Drag racing motorcycles thread.........

since a few threads have gone to dragracing, might as well start one just for it...who has gone to the track, what kind of times and mainly what was your 60 foot time..... bike magazines always posts the 1/4 mile times of all the new motorcycles in them..but getting those numbers isnt as easy as it seem, as people that have taken their bikes to the track have found out.... the big difference in dragracing to roadracing, is in dragracing you only have one shot at winning..screw up and youve lost...in roadracing if you mess up a turn, you can make it up somewhere..(unless its the last turn of the race :sob: ) in dragracing its a one shot deal and you better get it right.. launching a bike is the hardest part, cutting a good light takes practice also...the rest of the run is easy, anyone can put the throttle to the stops and run it through the gears.... the 60 foot time on your slip , tells you how well you have launched your bike... heres my imput on 60' times. 2.2 secs.....better go take up roadracing (j/k) 2.0 -2.2....not good, youd be lucky to get a busa in the 10's with that time 1.8-1.9..getting there, at least your in the ballpark 1.7-1.8 very good, u should be running the times your bike is listed at.. under 1.7 people pay you to ride their bikes in big races  so whos gone to the strip, like it hate it...lets hear it.

I've never been, but I would like to go watch it, the power those bikes make is amazing...but not something I would ever be intrested in doing myself, seems too limited...from what I see you need 3 things to drag... 1 - ballz 2 - money 3 - good timing seems to me, as long as you get a good launch and can hold on, you are doing OK...i think it would be boring to get all set up to go out for a day and only launch a few times and be done...but who knows, maybe once you experiance a 1/4 mile in like 9 seconds, you get hooked... Mike - i live my life a quarter mile at a time

Mike - i live my life a quarter mile at a time almost every track has a run what ya brung during the week..all its gonna cost ya is the entrance fee..usually 15.00-25.00...wear your leathers, gloves helmets etc and try it out....its fun, takes no balls just practice to do it right , and who knows...you might even like it. the only down side is, if you have a big litre bike and do track days, your gonna have to do a burn out at the dragstrip, to get some grip on the tires and you really dont want a flat spot on your roadracing tires...but if you have a 750 and below, you usually can get away without doing a burnout since your main problem isnt traction but controlling the front end reaching for the sky on these bikes....

or how about 9 second snow mobiles with little wheels on the front ski's....that has got to be the most insane thing i ever saw...theres quite a few at new england dragway in new hampshire...the wheels on the ski's in front look like they came off my office chair  ....lots of 10 and 11 second snowmobiles...pretty intense ride but good for all year riding i guess.....

when i was a kid we used to go and watch sled races all the time on a lake nearby. I havn't been in a few years but they still race out there every winter. unbelievable how fast some of thos things are! Whether it's little wheels or skis on the front they don't do much anyway. You pretty much steer with body english

Jack, i see what you mean by the little wheels now. Never seen them run on dry land, but i know on ice the skis barely touch the ice the whole run. Thats what i meant by steering with body english. Do they do that too on land? or do the tend to stay on the ground more? I'll have to keep my eye open this summer for a couple dry land races and go check one out.

I took my Kat 600 to the 1/8 mile track here. Don't have any of the time slips, though. Think best was about 8.3 (it's a Kat, what did you expect?) but have no idea on 60' time.

on my 1989 gsxr1100 with a stock swingarm, pipe and jetkit and stock motor my best was a 10.3 @131mph with a 1.65 60' time..i use to eat zx11's at the time....not too many gsxr1100's could do that at the track..... i freshened the motor with 1186 pistons and head work and added a nos kit, and the 4" added to the swingarm. i ran a 9.8 @152mph the bike was a bear to launch and had a tough time with traction and only ran a 1.8 60'...if i could get it to hook up and a better 60' time, it should have ran low 9 seconds, but unfortunatly i blew the motor before i got more runs in at the dragstrip, bike was great on the street though...... was funny that i had a lot of money put into the motor and i needed to use the nos to beat a stock busa with a good rider at the drags...if the rider didnt know what he was doing, i could beat him on the motor alone..but i always had the juice armed :tt:

, but unfortunatly i blew the motor before i got more runs in at the dragstrip, bike was great on the street though......: This is probably why I don't run my bike at the strip. Every wednesday night in the summer, $30 will get you as many runs as you can at Bandimere 1/4 mile just outside Denver. Here's (if I did the attachment right) an old Kawasaki that ran 9.86 at 141MPH at 6,000 feet elevation. For more info on Kawasaki triples www.purplehazeracing.com.

Hey Dog!!! Have you seen your doctor lately? Why the Hel! would you move from Mass. to Maine in the winter?? I moved here in 1999 and just recently moved back to Mass. The kids didn't adjust well (13 and 7). So we move back up here for them. Now I get to travel for work.

Back to drag racing, how bad is drag racing on the clutch? I raced a Porsche today from a stop light. I usually don't, but this guy was asking for it. It was one of those new 911's, and he tailgated me all the way from a hospital. the road opened up to four lanes and he was next to me at the light. Reving it up. At stoplights, I always let out the clutch quickly and then open up the throttle. But this time I reved it to about 4,500 and held my hydraulic clutch right at the friction point. Holy Crapola. Some tire spin, some sideways, but abundant forward motion. The clutch was all the way out, but I kept my hand there because the needle was swinging toward redline. After I hit second I glanced in the mirror and saw him turn off. I swear I was shaking afterward. I never realized how fast my bike could accelerate. I would like to hit the dragstrip this summer, but will my clutch hold up? I have 40K on the original.

I would like to hit the dragstrip this summer, but will my clutch hold up? I have 40K on the original. slipping the clutch is the key to fast launches from a standstill, and it will fry your clutch..i go thru a lot of clutches but i always got them for cost or a little over costs at several shops in the area so cost wasnt a factor at all.. the key is to prevent wheel spin and not let the engine bog at all, and the only way to do it is to slide the clutch..smaller bikes 750/600 you have to rev them pretty high, i use to launch around 6/7,000 rpm and slide the clutch and not let the revs drop below 6,000rpm...larger bikes you can get away with 4/5,000rpm and slide it there.... these are starting rpms, as soon as the clutch is let out your rolling the gas to the stops as fast as possilbe, sliding the clutch till your at the stops...takes a little practice but its worth it imo... If you want to take it easy on your clutch at the dragstrip, just bring the revs to 4k and let it out quickly, then on the gas. the bike will bog a little but youll be fine...
