TaintedLove 06-04-2007, 06:33 AM I have a question. I am unfortunately very short. 4ft11 and a half. So the question is are any of you this short? My BF says a bike can be lowered but my legs can't grow LOL. Anyhow just wondering how tall you all are and what you have!!
neebelung 06-04-2007, 06:40 AM Well, I won't be of much help to you, as I'm 5'8" with a 32" inseam. I have a '95 ZX6R, which I'm not just flat-footed on, but my knees are slightly bent. I can flat-foot or nearly flat foot on MOST bikes (I think the KTM Super Duke is about the only one that feels unstable to me/that I can't get good footing on).
There's a thread in this forum on seat heights of most major manufacturer's bikes. More important than your overall height is going to be your inseam length... if you're of average height, but have a very long torso, then you're going to have less clearance than someone who's maybe shorter but has very long legs.
Many bikes can be lowered, though there's much debate as to whether or not this is safe. I'm of the opinion that bikes shouldn't be lowered as it compromises the handling. Bikes are engineered to perform optimally at their stock height, so when you alter the height, you're changing how it performs.
That said, there are "right" and "wrong" ways to go about lowering a bike. If it's done properly (and done the same amount front and back, i.e. if you drop it 1.5" in the rear, do the same in the front), you MIGHT not notice too much of a difference (but that's going to depend on the bike).
Another way to get some height is to get women's specific riding boots with some heel height. SIDI makes several styles of high quality, supportive, safe riding boots that can give you up to 2" in height. They'll have the ankle reinforcement and oil resistant sole that other riding boots will have, so you won't sacrifice safety. I do NOT recommend boots like the Icon Bombshell boots for riding. They're :drool hot, but they're truly not any safer than any fashion boots when it comes to riding (no matter WHAT Icon contends :nonod: ).
TaintedLove 06-04-2007, 07:13 AM Very Informative thank you. My inseam is 28 :( See what happens when u have two short parents? My Mother is 5ft even and my father (short italian ) was like 5ft5

i am 5'4" and i have an 04 kawasaki zx636 and an 06 harley davidson VRSCR street rod. both needed to be lowered. i am fine on the 636, but that harley weighs a ton! i really need to stay on top of my workouts to maneuver that around. :dthumb:

Becca_007 06-04-2007, 07:56 AM 5'5" here with a 32" inseam. I have a 2005 Kawasaki Z750S and for the first year I just rode it at stock height and sacrificed being able to manuever it around the garage or driveways.
This year I lowered it and I love it all that much more. I only lowered the rear end (lowering links) and after several miles of testinf I think it still handles just as well if not even better (perhaps better only because of the confidence gained in being able to touch the ground with more than tippy toes). I don't feel the front needs to be touched at all. Oh. I also adjusted the rear shock and that dropped the height some too. If you do lower the bike be prepared to adjust the hickstand as well.
The Bandit Gurl 06-04-2007, 08:35 AM I am five one and all that I own is the ninja 250... and I am going through alot of trouble just to get it lowered...
What I always wondered was that the 250 is a starter bike, why wouldnt they make a sports bike that comes lower?? My brother started on a rebel 250 and I could touch on that, however I love the kawi green sporty look too much...
and so I am in the process of lowering my bike right now...

Sportbikes by nature are higher and have a higher center of gravity. It's just the nature of a sportbike. :idk:
That said, the Ninja 650's were developed with a LOT of thought given toward women riders and newbie riders. They're a bit lower, and a LOT narrower through the saddle (I mean who cares if a bike has a 29" seat height if it's a HUGE, wide thing to straddle, right?) to give women a bit better footing.
There are several "vertically challenged" women here...and you can def work your way around several things.
Everything Neebelung said is right on as alwaya!!
What you can also do is practice leaning over to one foot. I am not normally an advocate of the one foot stop, but my best friend is 5 ft even with VERY short legs. I am teaching her to stop with tippytoes, then parctice using the one leg to take the weight, so if she ever needs to she can.

Why would something with more ccs be aimed towards a women and a beginner rider?? Shouldn't they really start on a 250??

neebelung 06-04-2007, 12:56 PM Why would something with more ccs be aimed towards a women and a beginner rider?? Shouldn't they really start on a 250??
Because it's a twin (a 650cc twin isn't as powerful as a 600cc supersport, i.e. a new ZX6R).
By and large, I'd say yeah, a 250cc is a GREAT starter bike, but you'll also see tons of people touting the SV650 and SV650S as great starter bikes that people (male and female) won't "outgrow" quickly (the SV is just one of the most superior "all around" bikes... great for beginners, great for seasoned riders, great for the track, etc....). Kawasaki recognized the popularity of the SV and intro'd their own 650 to compete with it.
neebelung 06-04-2007, 12:58 PM Oh and one more thing... I've heard of lots of girls gaining an inch or even two inches (stop it, boys! :skep: ) by shaving their seats. Basically, pull off the vinyl covering, and "shave" down the foam padding toward the front of the saddle, then replace the covering. While you'll have less comfort, it can gain you good clearance, which gives you better footing, and therefore more confidence in your riding. :dthumb:
:iagree: While I hate the thought of it, you can learn how to ride and get comfortable, and replace the seat later when you are feeling ready to tippy toe it...

Not just indestructable.... there's so many preservatives in a twinkie, they (whoever "they" are) joke that if there was ever a nuclear war, the only things that would be left on earth would be cockroaches and twinkies.
Back _Marker 06-04-2007, 10:02 PM What I always wondered was that the 250 is a starter bike, why wouldnt they make a sports bike that comes lower??
answer: ground clearance
the lower the bike, the less clearance it has for carving corners. the smaller the engine size, the lower the ride height (thinner profile gives it better ground clearance with a shorter ride height). that's what makes the 250 popular for shorter new riders.

welcome to the world of sport bikes!!! Always remember, this is primarily a mans sport (which makes it so fun for us to play too, silly boys, bikes are for GURLS!!!), and while women are fast coming on the makers of bikes and gear just dont move fast enough...there is a whole market out there they are just now beginning to tap into for us!!! It will get better...i think most of us girls felt the same way when we got started...my first jacket was a mans jacket b/c womens didnt fit me AT all!! Within the last 2 years tho, and I think Nee and Itgirl will agree, they/ve been there with me, the stuff available has increased dramamtically, but as for bikes, it looks like for now us lil women just have to deal with whats out there or find something else to love!!!

Just throw a Peep in a vacuum chamber. First they get really big then when you let air in, they get really small
Or you can always light them on fire like an ordinary marshmallow

:iagree: And one of the things that's great about Teknic is that most (if not all) are sized like dress sizes, i.e. 2, 4, 6, 8... not just S-L.
Joe Rocket/Power Trip are also cut with room for boobage, but their sizing is the more generic XS-XL.
justpucky 06-05-2007, 12:20 PM Trip posted a pic of me on the dragon mem. day weekend on the TWF Party thread. I've got my fully perfed Teknic jacket and my perfed Frank Thomas leather pants.
Katherine 06-05-2007, 01:16 PM I'm 5 even with a 26.5 inseam.
I wear very thick soled boots, lowered the crap out of my bike and still tip toe, but dammit I'm riding!
On my CBR, I side saddle. Its not the safest for something like Myrtle Beach Bike Week, but it's not that hard to do.
Have you found a solution yet?
