Well, this will be my last ride for a while, because of Korea. I figured I'd hit up the famous Cali canyons. The one it's gonna be is Idyll Wild. Who's the host? None other than Chappy. He lives around there, so he'll show us the good stuff.
http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p244/MotoVegas/Route%20Maps/Banning-Idyllwild-MountainCenter.gif
Also, Cloner is probably gonna make it. Anybody else like to participate? I anticipate a noonish arrival to Chappy's neighborhood. We're leaving Vegas around 0800.
I've told the girl, and caught an earful, but I'm still going. Who, in the SoCal area, would like to tag along?
marko138 02-21-2007, 03:38 PM Man that would be awesome.
I'd have to leave now to meet you Saturday.

Are you taking I-15? There are some places where the flow of traffic is 100MPH. Or at least there used to be when I grew up there.
saverok 02-21-2007, 03:42 PM ya me too....bike still in parts.....painting and parts are supposed to be tomorrow....so lets see....carry the 3...plus milage...plus gas.....ok...and drive time.....
I could be there monday...
Yeah, the 15, for the begining. I was in Cali on monday and it was a bitch. but lane splitting is legal!
And Chappy, I think the switchbacks you were talking about will be possible too. They're right there!
ebbs15 02-21-2007, 03:45 PM I wish... I'd have to leave... last saturday to meet you this saturday... and my bikes still in hibernation... :cursin:

Chappy_GT 02-21-2007, 04:14 PM And Chappy, I think the switchbacks you were talking about will be possible too. They're right there!
Most cages take those switchbacks at about 30mph. Going down is only 1 lane which is ok, going up from Hemet, is 2 lanes & ummm...er...aa....little faster than 30
Should be a GREAT day for a ride through the ruins on the north side! If you plan on coming bring your cameras :dthumb: Speaking of that.........Dlit, we'll have an opportunity to take that pic of us wheel to wheel, black & white, good & evil (as it were), doin burn a out

So it's Chappy, R6 and me so far. Anybody else?
I called a friend of mine, Big Dawg, he & a few others may join us. Dawg is on a cruiser, doesn't mind being anchor.
On our way back, from Hemet to Idyll Wild, we can stop for a bite to eat. I've been to one place called JC's Red Kettle. Great home-made grub. There's another place across the street (not sure what it's called) that has outdoor seating & 55 gallon drum BBQ's. Always smells awesome going through there on a weekend around noon!
Is there a link to this thread in "Off Topic" or "General Riding"? The more people the better :dthumb:

Weather should be good, looking at the forecast. Definately a little chilly in the morning, so layer up. I'll be wearing my 1-peice, with some layers underneath it. Neck protection is a good idea, so your neck doesn't freeze off.
YZFR61ST 02-22-2007, 11:23 AM just windy....:idk:
There's a strom tonight. Chappy's gonna go through there tomorrow to make sure everything is good.
drewpy 02-22-2007, 12:26 PM whats it like up in tiffin drewp? not gettin the same sunshine as us?
im getting plenty of sunshine, but the damn bike is in kettering and is in need of a oil change before i let her run again:idk: and we still have ridiculus amounts of snow and salt on the roads
Here's a little sample of route 74, which intersects with 243. I suggest you get napkins to wipe the drool off.

Yea, that's the Mt. Baldy loop, right? Been on it once to go skiing. Great canyon. After this ride, I'd like to organize another for the Rock Store (www.rock-store.com), Mt. Baldy loop, Big Bear, maybe Ortega hwy......just a summer filled with awsome rides :dthumb:
Chappy_GT 02-22-2007, 03:53 PM If the storm messes it up on top.........we still have options. I doubt the snow will fall on Mulhulland, we can ride that picture you posted (some friends of mine call that stretch "Magic Mountain"), or we could rip up the meat of either end of the I.W. ride

Yes thats the one. Its splits and you can either head up to Baldy or if you go the other way you will end up in Azuza Canyon. Both are great roads.

I can dig Mount Baldy because it's not too far from my house, but I'd go anywhere.

fnfalman 02-23-2007, 06:03 PM Weather forecast for Idyllwild:
Sunny
5-10 MPH wind
high 54-F
So, that means it's going to be slightly chilly. Wear your longjohns. And hope that any wet surfaces would melt by noon.:yikes:
justpucky 02-23-2007, 06:05 PM  I love you southerners... 54 is perfect riding weather... it isn't chilly at all... Chilly is 38F. :seeya: Have fun, post pics.
Chappy_GT 02-23-2007, 06:50 PM Well......8 miles into the 243 from the 10fwy chains are required. So going that way is out. The way I see it, we have 2 choices:
1: We can take the 10fwy to Palm Desert to go to "Magic Mountain" (the red 'X' on the map.)
2: We can brave through some possible wet roads & take the Pines to Palms Hwy (74) from Hemet to "Magic Mountain".

