How much money can really be made from a summer lawn mowing "business?"

My parents have always told me that I should mow lawns all summer and that theres good money in it but I've always brushed it off. But theres this RICH kid at my school (first car is a modded out 2007 F150 on 22's, 15 year old sister has a 330i) and he says he mows lawns over the summer and seems to make serious bank off of it. Is there actually some substance to my parents advice? Are they really trying to help? Do parents serve a purpose? :idk: But for real though how much do you think 2 dedicated people with 2 lawn mowers and a truck could make over a 4 month span with a lawn mowing business. How do I get the word out? What do I charge? More questions to follow. P.S. I've figured out STARTING something, anything, is a BITCH!

I have worked for them, and know someone that owns a lawn service. They also do snow removal in the off season, if you're in an area where it snows. Many of their snow removal customers are mowing customers as well. My friend says that the real money is in applications. Fertilizers, aeration, power raking, etc. He has all but stopped mowing lawns and does 90% of his business doing applications and snow removal. I drove one of the trucks, it was a crew of 3. With the right equipment, we could hammer out 15+ lawns a day. I'm not sure what the customers were paying, but it was plenty.

how much you make, depends GREATLY on the quality of your work, how well you advertise, how much you have to invest into your overhead(insurance, fuel upkeep etc), and how well you manage your business and customers. that being said, applications is where money is best at, but to LEGALLY do them, you need to be licensed for pesticide and fertilizer application, insured, etc. if the govt finds out you're doing that sort of stuff, even spraying a little weed killer or even miracle grow on someones plants for them, without a license you'd be in big trouble.

If he's rich, then most likely he's got cash all the time because he doesn't have to pay what us poorer folks have to pay for... All you need is to get you a couple lawns in a couple neighborhoods and grow from there. I started mowing lawns when I was in 7th grade... I did my moms, my dads, and my two grandma's. By the time I was a senior in HS it had gotten out of control. I was doing 30 or so lawns each week. $10-$25 a pop cash. It literally got to be a 40+ hour a week job, but I was making some serious cash for that age... Do a good job for your family and people you know, then tell them to tell their neighbors... Or... Just knock on doors... I did a little of both. If you play your cards right, you can even use their equipment! Ask them what they pay now for just a cut (if they use a service)... Undercut it by $5-$10 if you can make it worth it... I wouldn't do anything for under $20/hr unless it was really easy (flat, straight, no trees and crap to edge around).

I have absolutely no problem mowing a milf's lawn....wait are you guys talking about cutting grass? F*ck that!!! I pay my neighbor's kid to do that.

When I was young I mowed lawns and shoveled snow. I made s*hit load of $.

what I was thinking was more about AFTER you've established a solid business, to maintain the success. but start small and dont go overboard or finance equipment, if you decide it isnt worth it, you will still have to pay for em. good work will get your name out there by word of mouth easily.

i used a lil push mower and cut four or five yards a week and made some nice bank, but it was near a country club and a hour and a half job was 60 bucks so it can be done

to heck with lawn mowing. the real $$ is in poop scooping. didn't you see that 'king of the hill' episode where bobby teamed up with that guy for career day and went around cleaning people's yards of dog doo? they just mighta been on to something there. :dthumb:

That is true IT. I know a couple that has a biz doing that. They make mad chedda on it!

More questions to follow. ! I would have payed you 100$ today to mow my lawn. Man I did not want to do it. After work I just wanted to buzz some backroads and enjoy the TX night fall. Even tried to talk the crew mowing down the street into doing it for me but they had other places to go. (I mean come on, I was up to 75$ and a beer apice but they said no).
