Cons? Maintenance costs and they don't come in black. Pros? Everything else.

Just got the February issue of Motorcycle Consumer News and they have a first impression of the 848's unveiling in Spain. The 848 feels like a much lighter and smaller bike than the 1098. The new wet clutch performed flawlessly. And they thought that most riders could ride faster and with more confidence on the 848 than the 1098, and other liter bikes in general. Of course that was on the racetrack, I can't wait to see a full test.

:2cents:I was at my local stealer and the 848 and 1098 were right next to each other.I love both but the 8 was a little more cramped to me, the 10 felt a little roomier and heftier. so th 1098 would get my nod,but I'm 6'1" and 205lbs if that tells you anything. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh262/katana1100pics/01_1280Medium.jpg

Its always a roll of the dice to jump on a brand new model when it first comes out. Certain bugs have a tendency of not being worked out yet. Especially when you throw in new stuff for a company like wet clutches. The price tag too, thats sort of a con :) Other than those two, hell that bike is sex on wheels, if you do get one I will be part of the insanely jealous of you crowd :D

The chassis/riding position is identical between the 848 and 1098, if one fits you the other one will too. 848 is 11 lbs. lighter, mostly in the engine and due to a less-beefy lower triple clamp, smaller rear axle assembly, lack of steering damper, and a couple of lbs. from the wet clutch. The lower rotating mass of the motor makes it feel a little lighter in transitions and on corner entry, and the 134 hp and 70 lb-ft. of torque is easier to deal with than the brutal power of the 1098. I'd guess that an average track day rider, at a mid-length track, could go faster on an 848 than a 1098 due to a higher comfort level. A racer would probably be faster on the 1098 if he/she is able to squelch the feeling of being about to die, and get on the gas early and hard to take advantage of the added grunt. I can't wait to get the 1098 out to track days this year and exact revenge on all those liter bikes that used to pass me on the straight on my small bikes (SV and Ninja 650)!

on paper, the 848 beats the gsxr 750 probably mainly from the extra 100cc's, but all around nice numbers. i guess the bad thing about it is $$$. my cousin is currently shopping around for one. his local ducati dealer wanted $18k otd:yikes: when it's only $12,9 msrp. the dealership tried to :wbs: him that its a rare bike and limited...so he's still looking elsewhere...
