bombadillo 12-26-2007, 09:36 PM I know myself I am very distracted while talking on the phone and I can't maintain a line well in a car, so I don't do it anymore. I have thought of riding with a cell phone jammer because of issues around me that I have with people on phones. You can buy a jammer that will stop any GSM call within about 50-60 feet of you for around 200 dollars. I know I'd rather have one of these than any radar detector for my own protection. I can pay a ticket, but I can't afford a broken back or skull from an idiot in an SUV. I just wondered what people think about them and if anyone has ever seen or heard of them. I was just listening to some talk radio where a host used one in a restaraunt and it worked great. He stated "this was the first time I've used it, and even though its illegal, it definitely won't be the last!" Other than the person using it to dial 911 I don't see any downside to this at all. Tell me how many people really dial 911 on any regular basis to begin with.
PiZdETS 12-26-2007, 10:18 PM Interesting concept. I would consider using one but would love it if it could be targeted. As in the person to my right is weaving all around their lane with a cell, send the jammer wave that direction.
I wouldn't want one that jammed everything all the time, it would at least nead to have on/off capability. Having your cell cut out on you in the middle of a convo, important or not, sucks ass.
Let us know if you find a website or business selling them.
bombadillo 12-26-2007, 10:19 PM They're all over just google cell phone jammer. down to 150 and up to 1000 depending on the range. You can turn them on and off, but I know if I rode with one, it'll be on all the time.

Another caveat I just thought of; what do you do when your call drops? Get pissed, look at the phone, try to dial back again etc.
Now imagine you're a piss poor driver, you're going to take your eyes off the road completely, stop making steering corrections, become irritated which effects your driving even more.
I'm thinking they're not such a great idea. Especially if you had one on all the time and EVERONE on a cell suddenly had a dropped call. Could easily be pandemonium. :readng:
Large jammers can be detected easily and if you use them often and you will get caught. You are not only disrupting personal signals, but you could interfere with commercial signals. We aren't talking about a ticket or a simple fine if you get caught. You could be responsible for a very very large fine, a civil suit where you could be in debt for millions of dollars, and jail time. Especially if you knock out a large industrial signal or some kind of safety/government related signal. If you do pursue this, I recommend a very small range.

I agree, I think they would make a bad distracted driver into a very bad completly oblivious driver.

exactly... it'd take ALL of their attention off the road and focus it on the phone to figure out WHY it all of a sudden dropped...
now if you could do like a 300ft radius... maybe a little better...
vabarber2 12-26-2007, 11:58 PM I understand your concern but:

Not to mention With the terorist threat these days that could be looked at as some big time chit!! They could label you a terorist and send you away!
jnn7404 12-27-2007, 12:05 AM I agree with alot of the posts. It could make a slightly bad driver into the worst driver. I believe it would do more bad than good.

THat is what I thought too!
Amblyopic 12-27-2007, 10:53 AM Signal jamming is illegal. just FYI. You're looking at a big ass fine, but I don't quite necessarily think it's jailtime....
that being said. I'd say look at a directional jammer that does pulses, not straight jamming. Can be easily done, and for the cheap for the most part too. Keep in mind that depending on the frequency you're jamming you could be hampening other communication, ie emergency response vehicles possibly operating in the same band, yadda yadda yadda... I'm sure you get my drift.

Depends on what you knock out.

As I said... Illegal

Blocking & Jamming
The operation of transmitters designed to jam or block wireless communications is a violation of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended ("Act"). See 47 U.S.C. Sections 301, 302a, 333. The Act prohibits any person from willfully or maliciously interfering with the radio communications of any station licensed or authorized under the Act or operated by the U.S. government. 47 U.S.C. Section 333. The manufacture, importation, sale or offer for sale, including advertising, of devices designed to block or jam wireless transmissions is prohibited. 47 U.S.C. Section 302a(b). Parties in violation of these provisions may be subject to the penalties set out in 47 U.S.C. Sections 501-510. Fines for a first offense can range as high as $11,000 for each violation or imprisonment for up to one year, and the device used may also be seized and forfeited to the U.S. government.
So I was wrong in what I posted earlier. It does possibly include some jailtime.
Gas Man 12-27-2007, 05:39 PM 11 JUMBO... for each phone you jam :yikes:

Yeah- my employer should be in it deep. Can never get a signal in the building- except when a customer or big sales meeting is around. Tell me that's unintentional.:wbs:
Amblyopic 12-27-2007, 07:09 PM *perks*
Ya know you can find the jammers pretty easy right?

Report him.
Amblyopic 12-27-2007, 07:15 PM Report him.
:iagree:
He'll probably get a cease/desist order first though... but yeah. Dime that mofo out!
bombadillo 12-28-2007, 12:59 AM Its funny to see how many people are against these things. I talk on my phone constantly, but when I do I amost (and I don't say always) always pull over to take the call if I do take it. I also have common courtesy and leave a room or restaraunt if someone does call so as not to be distracting. I think that if more people would just have the decency to do these things it would make it a lot better for the rest of us and we could deal with having dinner without having to hear a story about your screaming kids at home or a business venture gone sour. Nobody wants or needs other peoples drama and i'm frankly sick of it. Again it was just a proposed question of what you thought of them and I don't think that I would ride with one for many of the mentioned reasons above. Doesn't mean I'm not for the new laws in 08 and the laws coming into place.
ceo012384 12-28-2007, 02:56 AM I don't think people would be any less distracted if you had a jammer. Probably more distracted, because their phones would cut out and they would be looking at it trying to figure out what happened...

I actually don't have much against it. I'm quite for it. I get tired of damn near getting hit in parking lots and on the highway by soccermoms and powersuiters the like whose only way to get them off the phone is to surgically remove it from their head.
I wish they were legal. It'd be like a mute button. What's that? You're being loud and obnoxious just because you can while me, my family and friends are a) trying to watch a movie b) trying to eat in a restraunt (btw. I request, damn near demand, when I'm at a restraunt everyone at the table turns off their phone, i HATE that) c) whatever.... all the sudden, pew pew!!! as i point my jammer in their general direction. no signal, no talkie talkie.
