NEW YORK (AP) -- A hospital and the New York Rangers' hockey team doctor Thursday were ordered to pay $450,000 to a dance director and choreographer who had surgery on the wrong knee.
Douglas Hall, 43, went to St. Vincent's Hospital in November 2001 for arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. Despite marking the right knee with an "X," Dr. Andrew Feldman operated on the left knee.
Feldman, described on St. Vincent's Web site as the head team physician for the Rangers, admitted an error occurred; the parties disagreed on how it happened. Hall's lawyer, Richard Gurfein, said Feldman claims the operating room was set up for a left knee operation.
The defense is asking for a reduction or dismissal of the jury award; an appeal will depend on the judge's decision on the matter, the defendants' lawyer Paul Callan said.
Hall, a dancer for 20 years before becoming a choreographer, is now studying drama production at Rutgers University, Gurfein said.

If the Dr. can't see a Red X and doesn't check this stuff ahead of time, what kind of surgery does he perform?

And she probably has a hospital bill for 20K for this privilege. Duh, even my 3 year old knows X marks the spot. The arrogance of this ba$tard...the operating room was set up for the wrong knee...wtf? he can't ask!! what ever happened to measure twice cut once??
That is nutz.
Guess it's a good thing that he wasn't working on those too....
I wish they would have worked on my wrong knee... Then I would have had them both worked on....

Maybe the doctor looked at it and said, "oh, they put an X on that knee so that I WON'T work on it." Haven't you ever seen an "X" mean "no", or "stay away"? ;)

:withstupi There's no excuse....any operation, no matter how minor or major should be double and triple checked before any cutting.... :screwy:

Scalpels are scary. I'm putting off my knee surgery as long as I can. For the past couple of years mine hasn't given me anywhere near as many problems. Crap like this is just plain scary though. I think if/when I have to have it done I will make sure there is a GOOD friend in the OR with me!

Torn lateral meniscus. They're going to take out the detached chunks.

Yikes!! That really sucks! As long as it makes your knee feel better and corrects the problem, then that's all that matters. :)

That does suck...I had surgery on my arm December 6th and I am just getting ready to go back to work next week. Good luck on a speedy recovery (at least in time for riding season).
