GsxrJack 04-13-2007, 11:55 AM This Easter I was at my inlaws and was outside having a cigarette and my daughters boyfriend came out and started talking to me and finally said, " John, I love your daughter and want to know if its alright with you if I ask her to marry me" ....well that took me by suprise as i wanted to say hell no  , but I was good about it and said I would be happy to have him marry my daughter...
hes a good kid and it was kind of nice that he asked me like that.....just didnt think guys still did it,,,,,
NONE_too_SOFT 04-13-2007, 12:07 PM there are still some proper guys out there...
I'm hunting them down one by one
R1up0n1 04-13-2007, 12:10 PM I'm probably going to do the same to my g/f's parents later on this year, or early next year. I know her mom wishes it would happen asap.
Her dad on the other hand is a state rep, and I've only met him one time.... so I don't know if I should even bother with him.
devilstonic 04-13-2007, 12:16 PM When my ex-husband proposed to me, he did ask both my parents before hand. Of course they hated him and told him no, he did it anyway.
And since I needed a date for my wedding, I accepted.

my older one, the 25 year old , 2 weeks ago she was involved in a rollover and crashed into a parked car. thankfully she was not hurt and her seatbelts saved her life :angelhap: ,,,,,I think the accident made him realize how much she means to him,,,,,,,,

so how much is she getting you to spend on the wedding?
mondos06cbr1000 04-13-2007, 01:08 PM wow another north shore guy, im from stoneham we should meet up and ride sometime.
But anyhow, congrats! There are still some good guys out there:cheers:
Both of my sister's husbands did that. I told my boyfriend he has to in order to get on my father's good side. Haha.
I think guys think that father's are old fashioned or something so they need to. Congratulations though, glad she's okay. Have fun dishing out money for a wedding!
I actually just did that same thing right before I got engaged in december. I was more scared of telling her mom after I asked permission from her dad. I am a proper little southern boy though, still say "yes sir/ma'am" and "no sir/ma'am." I would get punished if I didn't mind my manners as a kid. It's sorta sad that people being respectful is surprising in this world.

Captain Morgan 04-13-2007, 02:52 PM Haven't seen you around here for awhile, Jack. Nice to have ya back. Congrats on the new son-in-law-to-be. I would also ask permission from a girl's father prior to asking her, but I don't see myself ever getting married anyway.

When you see shows like the one on MTV where the parents find their kids alternate SO's (Parental Control?), it makes me nervous about the future of our Country. The way these SO's treat the parents is nothing short of obnoxious. And don't get me started on My Sweet 16.....

damn haven't seen you on here in a while... Welcome back!
anywhoo... the one occasion where I was serious about the girl... her father passed before I could ask... her mother is 100% Korean and speaks VERY little English... so I asked her older brother... He and I didn't see eye to eye on many things... but I think that just me asking solved a lot of our issues... now if only the girl would have stayed in one place long enough for me to ask her
marko138 04-13-2007, 05:43 PM It's def. a sign of respect. I asked my wife's father first. We'd dated for 4 years by that time and we got along pretty well....he was cool with it.

Oh I know, MTV is not real life however (thank god). I think they play up some of the stuff but one of the girls on My Sweet 16 was at the high school I went to and I can tell you from personal experience that her attitude was real. I know that other show you're talking about, I always though those kids were really rude, even for brats. But yes from my knowledge most people are not like that which is why it's not surprising to me to hear someone say they asked their wife's father before proposing.

Gas Man 04-15-2007, 01:19 AM Jack.. sometimes us whippersnappers get it right.
I asked my now father-in-law at thanksgiving. It was 2 months after I got my current job (not the same title but same company), which I told him I would finally be able to provide for his daughter. Told him I wanted to do it at Christmas. He agreed and thanked me for asking.
I think its a great and respectable tradition. If I ever have a daughter, the boy better ask me before he asks her. That way I have time to shoot him and barry the body before he gets around to her!
So congrads Jack. Has he asked your daughter? Does she still live with you? How hard was it to not tell her? How did mom take it?

I was 31 when I asked my wife's mother the same (her dad had died a few years before). She was kinda shocked too, but thanked me & gave me permission. Being a gentleman has it's rewards. My mother-in-law doesn't bother me (woo hoo), the friends I have in my life are real & would step in front of a bullet for me (& vice versa), & the respect is in abundance.
Great post, Jack  rep'ed
Gas Man 04-16-2007, 11:16 AM As I said... I didn't ask my mother in law... but in a way I did. I bought the engagement ring from her (she's a jewelrer and divorced from from my wife's father sense she was a kid)... so that put a neat twist on it.
