In need of a new job...

Im looking for a new job and am open to possibilities in just about any field as long as its somewhat interesting work. I would prefer something salary over commission but a job that is both would be okay. Currently I have 7 years (going on 8) in banking and Credit Union, including about 3 years in mortgages, and I am sick of it and need a change. Thought about car sales but the hours suck and the pay is minimal but bike sales is something I would consider if there was salary involved (hours are a little different at most bike dealerships). anyone live in the MD/DC/Northern VA area that has some insight on companies that are hiring? I am willing to start at the bottom for decent pay (while taking a pay cut) as long as there is room for advancement preferrably sooner rather than later. so, what ya got for me TWF?

hahah... dude i would sign up to do that in a heartbeat if i could get paid for it. Stick with morgage and open your own business. My brother in law owns owns his own morgage broker business and he pulls down a cool half mil a year. You dont want to sell vehicles of any kind. The money sucks something fierce, unless you are in managment. (one of my neighbors is a sales manager at a local dealership).

I figured auto sales would suck something awful but i wouldnt mind working for one of the big companies on the corporate level.

I was a helicopter crew chief and ended up getting a job with Boeing when I got out. That lasted 10 yrs til I got laid off, but it was good money and I actually vested with them, so I'll get a small pension.

No I know what you mean, and you aren't really telling me something I havent already thought about in the past anyway. Maybe I just need to stop being a lazy punk and get myself back in school or talking to a recruiter.

On the military: Not sure about active duty, but I know Nat'l Guard is handing out $20,000 sign on bonus (depending on MOS) and then the pay for the weekends you work. Pretty good money overall, for the work that is done. On sales: I work in the Automotive industry. Salesmen are paid on commission per vehicle sold. Just say you get $200/car (close to average) you sell 10 cars a month, you get $2000 pre tax. There are spiffs and such that some dealerships will run, as well as the different manufacturers will reward high salesmen too with different promo's. There is a "base" salary, but it's more of a minium than a salary. The base where I work is $1,200/month. So (using a $200 average again) if you sell 4 cars, you get $1,200, if you sell 6 cars, you get $1,200, if you sell 8 cars, you get $1,600. I have a couple friends that work at the local Zuke/Kawi dealership, and the pay is simialar. They make between $150-$400 per rig sold. Differs between bikes/atv's/jet ski's/etc. I would assume there is a minimum there too, but not sure what it is. My :2cents: If you do go with sales, especially Recreational sales, be sure to get with a place that sells bikes and atv's and sleds and jetski's. I've seen too many places that have just summer toys lay a LOT of sales men off in off season, or if they are not getting laid off, they aren't making much money. Depending on what you are looking at making, the auto or the rec sales field, you can probalby figure on making around 30K a year, if you can sell. Sorry for the novel. :leaving:

If your a good salesman i say go for it. People make money at what they are good at. I couldn't sell a chocolate bar to a fat kid so i decided to become a CPA. But in the end do what you enjoy and the money will come sooner or later. I have had jobs where i made good money but was miserable in the job. Money isnt everything. Wow can't believe i just said that.

I have 14 years in banking and I feel your pain. Working for a bank ain't near as profitable as owning one! And you will get burned out after a decade or so. I am still doing the gig though since changing industries regardless of your degree you have to start on bottom again and work your way back up to the salary you used to be making... Becoming a Real Estate agent or Mortgage Broker right now is not wise since the experienced are having a hard time making the $$ at it. Never was any money in selling cars/mobile homes/motorcycles. I really want to get another job in construction like in the movie "Office Space" "F'N'A Man" Low pay and long hours but no resonsibility after you clock out...

If I ever relocate somewhere in the area of one of the locations I'll probably take it... Probably won't use it for anything much, just to gather more debt, but I'd just be interested in having the knowledge.

well i took the harley/buell program. it cost about 20k. but i qualified for grants. so i'm out about 10k outta pocket. i considered doing the import program too but didn't want to stay in fla that long( my wife and kids stayed in tenn while i went to school). moneywise, in my area, pay is not that good, after i graduated i contacted the local hd dealer and they offered me 9 bucks an hour. but talked to some people in va beach and the average pay there is around 25/hr. just depends what ya want out of it. i really wasn't expecting to make a fortune. but doing what ya love is very important.imho. my belief is that if you're gonna ride, you should know your bike inside and out especially harley's. and that was more of what i wanted, more than seeking a career. if i get a job in the industry making good money, thn that's a bonus. but knowing i can tear my bike down to the very last nut, bolt, and gasket is priceless. i would def recommend the school to anyone interested. it's not easy, but the reward is amazing.

about working as a bike mechanic, you will make more money doing side work from the dealership. when i was an automechanic, i was approached by a few bike dealerships and i asked them what did their mechanics do during winter. he said they chopped wood. this is in columbus OH. -a|ex
