jetskifast 01-30-2007, 04:24 AM Last week took our much loved Persian cat Silvy to Vet. Described symptoms to the T, for vet. Vet tells me you need to leave cat over night for tests, will cost $1100 to $1500.
Tell vet thats little much if I have to put cat down any how. Vet tells me we can take few tests today blood, ultra sound for $400.
Turns out Silvy had genetic kidney defect which any Vet should have known from her breed. Plus you could feel her kidney 5 times normal size.
Shocks me that vet could feel her kidney then say give me $1100-$1500 for tests:mad:
After internet searchs, Vet knew right off bat what our cat had after giving symptoms.
Had to put Silvy down, pisses me off vet tried to rip me off.

Did pay $180 cremation with cedar box for wife:cheers:
itgirl25 01-30-2007, 06:10 AM  so sorry to hear about your kitty. nobody should be able to profit from someone else's loss...that's just wrong. RIP kitty. :angelhap:
1BadCBR 01-30-2007, 06:13 AM Sucks for the cat dude :nonod:
justpucky 01-30-2007, 06:29 AM there are good and there are bad in every career. Some want to help, and some just want the $$. Don't write off all Vets, but do find a new one when the wife is ready for another friend.
Sorry to hear about that....
But I take it you will never go back to that vet....:nonod:
Rider 01-30-2007, 07:40 AM Sorry to hear that man. Vets are in business to make money. They will try to get you to do whatever it takes to help out your pet. THey know most people will pay through the teeeth to keep their pet alive so they take advantage. I know all about taking pets to the vet. I have 3 cats and a dog and they cost more than raising kids.

Sorry to hear about your cat :( And oh yes, vets can be pricey! I always tell people to shop around, some vets are total rip-off's. It's funny, being in rescue I know what the COST of most of the items are (like shots, heartworm tests, etc) and I can tell you most vets out there charge a 300%+ mark-up on that stuff. I just feel that if vet care were more affordable more people would get their pets fixed, vaccinated, and heartworm tested/preventative purchased. :2cents:

I am sorry for your loss, that is really terrible, but please dont group all vets in with that one...I work part time at a Vet's office and have for many years now...yes there are those that will rip you off and not think twice about it (generally your franchised vets) but there are many, like the one I work for who is a good old boy and gives his clients the best cost he can, if not trade or barter for services...

Silv showed symptoms on Saturday, our normal vet could not see cat or get labs until Monday. Sent us to emergency vet clinic who could do labs.
Would have paid what ever it cost, if Silv had chance to live. Just struck me wrong when I called vet on $1500 in lab tests. Then comes back with $400 lab tests that told story. Live and learn:idk:
Wife has already found two flame point Himalayan female babbies for replacements, ready around March 1st:yikes:
Will post pictures:cheers:

:iagree: Probly alot of truth to that statement. My pup's vet is family so we get a solid deal.

Thats what the problem was!!! Never EVER go to an emergency clinic unless it is 100% necessary!!! (we never recommend it unless it is an absolute last resort b/c you always get screwed on the fees. but find a new vet anyway, the guy I work for would have FOUND a way to see Silvy before sending you anywhere else...again sorry for your loss, if you do get new babies let us know!

Rae, bet your guy would have been great:dthumb: Problem was our normal Vet did not do lab tests in house. Tests would not have come back till Monday.
