Hey Y'all. I'm new to TWF and I'm looking to get a bike(I figured there wasn't a better place to go to get advice). Just finished my MSF course and I'm mainly looking at two models: the 01 YZF-R6 and the 01 CBR 600 F4i:idk:... just wondering which you think is the better bike all around. I've heard the F4i is weak... I've ridden my brother's 03 ZX-6R and I would hate to get the F4i and find out that it really does feel weak... not that any 600cc bike feels weak right?... anyway let me know what you think.

weak? please explain...

if you want maximum power out of a 600, you need to keep the rpm within redline. no power down low or in the mid.

i don't like 600's for that reason. living on the redline is not comfortable for street riding.

the F4i is far from weak even with stock gearing. Change it to -1/+2 n it will pull hard even @4krpm in 6th gear

I cant speak for the 01 R6, but sense they are still known for a weak bottom end...

Then again if this is your first bike both are really more than enough for you. Worry with improving you riding skills rather than how fast you cant go or who/what you can out run :dthumb:

Welcome to the addiction.

Thanks guys :thx1:
I really appreciate it. I figured it wouldn't feel weak by any means, I was just wondering if one would be weaker then the other cause the f4i is known as more of a sport touring (at least that's what I heard about the models made after 03 when they introduced the RR) but I had no idea about the 01. You're right though, I shouldn't be thinking about what I can outrun... it's an ego thing:bas:

I've been leaning toward the f4i cause it's supposed to be more forgiving and a better starter bike. Thanks for the advice about gearing and stuff too, I'll keep that in mind for later (I wanna eventually do a track course) : )

Oh and by the way if you hear about any really good deals on 01 or 02 f4i's let me know :dthumb:

The F4i is not a starter bike. Neither is the R 6. The '04 engine on the F4i is the same as my RR. My RR has larger throttle bodies and a different fuel controller and map. The swingarm is different and the brakes on the RR are "beefier." Unless you are a professional roadracer, you won't or can't tell a difference between the two.

As someone new to motorcycles, you shouldn't start on either the R 6 or the F4i

I know the f4i isn't a starter bike, trust me I've read all the stuff on starter bikes. I was just saying that it's a "better" starter bike than an r6 since I've read a lot of stuff saying it's more forgiving to new riders. I know that neither is a good starter bike I'm just set on getting one of them. I know I need to take it easy and "survive" the learning process and I'm not saying I won't drop it... probably will... which is why I don't care if it's scratched up already when I buy it, but trust me when I say I understand the kind of respect I have to have for that bike and the power it offers. Sorry if I come off as another one of those arrogant starters who refuses to get a ninja 250 or an sv650:sorry:... I'm just confident I'll be ok:idk:

You are one of those arrogant, foolish starters that is not going to listen to anyone. So, go ahead and re-invent the wheel. You are going to have to scrape your own knees. Good Luck!

I had a 03 f4i as my first bike. I really like it and it was really comfortable.
I sold it to a friend a got a 03 ZX6rr, I personally liked it better.
It wasn't as comfortable but had better acceleration and handling.
The F4I was a better starter bike in my opinion.

Now I have a 06 gsxr1000. Definitely wouldn't have worked as a starter bike.

Here's my 2 cents for you. After 20 years of riding dirt bikes for fun, I finally got a street bike. Friends steered me from what I thought i wanted (gsxr) to the more "sensible" F4i. I got a 2002 F4i, and it is everything I wanted in a street bike. It is easy to ride and very "forgiving" of my mistakes. I echo the warnings of not biting off more than you can chew. My dirt bike experience, even though a different type of riding, still gave me a lot of skills that I can use on the street. Also that MSF course was worth the $100.

My F4i is plenty fast, I've had it for 6 months and while I have had it up to 140 mph, it's power still amazes me sometimes. The higher I rev it, the more it wants to give, with all due respect to the liter bikes, this 600 certainly has a ton of power. I also rode a friend's 2007 GSXR 750 on the open road. It was certainly a fun bike, with more power than my F4i, great handling, very sporty looking, etc. I really enjoyed riding it, for the 40 miles that I did. But the riding position was not as comfortable as my F4i. The gixxer was a fun bike to ride, but I would rather have my F4i. I assume the R6 would be similar, fun to ride shorter distances but maybe not as comfortable in the long run. (In case you haven't done the math, my 20 years on a dirt bike means that I am older than most sport bike riders and I chose comfort over some other aspects).

IF you get a 600 cc bike, as you seem set to, take everyone's advice and respect it. It will be more than you need or should have at first, but with care and some luck you might not lay it down as you expect. An F4i will definitely give you the thrill you are looking for.

you dont know if they are going to drop the bike just because they are just starting. ive been riding for 2 years with 20k under my belt and have yet to drop my bike.
just get a nice starter bike (600) and ride. take your time and enjoy. learn as you go, bikes will never go out of style. so theres no rush on stunting and all that. wear your gear and ride baby ride:dthumb:
positive energy guys:cheers:
