Hey guys,
I just got off the phone with Marsha at Tapoco Lodge. She is wanting to know how many rooms we need that week and weekend. (June 1st-10th, if you can only come one weekend make it the 9-10th weekend) Someone is trying to snake this week and weekend from us.
I need immediate sure answers to tell her. I will post the Tapoco Lodge info below this post.
Here is the site.

drewpy 12-07-2006, 08:15 PM u got my vote
drewpy 12-07-2006, 08:16 PM how many ppl we need?
how many ppl we need?
?
I don't know, it just depends on how many people want to stay at tapoco. That was the choice that was decided on.
If no one wants to reserve a room there, then don't vote. I live here so I don't really have to get people to stay in one place. I was for staying wherever you want, but some people wanted to drink together and not have to worry about riding.
jeeps84 12-07-2006, 09:16 PM You know Ill be there.
marko138 12-07-2006, 10:25 PM I'm still hoping to get down the last couple of days.
drewpy 12-08-2006, 08:42 AM i thought that the topacco(sp) lodge might of had a minimum number of ppl that needed to confirm a nights stay to hold the rooms open for us
i thought that the topacco(sp) lodge might of had a minimum number of ppl that needed to confirm a nights stay to hold the rooms open for us
I had them reserve some rooms for us, but nobody is reserving so they are wanting to give our space to someone else that will take up that whole week and weekend because no one is showing any interest from our group.
bumblebee 12-08-2006, 09:42 AM Put me down for a cab/lodge room for two...we have planned to be there Wed. thru Sat...
I can make my own breakfast...
drewpy 12-08-2006, 08:36 PM my attendance is 95% sure- it only depends on if psycho gets a job since she graduates college in may... but i think my dad and gramps and uncle want to make a return trip with me for this...
drewpy 12-08-2006, 09:20 PM bump
I am glad you posted this Trip, i was going to do the same!!!
I talked to Marsha this morning, she is super cool and did confirm that NO ONE has booked rooms for this yet and that other group wants this weekend, so ya'll get on the ball and TAKE CARE OF IT!!! There were lots of us that said we'd go, now we just gotta book the room!
If you need more info or want to book your rooms, shoot her an email, the info email link on the website will go right to her, you can also call and leave a message and she will call you back. the rates arent set in stone b/c they may change a lil after they open for the year tho but she said she'd let us know. Either way, this is a prime location for us all to get together and hang out without having to drive for those that want to do some hard core drinking.
I am going to book my rooms this weekend to make sure i get the one i want, so ya'll do the same so we can all hang out!!! :dthumb:
I plan on reserving my room when i call her back to let her know the room number. Good luck trying to get a room around here when it gets closer to those who don't want to reserve a room.
Gas Man 12-09-2006, 10:18 PM I can't do **** till I am able to get the vacation time booked... otherwise its all a waste... besides all else fails... I'll just crash at Jeeps or make him bring the rig down! :D

neebelung 12-11-2006, 08:47 AM Only about a 30% chance I'd be there. Would love to, but dependent on too many other factors (not the least of which is if I have a new bike by then) to be able to commit. :idk:
Room is booked!!! my and hubby and nyrican and wife are gonna be there...Thursday thru Sunday!!! :woo: getting a trailer for all 4 bikes and riding up together!! Road trip!!
Just got off the phone with Marsha, got a nice room, etc, if ya'll havent at least checked out the rooms go do so, you can see them by going to accomodations and it will bring up pics of the different rooms and cabins...vurry nice...

see my earlier post, but no pressure, we wont be there till afternoon at least...
Deadline has been extended to 5pm because I won't get to talk to Marsha til after work.
drewpy 12-13-2006, 11:58 AM im showin up fri, but i hope to make an eariler apperance if possible, and psycho is coming along, with the rebel, should be a good time, anyone talk to pippie and twisty about coming along?
My girl may or may not come. She is nervous about driving over the dragon to get there and in her words "will never ride a motorcycle driven by anyone even herself on the dragon." I think our situation will be changed by then though and she will come but in a car driven by her. I took her through it once in my civic and she hated it. She liked the skyway a lot more as long as I went slow.
Well, I told Marsha to set aside 4 to 5 lodge rooms and 3 to 4 economy rooms. First come first serve.
use the phone number on the front page or you can email her at info@tapocolodge.com
I have reserved the 7th-10th there. Not for sure if I will stay the 7th, but I will be there 8th-10th definitely.

