Just a heads up for those that are coming to the Dragon for the "Unofficial" Rally!
On Friday, June 8th there will be a gathering of all TWF'ers and those they bring with at the Tapoco Lodge at 7 pm. The lodge has been gracious enough to allow us to use the river deck for our gathering and offer the use of their grill for us to use to grill out burgers and hot dogs, etc. If you would like to grill out with us, please bring whatever foods you would like to eat to the gathering. This means burgers, hot dogs, buns, chips, sodas, etc. I am sure we can find a grill man or woman to do the grilling if anyone would like to volunteer!
We will also be able to use the pool as regular guests that evening after we are done grilling. Wee!! (No food or drinks allowed in the pool area.)
I will be there meeting and greeting and we will have some giveaways and some fun contests to liven things up!! I cant wait to see everyone there!! :woo: One more week!!!
Please note: This is a gathering for us all to chill out, have fun and relax after a day of riding the dragon. We are all there to have fun and enjoy ourselves, but please remember, we are all adults and need to behave in an appropriate manner.
fpzx10 05-31-2007, 09:37 AM I'm there!!!!!!! Can't wait to meet you guys and gals
Thanks Rae!! Man sounds like you been hard at work planning. I can't wait. If anyone doesn't remember food we can have a meet up around 5:30-6 at tapoco and ride into Robbinsville to pick up some stuff if anyone is interested. (I am riding up and won't have anywhere to bring food, so I have to go LOL)

How long have you been riding? I saw that you put 1000 miles on your bike. Is that your total riding experience? It wouldn't be a good idea at all if it was.
PlayfulGod 05-31-2007, 12:00 PM nah i had a 88 cbr b4 too, all together I have a few years under me. I know to stay within my limits, it just the ride there, then riding the gap, which I've never rode. Could come up to hang out n eat tho huh lol
R1up0n1 05-31-2007, 12:02 PM I'll be there... I will be hopping between the TWF and FZ1OA rally's Wed-Sun.

Pippi 06-01-2007, 05:46 PM Have fun everyone! Just pulled out of there a couple hours ago after a week and 1200 beautiful miles. Watch the cops, on our way out today passd about 4 Blount Sherriffs on their way up to the Gap. Also, really watch your butt on the Skyway! The weekends are the worst, didnt really have any problems during the week with LEO's (with the exception of Georgia/Blood Mountain area, got a ticket :( GRRRR) The Skyway has undercover LEO's, one was posed as a broken down biker, another is an unmarked Jeep Cherokee. A girl I talked to got a 70 in a 45 on the skyway - not even fine she has to come back and appear in front of a Judge! Just stay safe, have fun and watch out for lane crossers (TONS), LEO's, and stupid people in general.
Pip

Yeah the skyway is heavily patrolled now. They ticket up there more than they do at the gap. BCSO is pretty cool, they will leave you alone mostly unless you are doing something really stupid in front of them. A couple of them ride up there so they dont piss in their own pond.
ebbs15 06-02-2007, 12:25 AM Or just come next time you get a chance, doesn't have to be for a rally.
Oh I'll hit it up when I can... but it probably won't be till I get back from Korea anyways...
but yeah I'm looking forward to lots-O-pic's!
Gas Man 06-02-2007, 10:39 PM Man it is going to be one hell of a party!!

We are finally to the week of the rally, this is going to be great. Unfortunately after having an entirely too long dry spell, looks like the wet weather is moving in. We could see some rain for the rally. I blame drewpy!

:cursin: :cursin: :cursin: NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Every other freakin YEAR it rains! One year its nice, next year it rains, then its nice, then it rains.....
Hopefully its nice for the most part... crazy how you go around a mountain and its hot and steamy, next turn it rains, then the next turn its hot and sunny and you're already dry.
psychochild28 06-03-2007, 09:33 PM The rain prolly will follow him down....it's supposed to rain all week here.....:cursin:
wednesday you will be good to go, looks like we might have thursday and friday to have no rain maybe scattered, saturday we could catch a lucky break as well maybe just some short ones. I forsee sunday as the best chance to get hammered though. I will keep an eye out and watch the predictions.

I'll be leaving sunday morning... so that's a good thing. Hope I don't get hammered with rain in the campground... the tent can only penitrate so much water.
psychochild28 06-04-2007, 01:41 PM I can't wait for this weekend:cheers: A lil nervous but excited non the less. I've already read the great tips for riding the dragon for the first time that were posted by Trip(reps given) on Nee's thread.
Sorry for anyone that gets behind me:leaving: .....I will pull over to let you pass though:twfrox: or at least stay in my lane so you can pass.

Seriously, DON'T WORRY ABOUT PEOPLE BEHIND YOU. I can't say that enough. If they get pissy about you holding them up, it's their fault they aren't faster. A faster rider will pass you on his own without your help. Only move over if you are comfortable (don't do it in turns) and avoid pulling off into gravel (it can put you on the ground fast!) It's nice to pull over for people, but it is not mandatory. The grumpy rider can always make another run. It is your sole job to get yourself through there safely, not help people set their best time through there EVAR!
No matter what anyone says, the fastest riders at the gap will agree with me that you getting out of their way isn't a concern to them. It's your safety because we are breaking the law in the first place. We had a long discussion about this very subject a few weeks ago because a local doing a wheelie passed and bumped a guy on a 1098 and put him off the side of the mountain. It is our job to pass you safely, not your job to let us pass you.
As always ride your ride, the rest will figure itself out.

Props for a good post, that makes ME feel alot better too!! I know I will be slow, coming from FL where we have ZERO twisties, this is gonna be like riding on MARS!!
Although after saying all that, be on the watchout for idiots, it's best to let them go quickly as you can. Let off if someone is trying to make a stupid pass on you and get as far left as you can.

Yea it's those ppl i'm kinda nervous about..... plus I tend to get nervous when people are behind me in general. But if i can't pull over I wont...gravel sucks :cursin:

Just stay around the white line your first couple of runs at a nice smooth pace. You will be fine. I try to make it sound a lot worse than it is so when you get here, you are prepared for the worst and relaxed when you see it's just riding. I will probably be tempted into some fast runs, but if anyone wants me to make a slow run with them I will be more than happy to stick around.
I have been getting reports of heavily increased cop presence today in very high numbers. Like something is happening up there. This might be one of the targeted weekends, which would seriously suck bad. I know this is mean, but hopefully it was just cause of an increased number of accidents.
NONE_too_SOFT 06-04-2007, 04:50 PM boooo i dont want to come home with any pink souveniers :(
drewpy 06-04-2007, 05:01 PM agreed.... but the other roads down there are great too....jeeps should make an appearance and take us out
trying to find out if anyone else went up there today that is reliable, but not having any luck.
drewpy 06-04-2007, 05:04 PM so friday if we wake early can prolly get a few good runs in before most ppl wake up and the squids get out in numbers
NONE_too_SOFT 06-04-2007, 05:08 PM what time you think we'll get there will?
drewpy 06-04-2007, 05:09 PM we will get there at 6am-ish
drewpy 06-04-2007, 05:11 PM we are leaving kettering at 10ish-midnight so we arrive at down there around sun up to ride
NONE_too_SOFT 06-04-2007, 05:11 PM so whats the point of waking up early when we dont have to go to bed at all ?
so friday if we wake early can prolly get a few good runs in before most ppl wake up and the squids get out in numbers
What day are you getting there?
We are definitely getting up early and running the gap on friday, 7am pancake runs are definitely in order especially with the temps suppose to be getting in the mid 90s.
drewpy 06-04-2007, 05:12 PM when do you think you can leave akron?
drewpy 06-04-2007, 05:13 PM we were just talking about that...lol
NONE_too_SOFT 06-04-2007, 05:14 PM when do you think you can leave akron?
as soon as i get off work, prolly around 3-3:30 ish. i shoud be in dayton by, oh i'd say at least by six.
drewpy 06-04-2007, 05:14 PM this is killing me, sitting here talking to you two and talking to my dad and psycho about riding.... my new 2ct are just begining to be shredded
drewpy 06-04-2007, 05:15 PM if you want to you can meet me at groveport and we can ride down there together
drewpy 06-04-2007, 05:15 PM im leaving after work and heading down to meet up with everyone esle instead of backtracking
NONE_too_SOFT 06-04-2007, 05:18 PM if you want to you can meet me at groveport and we can ride down there together
sure, where is that... is OSP comming? i'd love to see (maybe take a spin on) his new buell.
drewpy 06-04-2007, 05:21 PM i havent talked to him, but i dont think he is making the voyage to the gap first
NONE_too_SOFT 06-04-2007, 05:23 PM gotcha. well hook me up w/ a map to groveport and i'll hook up w/ you there... i gotta go pick up some tie downs this week, any suggestions on what to get?
I am super excited about this and I go almost every weekend it's nice. I don't know what's different. Probably just the whole staying up there all weekend and hanging out and not having to come home to go to work.
NONE_too_SOFT 06-04-2007, 05:26 PM im stoked to see how big of *******s all you guys are in real life, but thats about all... i guess it'll be cool to scrape my pegs on some corners, but im kind of bummed i wont have any leathers to wear down there...

