ebbs15 03-06-2007, 12:19 AM Ok so I've decided to go ahead and plan like my leave is already approved. I'm tired of their jumping bs... and so I'm just gonna set up reservations and work on getting all I need together...
I've decided to go with ST tires... I've been researching them and still undecided.
I've got quite a bit I wanna do to my bike before I leave...
Exhaust, as I said Tires, sliders, GPS and mount, Saddle, tail, and tank bags, Double bubble shield, Jet kit, a corbin seat, and hopefully a paint job.
I've gotta get some rain gear... I'm looking at the A* RJ-5 and RP-5 rain suits...
I've changed my route a bit... I think I'm gonna have to drive straight from Anchorage to Fargo... then ride from there... it'll save me 2000 miles round trip and several days... all of which is extra riding time at Deals Gap and less stress on the body. being this will be my first multi day trip... I think Fargo to NC is more than enough.
I'm wondering if anyone else is going to be heading down from the Fargo, Chicago, Indi area and would like to meet up and ride down together?
Yeah I know it's quite early for most people to start nailing down plans... but I like to do my research... and make sure last minute changes are kept to a min.
so ya'll that have run long distance trips... is there anything I'm forgetting?

oldetymebiker 03-06-2007, 08:54 AM I don't know where you are coming from, but some of the Al Can roads used to be pretty hairy. I would pack a couple extra tire tubes (yep, if you get a sidewall tear you'll be screwed, otherwise) a lot of CO2 cylinders for your tire repair kit (you DO have one, right?). I might also fashion a mesh rockguard for the radiator, and bring along some JB weld in case you take an unscheduled, uh, offroad excursion, and end up seeping fluids from undesigned orifaces.
Same goes for the "personal emergencies" kit. A comprehensive first aid kit would be something I would not make that trek without. Let's see, long distances, no traffic, bad roads, no cell service, gas service few and far between., moose, cariboo, logging trucks, Canadian drivers.....
Sounds like the stuff lifetime memories are made of; or nightmares, IF you aren't preprared.
....AND don't forget a bloody CAMERA so you can share the photos with us...you lucky sod.

yeah from what I've heard the Alcan roads are still pretty crazy... and I don't really wanna be change'n a brand new tire on the side of the Alcan... so I'm DRIVING from AK to Fargo ND. my bike will be in the bed of my truck. I'm hope'n when I do get my crosstraining package it'll be in the summer so I can ride that trip... but for a first trip over 300 I think I'd be bite'n off more than I could chew...
:iagree: with OTB
That far of a trip get a good bag/backpack that you can strap to the back, also comes in handy as a backrest!!
Sounds like OTB got the rest of it nailed down...oh yeah, how bout a map??
You might also want to get contact numbers for people so you can call when you get there or are on the way there...
I will add more as I think of it!
oldetymebiker 03-06-2007, 09:04 AM My bad...after looking at your post again, looks like you're trucking the bike down to the states? Then riding the rest of the way? I'd still pack the tire and first aid gear, mebbe skip the tubes.

Yeah I'm gonna get a hand held GPS... but I'll never go anywhere with out maps and a compass (yeah... I was a boyscout)
Oh I called the lodge... they still have single rooms $90 and econo rooms (ones that share a shower) $60
I don't need a personal shower that bad... just as long as "share'n a shower" doesn't mean a sprinkler in the lawn...... then again... I'd be fine... it's YOU who'd have to deal with that sight

how far is Cincinatti from Champaign... cause I'm leaving Fargo going to Offut (my brothers there so free place to stay) then it's 488mi to Champaign... I figure if CrayZ's going I'll get a hotel room there and then it's 540 from there to NC...
NONE_too_SOFT 03-06-2007, 01:45 PM do you have a room reserved?

guys I have no idea about june yet, I'm not even sure I'll still be in Illinois in june. so don't count me in yet.
ebbs what was your plan/ which route were you going to take if I wasn't coming? are u passing thru champaign anyways on I 74?
that is a LONG ass roadtrip for a newbie like me tho. and yes if I come I will be at the WAY back of the pack, so u might get bored... (remember I max around 90-100 depending on whose speedometer you're looking at)
also I've heard scary stories about riding the highways on a 250...but I really want to go...
wasnt there some other guy thats coming w/ u ebbs?