Ask! I bet they have a grill there.

I thought of doing that, but it is a pain waiting for a call back or email. I will check when they open back up or whoever is the next to call in their reservation should ask.

R1up0n1 12-28-2006, 11:37 AM I'll have to wait and see what the plans are with BALL_SAK. We were discussing the TWF Rally while I was in KY for xmas. This trip and the other rally I go to every year are so close together.
I may make both trips, but they are about a month apart from each other I think. I have the time to take off work for both..... I'll have to do some more investigation and planning.

They changed the weekend they do the FZ1 rally? We purposely made it the same weekend as the one you came to last time because it was a good weekend as far as traffic. That kind of stinks.

no, I fully expected the SV and FZ1 rallys to be there. They were there last year. There are rallys there every weekend. This is one of the less crowded weekends with no big car rallys. Car rallys are the worst.
Oh, BTW we may want to attend the FZ1 rally's dinner on saturday. For like 15 bucks you get a chance to win some really nice prizes. I am talking full leathers as a prize.
okay, thats better, I was getting a lil nervous if there were going to be tons of people there...
that sounds like some fun, I can always use more gear...they would let us go to their dinner?

Yeah R1 doesn't own a FZ1 and he went last year. I went to the SV rally and there were several people who didn't own SVs there. I honestly liked the FZ1 rally better, they had a barbeque outside and were really friendly. The SV rally was extremely cliquish and had a snooty sit down dinner in the lodge.
R1up0n1 12-28-2006, 03:09 PM Yes, I will definatly be there. Ball_Sak and I are probably going to stay with the FZ1 guys again as we do every year.
Trip is correct... there are Rally's every week(end) during this time of year. Last year with the FZ1 board, and SV Rally it actually wasn't too crowded. Towards the end of the week we started seeing people arrive for the R1 board....so it's impossible to get a weekend by our selves.
Trust me....you want other bike boards down there at the same time as us. We went one year and the Miata board was down there the same week. Major disaster!
jeez, all these miata haters...:nonod:
do you think I could trailer my bike AND my miata, would that offend anyone??

You don't want any part of your miata here. Miatas are hated by everyone but miata drivers. They are famous for bad driving and almost killing people.

Those miata people fix up their 10k car with all this stuff...it still handled like sh*t and they try to take corners on the draggon like we do on our bikes. A lot of them slide straight thru a turn and into a tree, or go down the side of a mountain. Meanwhile they are dripping oil all over the road for us bikes to slip thru a turn.
It's not just miata's I'm harping on.... other car clubs do the same.

car rally weekends are just terrible. There are a few that don't cause too much trouble. I went during a mini cooper weekend and they were pretty nice and since they handled so good and don't have the much umph to try passing, they stayed in their own lane most of the time.

That was the opposite with the Miata's. Every time I came around a turn, their was a miata sliding around the turn with their e-brake in my lane.:bash:

I stay away that weekend, i have heard enough horror stories about those tools.
well, you cant account for other peoples stupidity, or skill at driving...(and please keep in mind, many miata drivers are really OLD people!)
i love my little car and she handles like a lil sporty rear wheel drive should, maybe not a cadillac to some, but consider, your butt is practically bumping along on the ground and there isnt room for a whole lot of fancy stuff, just machine...but if you dont know how to drive it like you stole it...dont bother...
using the ebrake on a public traveled road...:bash: besides, if you have a good feel for your car there should be no need or loss of control of either end!!
as for leaks...not in my household buddy...:tt:
but i am just teasing anyways...