:iagree: Full gear should be REQUIRED any where....let alone the gap. :nonod:
NONE_too_SOFT 06-04-2007, 05:50 PM thats fine, i understand where you're comming from. I get by in jeans for now, and when i can afford something better i will. I'm not gonna straight up Lie and say im 100% safe all the time, but i DO follow basic guidlines for keeping myself alive in a crash.
Full gear 100% of the time is just unrealistic when you ride as much as i do.

Is it?
NONE_too_SOFT 06-04-2007, 05:56 PM IMO, yes. i havent driven a car in a month. i dont wear adequette leg protection half the time, but being a responsable, safe rider, and preventing accidents by being aware and capable is much better than simply thinking you are safe cause you are wearing full gear. prevention is 99% of safety.
like i said i understand where you're comming from though, not trying to start an argument.
its all perspective.

Yes...but crash's aren't always the riders fault. Then what happens? You get F$%Ked.
I am of the opinion that if you have any value of your own personal well being then you'd wear full gear at ALL times. Regardless of how little or how much you are on the bike. :2cents:
But people gonna do what people wanna do...and in the end I only care about myself and my wife.
if i buy pants i cant come to the gap :skep:
screw the pants
I didn't get leathers til this season and I rode the hill a lot last season.
PlayfulGod 06-04-2007, 06:02 PM :iagree: full gear is nice, n I plan fully on getting what I lack now (pants n boots). I dont drag my knees (yet) so. lol. but alot of my riding is at 45-50mph stop n go traffic on the way to class. And wouldnt I look cute in class in full leathers?? lol. I been down before so I know full well how well jeans hold (dont)up lol. Pants I want tho are like $250+ and boots another $101 at least, just not in the budget atm. Tho as NTS stated I agree with ya too n not trying to argue the point of saftey.

Now that I got the devil out in me, it's time to bring in the angel. I do have this to say after I saw a certain accident not involving gear at the hill, I went out and bought a leather suit soon after before I ever went back.

i think we just found out how much I value my own existence then. crashes arent allways rider fault, true. but i dont let my guard down... ever. sure i may get blind sided by somebody running a red, but pants arent going to help me in that situation. leathers dont prevent impact damage, they prevent road rash.

Post up your pants size, maybe someone has some extra gear they can bring. You never know...
NONE_too_SOFT 06-04-2007, 06:15 PM 32 baby... you got some kanga's and some knee pucks and i'll ruin their resale for sure.

You gotta do what you gotta do buddy. If you dont care why should I, right.
BTW...you should buy a turbo busa and ride it in flip flops and shorts.