MAGIC MOUNTAIN:

Chappy_GT 02-23-2007, 07:53 PM So, we still meet at Moreno Valley? Let's meet there still and figure out where to go.
Yea, we'll still meet at the Starbuck's (2nd driveway on the right from the off-ramp). Wheels may not roll at 11:30, but still try to be there around then. Dlit's going to call me in a lil bit & I'll square everything up with him.
From Starbucks, it'll take about 30mins to get to the bottom of the mountain in Hemet. There is a filling station there, we can top off should we go that route. I'd prefer this route (the good twisties are at the ends of the canyon anyway, the Hemet side provides plenty of opportunities to scratch up your knee pucks  ). At the end is Magic Mountain, hours of fun if we like. :dthumb:

Only once (& never again :nonod: ) have been in freezing temps. When I lived in Montana, I had to ride my Tiller home from the shop. It was already there for 3 1/2 weeks waiting for a day to bring it home. It was clear one day & the roads were finally free of ice (lottsa gravel though). I bundled up & rode home. It was about 10 degrees. :yikes: I had to wear ski gloves (my hands still froze) that didn't really want to stretch enough to reach the clutch. It was horrible. The only other time I rode in freezing temps was at the track last Dec. 29 degrees for the first round......rofl.....my hands were killing me.

I can't find my tank cam mount. I'm in the midle of moving. I also can't find Cloner. He was suppose to call me when he arrived in Vegas, and never did. :idk: I'm hopping in the shower now and will be leaving soon. I told Fooey to call me and I will call hm in Baker to meet up with him in Victorville.
Chappy_GT 02-24-2007, 09:04 AM I hope Cloner's ok.
I have a mount that might work. I'll stuff it into my bag.

678 miles later, I'm finaly home. Majic Mountain was awesome. Good to meet you guys. Since my dumb ass left my memory card at home, I don't have many pics. I'll upload what I do have later.
Rsal86 02-24-2007, 10:19 PM I'm new to this site. I happened to be at the right time and the right place when I saw Chappy and the group gassing up. They were kind enough to let me tag along for the ride. :thx1:
I recently moved in the area (San Jacinto). It was an awesome ride. Can't wait to see the pictures.
Jayfooey 02-24-2007, 11:09 PM I had an awesome ride today with everyone!
Chappy, great to finally meet you, you rode a great pace, thanks for leading...
DLIT, Bro you've got to have one heck of a sore butt now.. lol
I can't believe you rode all the way out here just to ride on some of Southern California's finest roads... Be Safe in Korea and hurry back!

It's not too bad. That shows you how much I love to ride. I just wish i HAD MORE TIME OUT THERE. I was just starting to get use to it...Bad ass road!
fnfalman 02-24-2007, 11:53 PM Other than the heavy cager traffic, it was a good ride. It was a good send-off for DLIT. It was great meeting everybody and I think that we've enlisted a new member today as well.
I'll post some pics on Monday because my laptop is at work and I'm at an internet cafe that won't let me upload pics from my camera.
drewpy 02-25-2007, 01:29 AM dude, this is why i love twf :twfrox: a chance to learn new places, a chance to ride with new ppl, what can you ask for, besides more miles with more ppl :dthumb:
Chappy_GT 02-25-2007, 04:01 AM Well, the ride turned out better than I thought it would. I expected snow & a whole lotta gravel! Thankfully there wasn't any snow & a little bit of gravel on the way up the Hemet side of the mountain.
FnFalman & I met up at 11am & talked for a while til 11:30 when Jay Fooey, Dlit & his friend Josh rolled up. (Sorry we missed you Cloner & YZFR61ST)
We rode to Hemet & stopped at the Shell station at the bottom of the hill. While we filled up, we met another guy on a 2004 (I think) Interceptor 1000. Chatted with him for a bit & invited him to join us. :dthumb: He stayed with us for the whole ride. He knows of TWF, so we expect to see him here soon. (I don't want to list his real name as he might not want it known :sorry: ) The ride up the hill was decent. By the time we reached the switch backs, we had to contend with some gravel. From there we made our way to the Palm Desert side of the 74. Kept a steady pace & enjoyed the scenery (I may want to buy some property there some day, it's that scenic). We reached the top of "Magic Mountain" & pulled over to take a look at what we were going to straighten out in the moments to come.
Quite a few folks there. Even some vendors of home-made jewelry & trinkets. When we walked to the edge, Josh (I think) had said, "Take a look at THAT view", He was reffering to a young hottie having her picture taken by her parents. I believe they were here from Russia, had a pretty heavy accent.
As the fellas stepped to the edge to take in the view, I decided to go back to my bike to grab my cam & a smoke. When I got close to the bike I saw that same girl grabbing my handle bars & posing for a picture. I thought, "hhhmmm should I be mad or should I see this as innocence?". I thought the ladder & as I approched them, they quickly apologized & stepped away from the bike. I reassured them & removed my tank bag, gloves, & helmet & helped her on the bike for her photo. Nice family, I'm sure Dlit & the others may elaborate on the girl posing.
So, we saddled up & headed down the hill. Jay, Dlit, Josh, FnFalman.......hats off :dthumb: you guys jam!!  We went up & down a few times, but had to cut it kinda short because of time. Like Dlit said, he was just getting to know the corners, & yes........the man knows how to ride!
Anyway.........here are a few pics, I have some video, but I'm so dang tired (it's 1:45am) it's going to have to wait til tomarrow.
Jay Fooey, Dlit, FnFalman, Josh, & "the new guy"...... Had a blast!!!! I look forward to the next "West Coast" ride :dthumb:  :dthumb:

Man, that road is so sick! It's like a damn track. And the 74 was real nice too. Real technical at some spots. When I come back, in September, for the 30 days, if I can't get on the track, I'm definately heading out there again.
Chappy, you know there's some other guys heading out to SoCal next weekend? Yup. All the details are on 702sportbikes.com, in the planned rides and meetings section.
rockinthef4i 02-26-2007, 12:03 PM If you're looking to hit up some hardcore twisties, check out highway 74 in palm springs. It starts there and goes all the way to I-15. I haven't rode it all the way but I think it takes about an hour and a half. Most of the turns are like 30mph and the other side of the road is a cliff!! It's good stuff. I'm in 29 palms, ca which is like 45 minutes from there so I'd be down to ride, just hit me up.

29 palms? Are you USMC? Thats the ONLY thing out there.

We did sample part of 74. The other part required snow chains, so no dice.
And let me add that chappy's bike definately deserved bike of the year. Guy painted it himself and it was flawless and smooth as glass.
Chappy_GT 02-26-2007, 03:49 PM Thanks for the compliment, Dlit

On the 74 from Hemet to I-15 is city stuff, however.......from Lake Elsinor (just after the 15) "Ortega Hwy" starts (still the 74). It leads to San Juan Capistrano. Good ride, & from what FnFalman was telling me, a lot of it's been repaved. Watch out for the pokey.
Chappy, you know there's some other guys heading out to SoCal next weekend? Yup. All the details are on 702sportbikes.com, in the planned rides and meetings section.
Sounds good to me. Just got my confirmation email. Looks like they're going to ride the Rock Store & Latigo. When I was 10 we used to take Latigo to the beach. Havn't been on that road since, but from what I remember my step dad's driving scared me to death because of how narrow it was. Now that I'm driving it should be fun :slol:
Chappy_GT 02-26-2007, 03:52 PM :nonod: I missed out...:nonod:
Many more to come, YZFR61ST. Here's to the next ride

I frequent the SMM (Santa Monica Mountains) before moving to San Jacinto and Latigo canyon is the crash capital of SMM. Very technical. Mulholland (between Kanan Rd and Rock Store) is a nice canyon to play. Or at least that was my view before riding the "Magic Mountain".

Jayfooey 02-26-2007, 09:46 PM Great video/pictures Chappy & fnfalman!
FYI: What we rode "is" the best of hwy 74 pines to palms (from Palm Desert to I-15) anything west of Hemet isn't as good as what we rode...
West of the I-15, hwy 74 is Ortega hwy, that's fun too...

It's a newer, laid back version of it, yes.
fnfalman 02-27-2007, 09:04 AM The Motard Man is a 70-years-old who is recovering from a hip replacement. He's what I'd call an OH - Original Hoon. A hooligan back in the days.
The other guy is a Harley guy who's not afraid of speeds and curves. His face was all leathered up from the many thousands of miles.

Marriage will probably happen on my mid-tour. I want to see how the first six months will go, before I tie the knot. If it goes good, then I will propose.

I was thinking the same thing. I've been to SE Asia as a single man I know what its all about.
Nah, I don't intend on f'n around. It's better for me to try the first six months out first. If it goes good, I'll propose. But I would hate to get married, and the time gets to her, and now I gotta get a divorce. F that. Consider it a trial period, I guess. I'm playing it safe. I do believe we can make it though. I'm depending on my 360 to keep me from boozing all the time. I want to use the time to get in shape, pay some sh*t off and study for the next rank. I know I'll booze out every now and then, but I don't want to go crazy. It sucks because my career field (AMMO) is like a force in Korea. The comradory(sp?) is high and it can get hectic. Just gotta stay outta trouble and outta my commanders brain.

sounds like a smart move to me... that'll be a long time away and a good test for your relationship... especially if your gonna get married. if you can't make it 6 months... then you'd never make it married... especially both being AD...
