was brought a ceaser salad with no grilled chicken.. when we mentioned this to her she said.."NO... that is what you ordered... and we proceded to inform her that it was not what she had ordered.. and that the salad had the dressing on it and that she had specificly asked for it on the side... so she said "FINE i'll go tell the chef that you CHANGED your mind and want a grilled chicken salad... She then made a face and left... and she disappeared for another ten minutes... so I proceded to share my fries that came with my meal with her until her meal came back... she then came back with the salad which was teh same one covered in dressing but had grilled chicken on top.. my date just took it and didn't want to make another issue out of it... we then asked about the drinks again and she just sighed loudly and turned an left towards the bar area..my date just ended up blotting off some of the dressing with a napkin.. about 10 minutes later she came with the drinks and ust walked up and put them on the end of the table and kept walking...
I planned on not tipping at all but I figured she would just think I was cheap... so I proceded to walk up to the other two waitresses that were working the area that we were in and asked stated that I noticed that they were very good at keeping up with their guests and that our waitress could learn a thing or two and gave each of them a ten and told them to keep up the good work...
you know the service had to be bad if it bothered me enough to type this whole thing up.... lol
neebelung 11-08-2006, 11:33 AM ... so she said "FINE i'll go tell the chef that you CHANGED your mind and want a grilled chicken salad...
It would be at this exact moment, I'd smile sweetly, and tell her to bring me the manager. There's NO reason for her to speak to a customer like that (and chances are, you're not the only one who's getting this sort of treatment, but if no one speaks up, chances are the manager has no knowledge of it).
wow, that would have prompted me to call the manager and loudly discuss how bad the service was and refuse to pay for anything!! ( i dont normally do things like that but thats ridiculous!!)
neebelung 11-08-2006, 11:40 AM wow, that would have prompted me to call the manager and loudly discuss how bad the service was and refuse to pay for anything!! ( i dont normally do things like that but thats ridiculous!!)
I don't even refuse to pay... normally when something like that happens, I just explain everything very calmly and matter-of-factly, and they offer to comp the ticket before I'm even done.
And if they don't comp the ticket (or just comp whatever item was bad/wrong), then I just don't go back there, as it's apparent the lack of customer service goes all the way to the top.
Captain Morgan 11-08-2006, 11:53 AM My guess is that waitress didn't even care that she didn't get a tip, let alone that you gave her tip to two other waitresses.

well yeah, you are right, i dont ever have to actually say that i refuse b/c they do take care of it on their own...but if I had to, i might say that!!
I'm not sure about most states…but in Texas... wait staff are paid 2.15 an hour... so Tips are a major part of the livelihood.... I generally tip 20%+, and I'm sure anyone that has been a server do about the same...We are most likely more critical of the server but we recognize when a server is trying their best...getting slammed or [Censored] off and tip accordingly. As far as orders fill, cashiers, door men, bag boys and others are not normally tipped by the common person... but then that depends on where you are, what they do for you, and how they do it... Sure you can tip them but for the most part it's not expected... and then only if the tipper really appreciates what is being done.
Ace:
At a bar, think about it. You buy a beer for say $4 and probably leave a $1 tip. 25%, kind of rediculous for someone doing 15 seconds of work to grab the beer out of fridge, or poor a draft and give to you.But seems typical to give them at least the $1
/agreed... there are ways to get better service... this also works on the Pizza Man too...it says something to get your pizza in less then 30 mins after they quote you 45 mins or an hour
i_love_mota-bikez 11-08-2006, 07:45 PM Really? How does that work?
in queensland, which is where i am your not expected to tip, its covered in their wages i think
sh3smith 11-08-2006, 08:06 PM in france and some outher countries they put the tip in cost of the food:cry: :cursin: :cursin: :cursin: :cursin: :cursin: :cursin: :cursin: :cursin: :cursin:
CaddyGuy 11-08-2006, 08:29 PM :2cents: My 2 cents are that I do agree tips should NOT be mandatory. However, most people fail to realize waiters have to tip out their fellow employees. I'm a waiter working through college living on my own, and on any given shift I can tip out between 30 - 60 dollars of my own tips to the busser, food runner, and bartender. Some people may not think us waiters are worth this "high" hourly wage, but we don't get paychecks and we don't even get to keep all our tips. The restaurants giants do have it made, I agree. They pay us sh** and we have to pay the rest of their employees for them. It sucks :cursin: . So whatever, I tip 15% min. when I eat out and over 25% of I got excellent service. Just remember, if your son or daugher was a waiter who messes something up, and tries to make it right...would you want some stranger stiffing your them? Lawyers set their hourly rates, private tutors have theirs, working people have an expected salary, and we are supposed to be paid 15%. If you don't like it, go eat at Jason's Deli...Oh yeah, one more thing, I think its complete BS that people think just because they don't like their meal, they don't have to pay for it. Any educated person would know there is "NO FREE LUNCH":flush: . Somebody has to pay for that, its not our fault you don't like it....seriously!

..., Histoire française....,
During one of the many wars that the French and the British fought and the French usually lost, the French just happened to capture a British Major. An officer brought the Major to the French general for interrogation. The French general began ridiculing the Major for wearing "that stupid red tunic." The French general said, "Why to you wear that red uniform, it makes it easy for us to shoot you." The British major replied, "If I do get wounded, the blood will not show, and my soldiers will not get scared." The French general said, "That is a very good idea," The Frenchy turned to his orderly and said, "From now on all French officers will wear brown pants." 5

But if you make a required % doesn't that take away from the "push" to do good?We have a few restaurants that still offer curb service. (order your food and served at your car) They use to work on commission + tips at one and the other was base pay + tips. Curb hops (servers) would fight to get to your car to take you order and usually offered great service by checking in and removing your window tray and disposing of the garbage. Both switched to just over minimum + tips. Now you have to blow your horn just to get waited on and nobody ever checks to see if everything is as ordered or just ok. Service out side basically sucks. I seldom tip them now.
:iagree: but I also bitch at a friend who still leave $1 as a tip no matter if the meal was $5 or $35.
we should either tip everyone or no one. i tip my stylist and i tip waitresses, but why shouldn't i tip the bank teller or the bagger at the grocery store? they all provide services.
i work for my mom on the weekend at her business at the local farmers market. she has a sub shop. i am on the front counter (take and fill orders/cashier). no one tips me. should i sit my cup out?I tip everyone I know that is on a pay rate that is adjusted from receiving tips. Bank tellers make normal wages and don't expect tips. Bag boys/girls rarely expect it any more and they make more than they use too. If they offer exceptional service. I do tip them even tho the store has signs posted that tipping is not necessary. I even tipped the guy at Best Buy for helping me load my TV. He is only required to get me out of the store and return cart.
BTW if you put the cup out and write Tips on the side. It will receive something. Even the girls at my local Sub Way do it.
