Thanks for all the info but I just read that every iPod comes with a CD w/ iTunes on it...mine didnt...so I tried to download it off of apple.com but Win32 doesnt recognize it or something...so Im confused. I tried putting music on my computer on it and it worked but I cant find it on my iPod once I unplug it from the comp. My wife just said that you have to have itunes installed on your computer for the music to stay on your iPod once it's disconnected from your computer. iPod is not user friendly It's not that it's not user friendly, it's that iTunes changes the songs to an MP4 format, thereby rendering them useless for anything BUT your iPod. (whereas if you get any other MP3 player, you don't have to change the filetype to upload them, and you can upload them more than once, not to mention you can usually use drag-n-drop to move the song files to your player -- when it's connected via the USB cable, it recognizes it as just another disk drive).

Alright here is a step by step guide on how I have gone about doing this. First I plug my ipod into my comp and then click start, my comp, IPOD (F), then the Music folder. After that I find the song I want and drag and drop it into the Music folder. Then I unplug my ipod from my comp (using the eject button to safely remove it) and click (on my ipod) Music, then Songs and there is nothing there.I even check the rest in the Music section and theres nothing. So my friend comes over with his CD and I download it thinking that I will finally get some music. I download it, plug in my ipod, then an error message pops up saying that I need to download itunes 7.0 to be able to download music. So I try itunes 7.0 again, double click it and the same error message (not a valid Win32 app.) pops up. My bros friend got one and his dad set it up and he said that he just dragged and dropped them from Windows Media Player which doesnt work either and Im beginning to think there is a problem with the ipod so...to save u guys and me a whole lot of trouble trying to figure it out, Im going to take it back to Walmart and exchange it for another one and see if it works. Im beginning to think these things are more trouble than theyre worth :bash: :willy: If u guys have any more tips tho post em up.

Dude, you can't drag and drop music into an ipod like you can other mp3 players. Apple and their ever loving ways of being royal pains in the a** made it so you have to encode them onto the ipod. This way you cant just plug it in and drag all your songs into anyone's computer you want. No, you have to use itunes or some other ipod encoding program to upload your songs into your ipod using their encoding software supposedly to make piracy harder, but it is just so that ipod can start a monopoly by making sure you use their prog. You need to find another computer and install itunes on it before you give up on the current ipod. It may just be your computer has problems.

So I go to yamipod.com and to my surprise its not working :cursin: I then go to the ipod message boards and find this posted at the top: I have been on the phone with Apple ipod for 2 hours. The problem is not Apple it is Windows and they can not fix it. So either your stuck with this piece of crap or you can return it and get a MP3 player, because Cory the "higher up guy" in Apple says not his problem. So apparently I am screwed. They say that it wont work unless u have a Mac so :idk: :bash: Thanks for all the help guys.

my daughters have ipod nano's for christmas. It took me 4 hours to figure out how to download music into it. first, download itunes (actually, i downloaded quicktime with itunes and deselected that annoying googlebar option during install). after you install itunes, plug in your ipod and it will automatically open up itunes. there is a selection on the main screen which you must check manual mode. if you don't, then it will lock out the drag and drop function. i am not at home, but will post screen shots later tonight. don't use yamipod, i tried that previously and it corrupted the nano. i had to reinstall the nano. yamipod works on the earlier ipods, not the new. nano only supports mp3 for audio. and it didn't come with a CD. -a|ex

Didn't want to read all the threads. Here's some info for ya, in case it hasn't been mentioned. Your "free" music just needs to be transfered (dragged) from your "free" spot over to your itunes program. Itunes is awesome IMO. I haven't had an Ipod for a while and I still use it. You can create new playlists. For example, I have one called "burn playlist". I just drag the tracks I want into that list and hit burn. Simple as that. And if your "free" music doesn't have all the info, i.e. artist, album or whatever, you just click twice in the column you want to enter the info in. Take a second between clicks or it'll start playing that song.

It will also convert CDs to this format directly onto your ipod without need of converting the cd to mp3. I also use a 2nd gen ipod nano on yamipod with no problem. Upshift, just return the ipod and get you a drag and drop mp3 player. You are just having too many problems that can be solved very easily with a simple drag and drop mp3 player. The creative zen is a good place to start looking.
