eyeorknee 01-04-2008, 01:36 PM After reading through a few threads, not just on this forum, but other bike/auto forums, I've noticed a strong opposition/distaste towards California environmental standards. I live in Cali, have all my life, so I know first hand the frustration involved with being regulated just a pinch more than than the rest of the country. Things are more expensive and we aren't allowed to use all the goodies ther rest of the 49 are allowed to. But on the other side of the coin, although I wouldn't label myself a tree hugger, I am environmentally aware, and I don't understand why there is such a hatred for the regulations that are trying to do a good thing. You always hear jokes/complaints about LA smog, but often times, these come from the same people who hate on the regulations trying to better the situation.:idk: As frustrating as the extra costs and regulations may be, I simply accept the costs/restrictions and believe that ultimately, it is for a good cause.
Do people share the same sentiment that I do and are just having fun and exagerating a tad when they post, or is do people really hate eco friendly standards and feel they are stupid? I know that emissions for vehicles are only a fraction of our environmental issues, but isn't a step in the right direction, as small as it might be, still a step in the right direction?
SVRider 01-04-2008, 01:38 PM I just stay out of Cali, so I don't have to deal with it.
I also drive a full size pickup, and an old muscle car.
:idk: what do you think?
trock 01-04-2008, 01:45 PM I want to move to Cali when I graduate from college if that counts for anything.

making decisions for the entire country based on one heavily crowded area is absurd. if you guys got a problem. yeah go ahead and do what you want to try and fix things but keep your nonsense to yourself

:iagree:
Cali's got a lot of problems.... aint no lying on that. Lots of congestion and the most SUV/Gas Hungry vehicles I have seen (okay other than a tractor show) were all in Cali... Y'all love ya some big vehicles...
At least in Texas we use the bigass trucks we buy and they actually have a practicle purpose other than showin' off your floss, ice, and bling.... just my :2cents: but not knockin' against you personally sir.
eyeorknee 01-04-2008, 02:07 PM I have no problem with big trucks/SUV's/muscle cars - especially when the big vehicles serve a functional purpose. I agree with you guys...I'm not anti-SUV/ everyone should drive a hybrid/ uber "save the world" guy, I was just wondering why so many people rag on Cali standards for trying to better the Cali situation.
In no way am I suggesting that the rest of the country adopt our policies. It just stands out to me that people, in and out of state, really talk down and criticize the regulations that have been put in place to help control our problems.
eyeorknee 01-04-2008, 02:10 PM Oh and btw, Cali does have some stupid laws and regulations. I hate how someone on a sports bike can get pulled over and ticketed for their after market exhaust while Harley riders can ride around all day setting off all the car alarms in neighborhoods with their straight pipes and get away with it 99% of the time.
trock 01-04-2008, 02:17 PM I know on stangnet forums a most of the cali people hate it because it is hard to mod their cars to any extent.

Tell your politicians and vocal tree huggers that. California (I miss living there BTW) ALWAYS looks down their noses at the rest of the country with a holier than thou attitude.

personally I don't feel that our government is able to fix anything other then the emptiness of their own pockets...:2cents: let alone the environment...

exactly! no reason to murder ourselves if the other 90% of the world doesnt give a flying ****
King Bob 01-04-2008, 05:06 PM cali has a lot of issues. the people running the state think they can govern the country. wtf is up with that?
I'm all for owning a practical vehicle that suits your needs, not just some gigantic gas sucking behemoth XXXL to show off your wealth. I see no need for SUV's, minivans and full size vans do the same thing, just not as good looking.
Carolina 01-04-2008, 05:26 PM minivans and full size vans
:slol: :slol:
Just kidding they drive well and are comfy, but it's just not for me. My wife's Montero and my Expedition serves it's purpose with two kids and two dogs and traveling a lot it's the perfect fit for us.

