Buying first bike

I'm looking to buy my first bike. I have been looking at 600's and i have a few questions. First of all what is a good amount of miles for a bike. I live in michigan so most bikes around here are under 10k miles. But ive found a few with 15k. I probably wont put a lot of miles on it but i dont want a bike that needs a lot of maintanace. Also, there is a bike shop near me that sells rebuilt bikes. They all have rebuilt titles but they have been rebuilt and all have custom paint jobs. They look tight but im not sure about buying a bike with a salvage title. What are your opinions.

personnaly i would stay away from a salvaged titled bike, too many nice bikes out there to settle for that....

Well, it all depends on your level of mechanical ability. If you don't want to ever touch the bike other than to ride it, then go buy a brand new one with a warranty. They'll usually finance you with a really low rate to get you into a new bike. I would have done this, but I can't stand the thought of being $8000 in debt. I guess I'm a tightwad. I had a 2000 CBR 600 f4 with 24000 miles on it, never once gave me a problem. If the bike has been maintained, it will go for a while. Current bike is a 99 R6 with about 12000 miles. I'm not really afraid of tearing the bike apart so I would find a good used 600 with 10-12k on it. Even if nothing breaks, I would be changing parts to customize the bike anyhow. I wouldn't get a salvaged bike. If the frame is tweaked, only a few experts can fix it accurately. But get a good used bike. Maintenance has to be done on a new or used bike. It's just better to do it yourself on an older one. For the older air-cooled bikes, 50k would be high mileage, but for the newer water-cooled bikes 100k is high mileage. If you are concerned, and you should be, have an expert evaluate the engine compression and frame. Everything else can be fixed, replaced or improved.

Ya miles are no problem on most bikes. I had an F3 with 23,000 miles on it no problems .And then i put 18,000 on a superhawk again no problems . Look at the general condition of the bike . If the chain is original And looks like new chances are the bike is well taken care of . Both my chains were and they had some miles on them . The reason i say that is its a pain if someone is doin that they should be doin oil changes and such . Also ask for records of oil changes , I change my oil & filter every 2000 mi. Keep all my records to show my work , sounds anal but when you go to sell the buyer knows what he's gittin. And you will get a better price . :twfrox:
