Drinking and Riding

I didn't want to start this up in 1HBC's thread as a courtesy to her and not to the rider, but what do you think on the issue? Personally, I lost my grandmother to a drunk driver that got off scot-free. I do not respect anyone who drinks and drives/rides. I saw a post NTS made not to long ago about cops bringing drunk kids home instead of giving them a DUI. I think that is bulls**t, they should be put in jail and have their license taken away for at least 5 years on the first offense. Drunk drivers aren't just a "wrong decision", but a habit for alcoholics and they are one of the most likely group of criminals to be repeat offenders. You a**hats don't deserve the freedom to drive when you endanger everyone on the road by drinking and driving and deserve the fate you meet when things go bad in your "wrong decision." I just thank god that kid didn't take anyone else's family/friends with him.

You make a conscious decision to drink, so why not plan ahead and make the conscious decision to not drive?

I don't drink anymore (except a rare glass of wine when going out to dinner), but even after the one glass I don't drive. And riding after drinking? No way. That's just crazy.

one of my father-in-law's cousins had attended a poker run 2 summers ago with his son on the back of the bike (a harley dresser or something). they were en route to the next bar when he lost the bike in a corner. it tore his right foot completely off and he lost his leg up to the knee. thankfully his boy wasn't badly injured. drinking and riding is stupid, but with your kid on the back yet?! who makes a dumb decision like that? i have never drank and rode and never will. not even after just one. :nonod:

True story. Several years ago I lost a step sister...a really nice and outgoing girl after being hit by a drunk driver in a car accident. Her boyfriend...a cool guy and good friend of mine lived but was hurt really bad and is cripple to this day. He was a really athletic guy...could do 1 and 1/2's off of the cliff at the rock quarry when most were afraid to even jump. Very involved in the community...blah...blah...blah and very out going...not anymore.:nonod: The guy that hit them served one year in jail. :scratch: A short while after this dude got out of jail...he was back in the same town drinking again and walked out of a bar to cross the street to get into his car...and drive home.:tt: Well guess what? He stepped out into traffic and was run over and killed !! Karma mofo....although I felt bad for the person that hit him and it still didn't bring back Mary or Julian. As far as an officer giving a teen a 2nd chance and/or a ride home...I don't have a big problem with that...I was giving a 2nd chance when stopped once when I was a teenager and I've appreciated it ever since.

it's a shame the people killed by drunk drivers don't get that 'second chance'.

I don't drink any more. Got a bro with a problem and kids that look up to me. I loved drinking and seldom ever went over my limit. Even then I never did the driving afterwards thing though. Slept where I fell, seriously. I don't think it is cool to put anyone at risk regardless of what your doing. If I caused a death or injury I would have emotional trouble the rest of my life (probably take up drinking again!)

I have the self control to drink a few beers have dinner or whatever and drive and be under the legal limit. I have had a beer before with lunch and ridden my bike I see nothing wrong with a responsible adult having a drink and operating a vehicle. That said dunk driving is wrong and illegal and I have no problem with harsh legal penalties to that affect. I wouldn't be against a cop driving a teen home if they were like that to everybody not just people of a hiher social class unfortunatly that is not the case so yes everybody should be punished equally. On an interesting note ferrari f1 driver lorenzo bandini used to have three glasses of wine before a race to calm is nerves, but he died in a fiery crash at monaco so what thats say?

I am always the dd because my wife is the drunk in are family. I have the self control to drink a few beers have dinner or whatever and drive and be under the legal limit. We live in downtown chattanooga and when they have events in the area we always walk there are some bars close by as well good for the drunken sloppy wobble back to the house...

When I was younger I was drunk and drove 1 time. The next day I didn't remember driving home, scared myself bad enough not to ever do that again. Luckily I didn't hurt anyone. I will have 1-2 beers with dinner while out and drive but #3 and I don't drive. I will not touch a drink if I'm on the bike. When I was younger and went to a lot of parties we found the best way to avoid people drinking and driving was to gather up the keys when people came in and drop them in my friends aquarium which was loaded with piranna :)

I am not against drinking, hell I am catholic and a cajun coonass. I love drinking, but I never drive. I have been known to get angry if people suggest drinking and driving while I am heavily intoxicated. What irritates me the most though is my uncles who had their mother die from being hit by a drunk driver, have gotten into cars drunk after this incident. It makes me sick.

Unfortunately tho we cant control others actions. We can do our best to lead people in the right direction and let them know we care enough that we DONT want to see them be stupid, but in the end, its not our decision.

I fully agree with Trip's initial statement. Any more than one beer, and I won't drive. And I won't touch a drop when riding.

I have been battling this issue a bit more lately. I keep coming accross some of the old school bikers. I came accross a group yesterday sitting in a park. Old dudes.. been riding for longer than I've been alive. Some with nice Harleys, some with nice Jap cruisers, some with old rat bikes. All drinking beer out of can/bottles wrapped in paper bags. They were cool for old dudes.. but man... talk about generation and thought process gap!!!