Tell her she has to come. I am sure we can get some riders to run a speed limit pace on the longer trips. Riding the dragon on the other hand should be done at your own pace and not try to make it a follow the leader sort of ride. The normal trip will be about 9 miles on the dragon without going down the mountain from the overlook. Ride it, wait for everyone at the overlook, ride back, so it won't be like your riding by yourself all day. Plus when we are not riding, she is going to miss out on all the uncensored fun.
tell she has to be there OR ELSE!!! :tt:
honestly, I am sure there will be plenty of people who arent flying around and she shouldnt have any trouble finding a slower buddy to ride with, no one will push her or expect her to keep up if she isnt as fast!!!
It will be mine and my 3 other friends first time there so I am sure at first we will be the slowest ones out there!! We arent trying to set any land speed records anyways, just going to have fun!!! Us ladies need all the other chicas there we can get!!
saverok 01-11-2007, 04:13 PM you stink!! j/k
cant you negotiate or something??
I spoke to the wife she said she would be willing to change it to the first week. it is when our anny is.
I'm waiting on a call back from the lady that owns the cabin. :tt:

your awesome!! and so is she...does she ride yet?? you should get her a bike for your anny...(early of course so she can ride with us!!)
she will typically call back within a day or two, shes alot faster if you email!!
sounds like we will have a decent group size, sweet. Should be a fun weekend.

ur girlie coming out trip>?
She is coming for at least one night. She is scared she will be left out of all the fun because she won't ride with me or anyone else anywhere near the gap and will get left at the hotel while I am out riding. She is terrified of motorcycles and will only ride close to home on straight roads. I am not comfortable with riding her with me on those roads anyway. Double up should be better for us this season because of the suspension upgrades I have made, but I doubt it will be good enough for her to ride with me at the gap. I told her there might be some girls that don't want to ride one of the days and she could take off to pigeon forge with them, but she is still iffy.

she hasn't called me back yet...still waiting.
i didn't pay attention to were you guys were staying intill it was too late.
She "wants to ride" she know how and had a 250 for a year but sold it a couple of years ago and hasn't got a new one yet.
She doesn't know it but I'm buying her a gsx 500 at the beginning of april.
she saw it and loved it (but doesn't know she is getting it) and already has plans to sand it down and paint it and airbrush it. She is a graphic designer and does alot of custom paint jobs on the side.
Good vid of the dragon to get you guys even more excited, I am just mean teasing you with this stuff.

thats pretty much the group ride rules around here, we did the same thing when we rode across the dragon/skyway in the rain. That was not a fun day, that was my "baptism of fire" for rain riding.
drewpy 01-11-2007, 07:38 PM i thought you guys were behind me and jeeps on the skyway??

Probably something along the lines of don't wreck and he will wait for you when he reaches the end of his ride or wants a break.

 well, thats basically how we operate, except those of us with experience who are "mother henning" the newbies...I usually fly that duty...everyone else can ride ahead and I stay to the rear to make sure we dont literally lose anyone...
but i do have the moments when my patience ends and I have to do something crazy...:idk:

What's most scary about the gap is if you ride off by yourself and go down, you could quite literally disappear without a trace. Some of the cliffs are pretty steep and if you go off and don't leave a nice good trail of parts, it's going to be hard to find you. Scared yet? That's why I am always a little nervous when I make my way up there by myself.
drewpy 01-12-2007, 09:30 AM i dont think i could run that road by myself, the coming back at 2 am in the fog was bad enough :yikes: couldnt see 20 feet in front of you :bonk:

youre doing that on purpose arent you??!! :skep: didnt we talk about this yesterday??
I have run that road by myself in the night. I think that was the most scared I have ever been in my 27 years of life. Definitely an adrenaline rush. I don't think I would ever do that again by myself. Would go again at night with others.
Yeah, I am just being mean Rae. You will enjoy it, once you actually get on it and start hitting the twisties, the danger fades away and you enjoy the ride. If the danger doesn't fade, slow down and take it easy.
drewpy 01-12-2007, 09:43 AM :iagree: there is a rythem to that road, and once you get used to it, :yikes: best feeling on public roads

Ball_SaK 01-12-2007, 02:50 PM I will be down for the FZ1 rally as I have done for the past 5 years. We are part of them but I will make it a point to hang out with TWF ppl off and on.
I don’t know about R1- he will either be with my group or with you guys. R1 and I will be bringing (600rr- chad), possibly another dude named spooge, my g/f on the back on my bike, and r1 might be bringing his ball and chain on the back as well.
So it looks like 4 riders in our little group. I am staying at the Fontana camp ground.
I wanted to mention.... You normally have to be invited to join in the Fz1 rally activities. If anyone plans on going to their dinners or events at the cookout fri and sat nights you will need to view the FZ1 message boards and sign up, pay your fees, and complete the process just like all FZ1 riders who come will. You can’t just show up since they plan the rally based on how many members have pre registered. If anyone needs more info I can help.
If anyone wants to run with a faster pace group while were down there then feel free to join in with R1 and I. Both of us know most of the roads by heart now. We have been taking 3 trips a year for the past 4 years because we freaking love it! Even riding 2 up we will be riding at a good clip (at least I will be)

Good call Ball_Sak, I forgot to mention that you have to pay well before you show up to their rally events. I was unsure if they wanted to go to those though. We will most likely have to take another vote to see if they want to go try to win prizes or if they want to do their own thing. Personally, I am probably going to sign up with you guys and try to go get me some sort of cool prize.
From what I know, R1 is staying at the campground with you.
If anyone is curious, the FZ1 site is:
http://www.yamahafz1oa.com
That is where you will have to go to pay fees to get invited to their activities.
fpzx10 01-12-2007, 03:30 PM Last time I checked, the ZX-10R.net guys are having their rally June 6-10, also.

Good luck to them for finding a place to stay. SV and FZ1 takes up a lot of fontana village and us/some family reunion has tapoco. Not much room at the gap hotel.
saverok 01-12-2007, 07:31 PM all right the lady with the cabin I reserved told me she would hold that spot for me for the first week of june. But wouldn't give it to me intill she had someone to rent the week I have already paid for.
So I'm in the holding pattern right now about moving it to the first week. right now it is the week of 18th thru the 24th.

L48Shark 01-13-2007, 12:12 AM I am tentatively planning on being there. I say tentative because I haven't made any arrangements yet and I'm also planning to be in Lost Wages that month for the big 10 year wedding anniversary. :idk:
TATER 01-13-2007, 12:40 AM I'm tryin to get some guys from MA together... we will fend for ourselves for lodging... worst case scenario I'll crash in the trailer... I may have to ride to the gap form ma if I don't find a friend with a truck... I can get a trailer but I may need to borrow my buddies truck...
changing jobs soon so I may have trouble getting the time off...
tell'em up front you are going to be out of town, thats always worked for me!

This is why when in a group... you always must have a rear safety sweeper. And that person can not ride hard. Cause he's suppose to be the safety guy watching everybody else. When I rode with WOS here a few months back... I did this...
I'm just not sure about me going. I can't make any decisions about anything till I do my taxes and see how the money thing is going to un-fold for the year.
drewpy 01-13-2007, 12:20 PM do it, do it....

Yes, I will be at the campsite with Ball_Sak and with the FZ1 guys because I've been riding with these guys for years at the GAP.
I will be attending the TWF Rally as well. I will have a very busy schedule while I am down there.
I'm looking at leaving PA Wednesday June 6th, and leaving the GAP on Sunday June 10th.
Wed & Sun are basically travel days for me since it takes 10.5 hours to get there.... It's all I-81 s the whole way for me.
are you riding the whole way? or trailering??
its about 9.5 hours for us, we are trailering and stopping overnight to see my 'rents in ATL... call us lazy... i wanna be able to feel my butt when I get there!