Aww man I only have a ten footer... does that mean I have less street cred?
But I am getting a twin turbo, and taking off ALL my brakes so you can see my chromed wheels, and getting a 330 rear tire with enough neon underbody lights to light up a city block... maybe that will get my cred back up... :leaving:
I put hydraulics on mine I can still do wheelies even with the swingarm.

I wouldn't be surprised. I have seen choppers that lower, but not bounce. Doesn't seem wise with trying to balance.

NONE_too_SOFT 06-04-2007, 07:12 PM You gotta do what you gotta do buddy. If you dont care why should I, right.
BTW...you should buy a turbo busa and ride it in flip flops and shorts.
i do care... but like every other god fearing American i accept that there are risks all around me when i step outside my front door every morning. Once again, what is leather going to do for you in a collision? does it have the ability to prevent broken bones and internal hemorrhaging?
again, i state, that i am a huge supporter of wearing gear. But i am not a gear nazi. being a smart rider is ten times more effective than just wearing tons of gear and thinking it makes you safer.

:iagree: , I feel like the situations where the leather pants are going to play the biggest role are the ones that you are more in control of, i.e. low-siding while kneedragging or something. And since you know you dont have them, you can ride accordingly. Getting rocked by a car that blows through a red light, you're gonna have bigger worries than a little rash, and leather pants prob won't help you.
I'm sure there are exceptions, but it's really all about how much risk YOU are willing to accept, just like they said in the MSF course.
Regardless, I am a full proponent of wearing gear.
NONE_too_SOFT 06-04-2007, 07:21 PM as am i. I wear it every time it is appropriate. but while riding around the city or riding 1 mile to work, sometimes i dont feel it neccessary.
Once again, riding ability and awareness > gear when it comes to safty.
hey peeps, quit jacking the thread!! Wear what you want, its your rear, but know that I am a proponent of at least most gear ALL the time...do i wear my leather pants to work? No, but I do wear everything else, again its your butt, do waht you want!!
Back to the topic at hand!
What day are you getting there?
We are definitely getting up early and running the gap on friday, 7am pancake runs are definitely in order especially with the temps suppose to be getting in the mid 90s.
dang, so I guess you werent kidding...I dont suppose anyone would volunteer to just bring mine back huh?? I suppose I could get up for food...
dang, so I guess you werent kidding...I dont suppose anyone would volunteer to just bring mine back huh?? I suppose I could get up for food...
Definitely not, I wake up 4:30-5am, so 7 is sleeping in for me.
Ok, finally talked to someone who rode the loop yesterday. Enforcement was nonexistent. They saw one park ranger on the foothills parkway, which is normal, and that was it all day. So hopefully we can play this week.
justpucky 06-05-2007, 07:40 AM Sunday of memorial weekend (May 27) I saw four county cops on 129 / 411 (four lane portion) heading into the gap, but only one cop on the road (at an accident scene) in the dragon. I would expect them to step up that weekend more than now (two weeks later).Weather's not looking great for this weekend. Hot Hot Hot, and chance of rain. (happens in the mountains when it gets hot and humid - go figure) I'm heading up for a quick run wednesday after work, anybody be there yet?
And if you guys are planning an early morning run Saturday before the heat and partiers hit the road, post up the rondevous time, it's over an hour for me to meet you guys at Topoco. Not sure I'll do it, but I'd like to know what the target time is.

You left early sunday, you missed all the cops and a good number of wrecks. Hell, what you make 1 lap? Gap runs on saturdays are best done 7-8 in the morning, that would be a better day to spend the rest of it away from the gap and in NC and come back late in the evening.

