bumblebee 11-14-2006, 10:50 PM Tonight when I was out riding, I stopped by a Chevron station to get a drink...
As most of us do, I walked in with my gloves and helmet on.
I walked to the cooler and pulled a 69 cent can of diet coke out, and walked to the cashier with a dollar bill in my hand...
As I approached the counter, the woman behind the counter started yelling at me, " you have to get rid of all that stuff!" and she was pointing at my helmet.
I walked up and said I just wanted a soda...
She started screaming at me..."If you don't take that stuff off for the camera, I'm gonna call the police."
I told her I just wanted a soda and put the dollar on the counter for a 69 cent can of diet coke and walked out.
Before I could pull out of the parking lot...3 Tallahassee PD cars showed up...
She had called 911...
Of course, they treated me like a shoplifter, and got aggressive...I found myself in handcuffs...
less than 2 minutes later, the on duty sargent showed up...his wife works with my wife...he immediately told them to release me...
he went into the store and asked what was up...
The clerk had called 911 because I hadn't pulled my helmet off so their video camera could take my picture...:yikes:
The sargent let me go, while the clerk was yelling at him because she didn't have my picture...
I'm like WTF...???
Has anyone had anything like this happened to them???
byron12 11-14-2006, 10:56 PM :yikes: That is just wrong I can't believe someone would care about something as asinine as that. Maybe you should have just stuck a gun in her face and said
I'm paying for my drink and you better like it.:idk:
Captain Morgan 11-14-2006, 11:27 PM Apparently, common sense is not common. I could understand if you had done something wrong, but you didn't. What a joke.
TATER 11-14-2006, 11:40 PM I had entered a stand alone ATM in a parkinglot and when i went up to go in someone was in there and looking over their shoulder at me. I had my helmet still on wanting to stop quick to make it to meet my friends in time to gas up for a ride... the lady in the ATM hit the panic buton... she thought that i was going to rob her... she told the cops that she thought i was wearing a ski mask..
some convenience stores and banks in my area have signs stating that you need to remove helmets, hats, and sunglasses when entering...
my question is did she ask you as you were walking in... or as you were in line waiting to buy... or as you walked up to her at an empty counter..
1SickGixSix 11-15-2006, 12:51 AM i always wondered if that would happen to me or someone...i guess it happens
Gas Man 11-15-2006, 02:26 AM i always wondered if that would happen to me or someone...i guess it happens
:withstupi
But I would be damn sure not spend anymore of my $$ at that place bee!
What did the cops tell the b**ch?
King Bob 11-15-2006, 05:28 AM arent you glad the sargent on duty was a friend? sucks to hear that the clerk freaked out over a simple thing like that. probably thought you were going to rob her or something like that.

Dude, are you serious? Which Chevron? I know not to go to that one. r maybe I should to mess with that lady.
:cursin:
I get told to take my helmet off all the time in certain stores. I just don't go there any more. Crazy story though.
"Sir!! Put down the Diet Coke and put your hands on your head!"
"He's resisting! Cuff 'em!!"
itgirl25 11-15-2006, 06:34 AM i've never even come close to experiencing anything like this. it's time consuming to remove the helmet and gloves just to pay for gas. i wanna get it and and go! what if you were to pay for your gas at the pump via credit? would you still hafta remove the helmet for that?
1BadCBR 11-15-2006, 06:34 AM That is some crazy shi@t....maybe the gas station has been robbed before and she was just a little nervous :idk: If not then she was just being a azzhole!