I'll be bringing the bike down in the bed of the truck. My soft compound tires on the R1 aren't made for that long distance interstate riding.
I rode from Lexington, KY to the gap one year... It was only a 4 or 5 hour trip....but I was so worn out when I got there I didn't even want to ride the rest of the day.

jeeps84 01-16-2007, 12:21 PM What are Jeep's group ride rules?
My group ride rules:
Know exactly how many riders you start with.
Have a leader that knows where they are going.
Know and or explain exactly where the next meet or stopping point is. (usually short distances due the terrain)
After everybody arrives at predetermined point. We will continue to next point.
Everybody rides at their own pace. If you know your fast, jump into the lead group. (ie..Drwepy, R1) If you think your fast but unsure of roads and compared abilities, get in the middle. If you know your slow, get to the back pleas.
Everybody respect the other riders even if they aren't in our group. No crazy passing or racing to a corner. Make your intensions known. ie..Beep to let slower riders know you want by.
Try to do the same for the cagers and don't make any stupid passes on them either.
I will not make any major turns as a leader without waiting for the last rider. If ridding with me and you see a turn but not the rider in front of you. Continue on the same road. DO NOT TURN! In more technical turning areas. (ie..town where I make several rights and lefts in short distances) I will ride slow enough for even the slow riders to keep with the group.
I don't get radical in town or big highways with speeds and or stunts. Not saying I don't play tho.
If you fell the need to stunt. (ie..wheelies, stopies or anything else) Keep it clean and away from other riders. Especially the new and or slow riders. I don't want to get hurt because of your stupidity. I don't want to hurt anybody else.
Finally, as Gas Man mentioned. A sweeper to bring up the rear. Somebody that is a competent rider and can stop to help a distressed rider. He she should be able to navigate by themselves to the meet point also.
As the groups separate themselves by speed and ability. It my be necessary to establish leader and sweeper for each group. This will be needed as the trips might split into different groups going into different directions. Mostly depends on actual size of group for the day.
I will be riding my bike there, I will be so sore when I get there. That whole 30 minutes is just painful to think about.

I also imply them in small groups if I don't know you and your ability. Even when its just a few riders. Ill let you know up front that I tend to ride a spirited pace. Don't try to keep up and if I get out of sight. Ill see you at the next cross roads. Most times, Ill just play a lill and slow down so everybody can stay together. Depends mostly on the road.
Cash flow.
Get you butt down here. If you cant make this trip. Ill still be happy to show the way when you do make it.

Ill let you know up front that I tend to ride a spirited pace. Don't try to keep up and if I get out of sight. Ill see you at the next cross roads. Most times, Ill just play a lill and slow down so everybody can stay together. Depends mostly on the road.
Get you butt down here. If you cant make this trip. Ill still be happy to show the way when you do make it.
I'm trying man. I'm probly gonna be on a new schedule by then...so I'll have to take 3 days off...or come during the week when I am off...which actually might be better now that I think about it.
We'll see.

drewpy 02-20-2007, 11:09 PM :idk: it was kinda big deal there for awhile
ebbs15 02-20-2007, 11:11 PM so where is everyone meeting up? If I can swing it I'll be there... but it's a SLIM chance

justpucky 02-21-2007, 06:29 PM Screw the rally (and vacation time) I'm just gonna move to the neighborhood.
drewpy 02-21-2007, 07:31 PM :iagree: im rooting for both... there goes the neighborhood
jeeps84 02-23-2007, 07:41 AM Supposed to be in the 60's here today. :D
I am dying for it to warm up, and for the year to move a lil faster...got...to...make...it...till...the...trip...*sighs*
drewpy 02-23-2007, 09:13 AM this trip just keeps getting bigger over here... 11 people in my group that is coming down
jeeps84 02-27-2007, 09:15 AM I'm trying to round my crew up but nobody will commit right now. They all say catch them on that week and see what's up. Its different when you live so close. Who knows how many will actually show.

I really REALLY want to... but pretty much the planet's would have to align. I have a crosstraining package in to a school that's in Georgia. maybe I'll be lucky enough to have it start a little after this ride... so I can ride down, attend this... then ride down to school for 6 months...
seems HIGHLY unlikely... but it'd be F'n Sweet! though I think I'd be SERIOUSLY sore ... I just looked it up... Anchorage to Atlanta is 2,377 miles that's straight... like if you flew... probably closer to 3000
rent a uhaul trailer and trailer the bike, that way when you get to your school, you have both bike and vehicle and you can make it to the rally!
Uhaul carries MC trailers that you can rent pretty cheaply...i looked into doing that before I got mine.