You must go!!! Its good experience!! By then you should be really comfy on your bike!!! If not, no pressure!
I never had any issues riding on the highways on my 250, the only thing I had to stay really aware of were the big trucks, and as long as I pinned the throttle and passed them as fast as I could (which I still do) there were no issues. You dont need to be going more than 80 on the hwy anyway!! You will be amazed at the effects of going at high speeds for long periods of time will have on your body, you def need to stop often and chill!
Crazy250 03-06-2007, 03:58 PM not to mention the gap will prolly eat me alive. :yikes:

Hey I'm new too remember! and as for topping out at 100... trust me... I won't be cruzing at that speed... 70-80 (depending on speed limit) I may have a bit of fun now and again... but if your with us... I'm not gonna run off and leave ya... :dthumb:

other wise the Econo room was 67.87 a night... they had one left with a double.

 glad we could help!!! Honestly tho, you guys have nothing to worry about, you dont need to kill yourselves trying to go fast, and from what I have heard from ppl here and my local guys who have run the dragon, you dont even need to break the speedlimit to enjoy!
Crazy250 03-06-2007, 04:24 PM a floor is all i need. I'll just stick my head in my helmet and BLAM i even have a pillow . or hell I'll wheel my bike into the room and sleep on that.
the only thing I'd really be worried about is going to slow for other riders when I start out. how crowded is it?

One of the best things to remember is: Other than paying attention to other riders for your own safety, DONT WORRY about what others are doing. Pay attention to what you are doing, faster/better riders will pass you if you are slowing them down and they will be watching YOU to make sure they dont get to close, etc...a good, more exp. rider will pass you in a manner that will not endanger you or them.

Gas Man 03-08-2007, 03:18 PM Rae better wrap herself in a full size complete body condom!!
And remember guys... drinking hard all night makes for a bad rider the next day. And you need to be on top of your game. I bet Rossi or Hayden don't go out and get smashed the night before a race!

I'm 21... average age around here is mid twenties, so you wont be TOO out of place.
age means less and less the older you get, nobody will care.

going out and getting smashed isnt a good time any way you put it, i maybe drink like that a few times a year. I got all my binge drinking/puking days out of my system.
working as a bartender has taught me how to really hold my alchohol nowadays though.
that said, i'll be hangin out at the bar down there so long as i dont have to ride there. when i'm not riding that is.
NONE_too_SOFT 03-08-2007, 03:29 PM you were 1 letter off after the 3rd, hah
Gas Man 03-08-2007, 03:29 PM NTS... I'm the same way. Once almost got myself checked in for achohol poisoning. That wasn't cool!! funny though!
NONE_too_SOFT 03-08-2007, 03:31 PM last time i got stupid drunk (like i dont remember trying to hit my friends and taking my shoes off at the bar) was my 21st, almost a year ago. the next day (my birthday) was horrible, worst hangover in my life. Since then i've gotten progressivly better at drinking.

Dragon food gets old quick, Robbinsville sucks monkey balls. It's all good Maryville is not dry and it has decent restaurants. However, it's the other way from all the good roads in western NC.

byron12 03-08-2007, 05:16 PM Robbinsville is in fact dry and it does not have good resteraunts. If I am able to make which as of now I see nothing holding me back I will be driving up in my truck complete with supplies for grilling out. I don't drink much when riding the next day but I do hear that rossi parties it up pretty heavily...:dthumb:

That was what my story was from. I was still so drunk the next day I missed my uncle's wedding. I woke up and fell on the floor. Not too mention serious gaps in my memory from that night!