eyeorknee 01-04-2008, 05:26 PM exactly! no reason to murder ourselves if the other 90% of the world doesnt give a flying ****
Personally, I don't agree with this thinking. It all has to start somewhere. This sounds quite similar to the "my vote doesn't count so I won't vote" and the "since he did it, that means it's ok for me to do it" train of thought. Although I have no problem with the "But officer, the cars that just passed me were going 85, I was only going 75!" argument:wink:
Phenix_Rider 01-04-2008, 05:46 PM I drive a big ass truck because it's all I could afford while I was in school, and it gets me around in any weather- including nasty snow storms and floods. I ride a motorcycle because it's ridiculously fun and it's clean. Why should my bike that gets 45mpg average be regulated to death when brand new cars are lucky to get 20mpg? My heavy old '94 truck gets 12, my dad's '67 gets 12 and most new vehicles are marked at 15! You'd think with "improvements" like EFI and dual overhead cams and all aluminum engines that mpg would go up! I shut my lights and computer off when not in use, but I think it's stupid to say that any car more than 10 years old is a polluting monster that should be crushed.
Shows that encourage drivers to choose Hummers and chit should be fined. Motorcycles that get over 35 mpg (even if they don't pass some tests) should not. Makers should not have to detune a bike to pass emissions tests. All that does is force riders to deal with lousy (sometimes even dangerous) fuel delivery, or bypass things and make emissions even worse!
Amblyopic 01-04-2008, 06:12 PM .... or bypass things and make emissions even worse!
:iagree:
But yeah. I've got a pretty nice truck. It's a v6, because I didn't need a v8 for what I do/did. I bought it because it was practicle. Could I have bought the Hemi that passed everything on the highway but a gas station? yeah... I could have.
It's called being a smart consumer, not being so stuck up that you have to show off that you can "afford" a hummer... Yeah, that's nice, but I betcha I'll cry less when some dumbass pulls out in front of me and I hit 'em compared to Mr $100k automobile.
ebbs15 01-04-2008, 06:34 PM it's because PEOPLE LOVE TO COMPLAIN! but in the end... they're not willing to give up something to help it out... they don't think about the big picture...
it's like Gas... if everyone would cut the amount of gas they buy in half and demand another form of fuel for a month or two ... there'd be a HUGE impact... but no one wants to feel the impact to force the change... yet everyone bitches about the price of gas.

I bitch because the oil companies are f'king us, and washington has their hands in the co's pockets... that's why I bitch....
I'd love to see more alternative fuels in use.....
OneSickPsycho 01-04-2008, 07:07 PM Here's my problem with California regulations... Like many (most) other laws, the only purpose they were created to serve is to make money for the government. It has absolutely nothing to do with the environment, but rather a way to fine people to generate revenue.
If you think it's for the environment, look up the Jesse James (West Coast Choppers) incident in which the EPA came after him... After being stuck with a hefty fine, he offered to recall all of his violating motorcycles and make them EPA compliant... they declined his offer, choosing rather to ignore the environment in order to take the cash. IIRC, it would have cost him more to recall and fix them...
p00kienrayray 01-04-2008, 07:13 PM cali is and has ALWAYS been different from the rest of the country. but for ppl to say that it should keep to itself and not try to spread its ways to other states, that's kinda like how other countries feel towards the u.s.
as far as dissing the tree huggers, i can understand how one can feel that its a pointless cause. it has to be done on a wide scale for any significant improvements. but you can't knock someone for trying to push for change.
regarding all the comments about ridiculously huge suv's found in cali, im speechless on that one. like i said, cali has always been the oddball. socal has the most automobiles in the world, but that was just something that was developed out of the lifestyle here (wide expensive land + big population= lots of hwy's=lots of vehicles)
yes, to agree w/ out of staters, a lot of californians are the most spoiled and greediest ppl.

:iagree: its another form of taxing us...i just paid off a $300 speeding ticket and a $50 street sweeping violation citation. shortly after i thought to myself, "wtf?"

WTF?
p00kienrayray 01-04-2008, 07:40 PM yea i've pretty much always got street sweeping citations ever since i got my drivers license. theyve always been $25, which is still expensive. but they just recently doubled it. i guess the 2 seconds that it takes a street sweeper to drive around a parked car costs $50...:skep:

oh. okay.... wow. I didn't know there was such a thing.
Yeah, just another way to make money....
Here's my theory. Is it or is it not ILLEGAL to park where you're parking.... If it is not... how the f'k can they fine you....

I plan to use about 1/4 th my winter amount of gas as soon as the roads are clear:dthumb: $10 in my bike beats the hell out of $60 in my truck. That's plenty of incentive to ride a more fuel efficient vehicle.

exactly... I don't drive much in the winter... just to and from work... next year I'll spend probably less than $1000 on gas... as I'll be in Korea for all but 1 month... then when I get to CO I'll be riding as much as possible... then again on my bike I'm only getting 37-40mpg...

Your lucky you just get a ticket... In Columbus you don't get a ticket, they tow your vehicle... You have to get down to the impound lot and pay a ticket, towing, and impound fees... It's like $100 and you have to stand in like with 50 other motherfluckers who are there for the same thing... Seriously, it's a terrible way to kill three hours that costs $100.

So no. I don't mind environmentally friendly. I just have having someone try to FORCE their views on me. I do tend to try to take environmental concerns into consideration.... But I hate that people try to tell me I'm wrong just because I don't follow 100% of what they say is the right way to do things.
I just wanna slap 'em and say "Hey f'k... when was the last time you went out and picked up a bunch of trash to help keep the environment clean."
But then I've got better things to do with my time than worry 'bout them. Say, hitting up some asphault on two wheels!