I really wanna RIDE down... I'll never come back to AK... unless the AF orders me back... but if the plan did work out... i'd ride to the rally no matter what... i'd have to be hospitalized to miss it:dthumb:
ebbs15 02-27-2007, 08:58 PM :yikes: look at what mapquest says! (http://www.mapquest.com/directions/main.adp?go=1&do=nw&rmm=1&un=m&cl=EN&qq=hltF3hzNT9tNhURP0HLlhh9UYBmHRqyBceg4Gkon14D8uewLk7pjHQ%253d%253d&ct=NA&rsres=1&1y=US&1ffi=&1l=&1g=&1pl=&1v=&1n=&1pn=&1a=1601+medfra+st&1c=anchorage&1s=ak&1z=99501&2y=US&2ffi=&2l=&2g=&2pl=&2v=&2n=&2pn=&2a=+14981+Tapoco+Road&2c=+Robbinsville&2s=NC&2z=28771&r=f)
damn I'd have to change my oil when I got there... and again when I got back... and that's running it 1200 OVER!
drewpy 02-27-2007, 09:14 PM do it... do it....
ebbs15 02-27-2007, 09:31 PM do it... do it....
I'm SERIOUSLY thinking about just take'n leave regardless of my crosstraining... I have 49+ days of leave saved... the only catch is they limit us to 14 durring the summer... so maybe I can talk them into 20... damn that'd be a hell of a ride
That would be freaking awesome dude, the only problem is, by the time you made it over here, you might be sick of riding!!!
drewpy 02-27-2007, 09:41 PM impossible, those roads beg to be ridden...
drewpy 02-27-2007, 09:41 PM ...but that is one hellva long ass ride
i was thinking maybe his rear couldnt take it, not that he wouldnt want to ride, but thats ALOT of body stress!!
Then again, since he only gets 1/2 the riding time the rest of us do, maybe it wouldnt be so bad...:idk:
ebbs15 02-27-2007, 09:48 PM That would be freaking awesome dude, the only problem is, by the time you made it over here, you might be sick of riding!!!
well if I could do 20 days... I could ride down... ride arround for 6 or 7 days... then ride back... but DAMN... that's ALOT of miles in 20 days.... and I'd probably try to stop by my friends in CO to get him to come down... that actually puts the round trip up to 5264! I'd need to do three damn oil changes... cause no doubt I'd rack up a couple K in the 6 or 7 days I ride down! not to mention I'd be need'n new rubber when i got back up!
this is gonna take some SERIOUS thought... especially I know I couldn't keep up with ya'll (and wouldn't try)
but damn the experience!
well, it would be something to brag about, i'll give you that...
buy extra tires and ship them to jeeps or trip, they can keep'em for ya till you get here!!
i dont think you will have to worry about keeping up, i think we are all at so many different levels, no one will have to worry about that!!!
For example, my hubby and I will have about 1.5 years of riding, not much, but we have done all kinds of stuff so far, working on our first track day as I am writing this actually, and my gf that is coming will only have about 6 mos, her hubby is right there with me, I know Drewpys chica is fairly new as well, then you have guys like Jeeps who is a friggin pro, etc etc...all different...no need to worry about that kinda stuff!!:dthumb:
drewpy 02-27-2007, 09:53 PM with that much riding, i would think ya would learn alot and prolly school some of us

yeah as soon as I decide yes or no.. I'll be make'n weekend trips up to Fairbanks and back (lots of Daylight!) to get used to the long haul... (fairbanks is about 400 miles north)

naw I'm not really worried about it... honestly... riding the Gap would be way down on the list as to why I'd want to do it... the experience and meeting you guys and riding with ya'll would be far above it.
thats it, i quit, i am gonna go wash my hair!!! I must be too tired to post tonight!!!

i wont leave, i actually just had to color my hair, since I dont have much it doesnt take long!!
 I actually thought about doing it in a two phase process... maybe ride down and on the way back stop in portland... where I have family... fly up to anchorage till I can get more leave... then fly down and ride it back up... My sister is a Flight Attendant for Alaska Airlines so I fly for free... but that also means I'd be with out my bike for a couple weeks... though I might need a break after a trip like that! so who knows... lots to think about...