I dont bother to go in places. I've heard of this kind of stuff happening. So I pay at the pump.
neebelung 11-15-2006, 06:57 AM Sorry to be the voice of dissent here, but it's common sense to remove your helmet when entering a conveinence store. They're very common targets for robbery, so it's perfectly reasonable they attampt to capture every patron's image on camera. Did they (the police) go overboard? Yes. But it all could have been easily avoided if you'd just taken off your helmet.
I have ONE gas station I always use right by the house, for the simple fact that they know me (and Chris) by now, and I CAN go in there, grab a red bull, etc... without taking off my helmet.
itgirl25 11-15-2006, 07:01 AM :iagree: with the logic behind removing your helmet, but if you were gonna rob the place would you really stop to fill your tank up first?
if i am getting a drink, i'll remove it because i obviously need to anyways to drink it. but just to pay for gas i usually don't. i would if they requested it though.
neebelung 11-15-2006, 07:02 AM :iagree: with the logic behind removing your helmet, but if you were gonna rob the place would you really stop to fill your tank up first?
I wouldn't think so, but then again, I've never robbed anyone, so I can't say for sure!
ShanMan14 11-15-2006, 07:17 AM As former law enforcement I can understand how leaving your gear on might appear suspicious or even frightening to some. For all we know that clerk could have been robbed before and the helmet/glove combo sent her over the edge.
I'm not going so far as to say she was way out of line; there are other circumstances none of us know.
However, her calling 911 after paying and walking out does seem alarmist, assuming that's how it happened.
And regardless of your personal relationships, no crime was committed so they had no reason to hold you once determining that.
ne1469 11-15-2006, 07:26 AM I dont bother to go in places. I've heard of this kind of stuff happening. So I pay at the pump.

They sell soda at the pump? :skep:
smileyman 11-15-2006, 08:26 AM I go into stores with my gear on all the time. Here in Arkansas they are just proud to see your not shirtless or barefoot!!!
I pay at the pump all the time, but if their station doesn't have the pumps to do it, I go in however I am dressed, flip up the lid and pay out. I suppose no one here argues with that 'cause it would be a 25 minute wait for the cops to arrive:lol:
riding triumph 11-15-2006, 09:09 AM :readng: Says it right here...... wear a backpack and nothing else. Not even shoes.

I would sue. I think this could be seen as harrassment... Unless of course they had signs posted requiring you to remove head coverings before entering the building... I think it's worth $10k.
Dude, are you serious? Which Chevron? I know not to go to that one. r maybe I should to mess with that lady.
:cursin:
 Get like 20+ bikers together to go in there with full gear on... buy a drink and leave... Somebody in the back of the line loudly proclaims, "I want your money." Then another person slowly reaches into their pocket... pulls out a $1 and gives it... That clerk's head would explode...

I've seen it...
I always remove at least my helmet as common courtesy, i used to be a banker and there is nothing more nervewracking than having someone come into your place of business with something concealing their face...so this lil bit of paranoia slipped into my everyday life, so if I ever question whether or not i shoudl take off my helmet, i always do...
but this was a lil silly, especially after you told her several times, then walked out...maybe she thought she was teachign you a lesson...?
The lady wasn't wrong. She asked you to remove your helmet. She had the right to refuse you service and exercised that right. Even though you laid a dollar down, you were refused service and still never technically bought the can of soda and that would be considered shoplifting. At least you had a way out though.

i frequent a gas station in the city a few times a week and they recognize me wheni come in but there is this one lady that like has it out for me once i left my truck parked at the gas station, and went riding with a freind , i figured that the guys in side new my vehicle and it was a well lit area no one would bother it , it was out of the way from cust so i figured it was ok !...... not ......when i came back there was a nasty note written just for me stuck under my winshield from little miss ( havent had the operation to have the stick removed form my a** yet , cause im to busy writing nasty notes ) it stated that the gas station that i had parked at was not a park and ride and i should find my blonde a## a new parking spot . it really pissed me off because i spend about 100 a week in this place between gas and beer , so i stoped going needless to say they dont need my money ! im pretty sure it was just this girl haveing some tiff with me but im not sure why ?

:idk: Ah, while the tone of the note was tacky/inappropriate, really you should be glad they didn't have your truck towed, as it would have been within their right to do so. A gas station isn't a public parking lot.

i agree but i was only gone for about 20 mins and when i came back i was planning on buying beer and leave'n and the guys inside normally wave at me when i leave it there, i have asked before and they said it was fine as long as they see me leave so they know im coming back , so :idk:

I can see where you'd think it would have been fine... but knowing you were only gonna be gone a little while, still would have been polite to just let them know, rather than assume.
(still, she didn't need to be a b*tch about it!! )

jeeps84 11-18-2006, 04:10 PM I've never had a problem in connivance stores but have gotten some strange looks at the ATM. I just stepped back and let them continue. It seemed to ease the tension.
