Tank Bags

I think my tank bag has been scratching my paint a bit. The little swirly scratches. I always make sure the bottom is clean and the tank is clean when I put it on, but I still think its scratching. Its a Held magnetic one. IS there something you can put on between to protect your paint but still let the magnets hold well, or should I just start shopping around? Maybe its time to go to the strap kind...

I don't want to knock magnetic bags, but my mind's eye just feels more secure with something strapped onto my bike. I would say go to Joanne's fabric or your local sewing store and buy a piece of quality shirt grade flannel to put under your bag, but it might affect the magnets' ability to grip.

Yeah thats the lines I was thinkin along bumblebee, but I fear it slipping off with that. The magnets do work well, I have gone pretty fast with that thing on there and not had any worries..

Its sorta like gritty rubber.. it holds really well but I think its TOO gritty. I dunno, maybe I just need a coat of wax. Usually I use Honda spray cleaner and/or motocraft clear coat polish.

I only use my tank bag for trips and I always coat the tank with wax first. Mine isn't magnetic, but it still scuffs the paint.

I assume the strap kind, strap under your tank correct, or do they just strap on to the frame ? If it goes under the tank, that could be a pain for sure to swap it out too many times..

I have a magenetic Joe Rocket tank bag and have never seen any scratches from that. However, I keep my 9R regualrly waxed to prevent that. And as far as that pic...I got one thing to say! Camel Toe!

But I do wax the bike about once every month or month and a half. i didnt think so..just checkin...a tank bad would probably be a good idea for me..definately more handy than having to reach around the backpack for my wallet, keys, etc.... but all this scratching up the tank talk has me a bit worried..........,I dont travel all that much so it's probably not worth it at this point for me... I've got my backpack for now that works OK.

I know..but hey, I need a jacket first right!! oh god, here we go  so whats the best tank bag ? It really depends on your needs. My Aprilia has a plastic tank, so a magnetic bag won't work. I had a nice Cargo bag that I used on my RC51 that was very nice. My best friend has it now and is using it on his Duc. The strap bag I have for my Aprilia is a Teknic double decker. It's cool, you can unzip either bag and zip it to the base, so it stacks in either direction. The large bag has backpack straps underneath so you can zip it off of the base and wear it. The Cargo had that same feature, but was an expandable bag rather than two bags that zip together.

I will have a Joe Rocket Manta for next summer. It won't hold much, but it will hold the stuff I'd rather not have in my pockets. Can't say as to how it works yet, as it's one of those things that will be under the tree December 25th.

I would get a Joe Rocket magnetic tank bag. Mine has 3 good sized mags on each side and has never scratched my tank. It also has a strap for around the steering head. It has a map viewer, and it is expandable.... JR Tank Bag (http://www.joerocket.com/catalog05/us/product.cfm?pid=455)

guess if ur not riding 2 up on a regular basis, the passenger bags would work out nicely...but having that tank bag has gotta be handy for those quick stops for gas, smokes, and just sling it on ur back and keep on going when you park it.

Yeah, the only thing that actually annoys me about the tank bags are when I have to stop for gas with it on...

I also need to give my bike one more real good bath here in the next few days, and put a good coat of some real wax on, other that just the cleaners and polishies I have been using and see if it cleans right up. Thats all it may need. Gas Man, what kind of wax do ya throw on there?

Gas Man
11-04-2004, 02:34 PM
I use Maguires Gold Class carnuba (sp?) wax....it's good stuff. I would also recomend using Mother's cleaning clay bar...it is great to get out all sorts of junk. Works really well on the cars and trucks!

I have a 14-year-old RKA tank bag on my Honda. It straps on to the frame and uses those plastic catches to dismount. My old Suzuki uses a 23-year-old Kawasaki tank bag that uses metal clips onto the bottom edges of the tank. The only time I take them off is for gas. The RKA is three-times bigger, but they both work great. My friend had a magnetic bag that also worked great. One day he took it off and set it on his workbench. It picked up a screw and scratched his tank when he put it on. Mothers has a very good polish for removing surface scratches.