Saturday's I sleep in. Screw getting out of bed a 7 for a ride.
Yeah, I made one lap. it was only my second time out this year, I was tired, and still had to fight traffic on the way home. I know better than to push myself, and try and handle stop lights when I'm exhausted.
Give me time to get into shape.
Saturday's I sleep in. Screw getting out of bed a 7 for a ride.
getting out of bed at 7 psssh...that's what time you have to be at the overlook for a pancake run.
justpucky 06-05-2007, 08:16 AM :sorry: Saturday's are my sleep in day.
And while I have to say, it's a nice stretch of road, I can't see a time when I'll run more than one lap. As I get into better shape, I'll run the gap on the way out or home, but I ride to go places. If I want to run the same curves over and over again in one day, I'll pay for a track day.
This was you wasn't it? I thought I saw ya, but wasn't for sure til you posted up that you was there. I was showing a red SV1000S the ropes when you were up there. Was hanging out with Zee when you went by here.

That's fine, there are a lot of locals that won't even go near the place. Too much for their acceptable risk. Some just ride through like you say you are going to do. Nothing wrong with that at all. I like to live up there, I have a lot of friends that do as well and we can spend the day just hanging out watching the action or make laps until we feel like jello. Ride the way that is best for you, makes it much more enjoyable. Riding like a damn fool on a public road isn't for everyone.
Hope to see you there pucky!!
justpucky 06-05-2007, 08:48 AM had to laugh, when I stopped at the other side for a soda, I met some guys from K-town. Wanted me to ride with them sometime in the future, but they were talking about running the dragon a 100 MPH, and stopping for beer in Alcoa on the way home.
UMMMM.....
No Thanks.

Well there is a reason for that. The site is updated by the husband and the pics shot by the wife. They are working some stuff out.......

There are a few that consistently run in the triples on that road and none of them are that stupid and most trailer up there. So just laugh idiots like that off.

Yeah, the one that was hitting on me admited that he only runs 55. But I don't need to ride with people who feel the need to show off.
And I'll have a beer or two at dinner and drive the cage... but too much balance and coordination on the bike. No alcohol for me thanks. Probably won't ever ride with someone who's been drinking if I know it.

I don't drink and drive ever. Lately I haven't been able to drink at all, been having a lot of problems with my stomach that no one can seem to diagnose so they use the ole stand by Irritable Bowel Syndrome = we don't know what you have so we will make up something to cover a lot of s**t we don't want to deal with so go away.

You are staying at Deals Gap right? I say we meet up there around 7:30. We can talk on friday at the party at Tapoco. I say night runs are definitely on the schedule as well. Even though I know the road, I go extremely slow on it at night so any skill level is welcome on these. I about got in a serious accident with my fiance coming back from a party up there one night in my cage. A deer decided to come across my bumper and we slid very close to the edge of the mountain.

There was a thread, but I think it got jacked and you can't make heads or tails out of it.
and the schedule of events :tt:
Only event planned is the party friday night, rest of it is figure out as you go along. Rides are best left to individuals wants/needs and not associated with the rally no worry about legal issues then. That is also why I decided to stay up there when I live so close, you don't have to worry about the trip home at night and you can hang out and figure out when you want to leave.
Shan, I started a thread asking who was coming. It got turned into a who's not coming thread. Here is who I know.

maybe more, I told my group about it and they might show up.
justpucky 06-05-2007, 10:11 AM See, that's a problem for me. I don't "hang around" well. Specially not sitting aroudn in 90 deg temps. Meeting up for a ride if I were there anyway, maybe, but I have stuff to do at home too.

LOL! Welcome to the south, it's hot here. That's why our winters aren't as bad.
justpucky 06-05-2007, 10:22 AM Say that all you want, but I know that these temperatures are above normal. You shouldn't play with 90's regularly until late July early august. Right now average temperatures should be low to mid 80's, and that I don't mind. 90's humid and triggering thunderstorms; not a reason for me and the SV to "hang out". Meet, Ride, Get ice cream or a rootbeer float, yes. "hang out" and see what happens, not settled enough to waste the day yet.

I am from a 15 minute drive away from the southern most point of Louisiana, this is still cooler than normal to me. As far as humid, it doesn't feel like you are taking a shower to me yet, that is when it gets bad. It's actually been extremely dry lately because of the absence of rain which has brought the heat. You missed out on the normal spring time storms that bring tornadoes.
If you are complaining about humidity in a drought, you are in for a shock.
justpucky 06-05-2007, 10:29 AM yeah, compared to the gulf, not humid, but I spent a year in the other gulf ;) and this last week was STICKY! It's going to drop off to slightly above normal Monday, it's just the three days you guys want to hang out that I don't like.

I didn't think the persian gulf was all that bad, it was hot, but I didn't mind the humidity at all. My parents lived in Dubai for several years before moving to China.
Back on topic, where do you tourists want to go most besides the gap?

Yeah no kidding, we are hurting to keep the lakes high for recreation and get some power out of it. We don't generate much, but it's cheap and clean and eases our fuel cost some.

I'll probably head over to rickmancc's here in a bit to help him get all loaded up.

Im most certainly down for riding down there Thursday after you get off work. im packing VERY light, so luggage is no problem. and im a mans man, if we cant get a place to stay a sleeping bag would suit me fine (although thats more gear to lug around). hell i'd be happy on the ground, so long as its not raining. Maybe they'd let us in our room early if we showed up and begged?

drewpy 06-05-2007, 07:03 PM actually i have friends at eku which is right off of 75, maybe we canride to there crash and then pick up ealiy and finish the trip intime for a pancake run if anyone wants to do one on fri morning, i just want a clean shot at the dragon before its muddled up
psychochild28 06-05-2007, 07:06 PM i wanna do the pancake run....:cursin:
what if we took the truck and some bikes down early...and ur dad, colleen gramps and grandma come whenever with the van and whatever's left?

drifting is for rednecks and gangsta asians in movies. I always thought that movie would of been a lot funnier if some smarta** set up his car for cornering and wasted the moron drifters who were busy scrubbing speed by drifting.

You can still get pancakes though if you want, the store does sell em. I have just heard it called that because of the early time, but it originates from locals going up there really early to meet up and eat some pancakes and head out for a day of riding far away from the crowds during the day.
R1up0n1 06-05-2007, 10:26 PM I still getting packed... I had to tear apart the apartment to look for the tank cam mount for the mini dv cam. ahhhh I finally found it!
I helped rickmancc get all his bikes loaded up... the FZ1 and 3 motards.
I'm getting there...just more time.
marko138 06-05-2007, 11:19 PM :sorry: Saturday's are my sleep in day.
And while I have to say, it's a nice stretch of road, I can't see a time when I'll run more than one lap. As I get into better shape, I'll run the gap on the way out or home, but I ride to go places. If I want to run the same curves over and over again in one day, I'll pay for a track day.
 Well I now see where you and I differ. I never ride to go somewhere. I ride to beat the hell out of corners. Commuting sucks.

I talked to him on the phone last night, he didn't seem to want to put that many miles on the middle of his tires before he got down here. Plus he is worn out from the drive to work.

drewpy 06-06-2007, 06:13 PM ok, final plan and this one is sticking to it, nts your meeting me at 5 pm at groveport, we are riding to kettering sleeping there, getting up when my dad gets there, putting our bikes on the trailor and leaving around 6pm and will arrive there around noon, but after working 4 ten hours days, riding down would be a very bad idea

Boudreaux's butt paste if you are not use to long rides, whatever you need to hydrate yourself because it's going to be hot and not a lot of places to stop for water on some roads. However, leave any ego you have at home , it's funny but also wise.
I will video tape anyone who wants a tape as long as I have tape. If we can find someone good at editting video (marko), I can send them all my raw footage to make a cool video, otherwise it will be putting a couple of runs requested onto a DVD and sending it to you.
drewpy 06-06-2007, 08:17 PM if you feel like putt-ing you can follow me if you dont mind riding slow
NONE_too_SOFT 06-06-2007, 08:18 PM no ego. just eager to keep practicing.
