I have been wanting a bike for a long time now. and well I think this spring I will finaly bite the bullet and get one. I have never driven any kind of motorcycle in my life. Well except once I drove an 80 cc dirt bike for about 15 minutes. lol
Anyways I want something that looks fast. But don't want anything fast yet. Just soemthing that will go about 130 KM/hr will be fine. I was looking at the suzuki GS500F. Looks cool..and well I hope it's not too powerful. I kinda wana take the responsable way out. lol I wanted a nice 600. But after readding on this site am now beggining to think the 500 will be more then enought for now. At least until I get the hang of it.
Anybody know of any pros/cons of the GS500F?? input would really be appriciated. By the way I'm 5'10" and 150 lbs. If that helps.
Thanx all.
zx636r 03-19-2005, 10:18 PM if i was getting anything less than a 600 that is the exact bike i would get. go for it very good choice, and good to know you are starting out the right way. and make sure you get gear.
jeeps84 03-19-2005, 10:20 PM Pros; Great all-around bike! :dthumb:

Yeah that is one of the best starter bikes around. Good pick, you must very educated because you picked a Suzuki.
so i take ot you all don;t think it has too much power?
and as for gear that is another thing I had a Q for...what should be on the NEED list and the NICE to have list.
Obviously the helmet is a need list item. but what about foot wear? and body stuff.
I want to use the bike for a daily driver weather permiting for work and back. I live about 30 km from work. so about a 20 minute drive. I have a tendency of wanting to go fast in my S-10 i go above 200 km/hr regularly. that why I want to start with a small bike that way I won't kill myself becasue i know I will want to put it to the limits. lol yes i know very imature. but at least I'm not denying it. :S
zx636r 03-19-2005, 10:32 PM http://www.newenough.com and http://www.speedwerks.com ask speedwerks on here b4 buying he is also a member of TWF
you need good gloves, a riding jacket, and boots. i ride in jeans but a nice pair of riding pants would be nice.
twisty 03-19-2005, 10:32 PM I rank gear like this
1.Helmet
2.Quality Jacket
3.Gloves
4.Boots(Your ankles are the weakest and most likley thing to be hurt alongside you wrist in a wreck)

jeeps84 03-19-2005, 10:38 PM All sorts of gear to buy.
Leather is best!
Joe Rocket ballistic is great for all around ridding.
Do a search for gear on this site. there are some great threads on this subject.
zx636r 03-19-2005, 10:45 PM if your younger you probably going to want eiterh joe rocket or Icon gear. and speedwerks has the best deals on icon gear and thats a fact.
JK_DILLA 03-19-2005, 10:48 PM 1.Helmet
2.Quality Jacket
3.Gloves
4.Boots(Your ankles are the weakest and most likley thing to be hurt alongside you wrist in a wreck)
avec moi.
As for commuting in all weather, a balaclava (sp) is usefull. I cant afford a full rainproof motorcycle suit so i use a XXL Stearns rain suit and put it over my usual gear for the wet. Plus it rolls up small to fit in a pack.
and if i havent already- WELCOME!
thanx all....i think this is the first forum where nobody made fun of me for wanting to start on a smaller power plant. most other site you get flamed for not wanting the R6 or a CBR 600..
I think I'm gona like it here.
Thank you all for your opinions. I still got a few months before final decision comes. but I will keep reading this site for all kinds of usefule info.

zx636r 03-19-2005, 10:52 PM oh oh i got one, frame sliders. get them as soon as you get the bike, better yet have them put them on or try and get them thrown in with the purchase of the bike, vortex or sato.

Gas Man 03-19-2005, 11:58 PM A6... WELCOME!! :twfrox:
Read thru all the beginner's corner threads.... it will have anything and everything you never thought you needed to know... plus lots of threads on this very topic...
And NO that GS500 WILL NOT be too much power....
2FURYUS 03-21-2005, 04:45 PM A6, Welcome to TWF.... your making the right choice with the GS500. :dthumb:
Stick with Suzuki and you'll always be happy, cause you'll be riding the best!
Seriously though that GS500 is an excellent starter bike.
GSXR1000DJ 03-21-2005, 04:54 PM Welcomne to TWF A6.
f4ilapper 03-21-2005, 06:37 PM Welcome A6.
Here is another :2cents: you might consider a Ninja 500R it is also a good starter bike. Not to much on the horsepower, but enough to not get blown off the highway comuting. Also consider a used bike to start with, but get someone with a lot of experience to look at it before buying. It is not a question of if you will drop it is when, it happens to all of us. The Ninja is a very light and thin bike to get used to the balancing act on.
Here is a link to a EX500/Ninja 500R specific forum that also has a lot of beginner info.

The info on TWF is the best I've found. :twfrox:
Gas Man 03-21-2005, 09:29 PM yep I use to own one... very good bikes... but for a guy his sized I would suggest something bigger... 600 - 750 would be good!!

You sure. Hes only 150lbs. The 500 should be good for him. Yes he'll grow out of it quick, but atleast he can learn on it a bit first and the following season move up to the next class. And we know he likes the look of the GS500F.
Guideon72 03-21-2005, 11:43 PM Welcome to TWF!! :) That should be a great bike as everyone's said already, If you want to look in on something a "little" bigger as Gas suggested I would highly recommend the SV(still Suzuki so you can't go wrong there  )
I just started riding recently also and I wound up going with the SV vs the GS because every place I looked I found nothing but great things about the SVs and being able to stay interested with it for a long time. They're relatively easy to handle and so far (about 3 weeks) this thing's been VERY easy on me in the realms of handling and power. It's got enough to get moving quickly but it doesn't try to run away from you when you hit a bump or something else silly like that...which you WILL be doing at first...trust me
Even during the breakin' period (for you AND the bike) it is enough to stay in traffic on the big slabs and not get run over but you're not gonna go rocketing up the road without some seriously consicous effort either. (6th gear, 5500rpm = @75mph. Since the breakin is supposed to range up TO 5500, that's not too shabby. For the record, I'm 5'10 and @190lbs.
That's just my :2cents:, it sounds like you've got your head wrapped around the concept fairly well and as long as you stick with an "easy rider" :bonk: to start, you're gonna have fun!
Oh yeah, and I didn't see this yet so let me be the first in THIS thread...TAKE the MSF Basic Rider Course if you haven't already... :luck:
Gas Man 03-22-2005, 07:21 AM DJ, no I'm not too sure... I got my noobies mixed up.... thought this one was the bigger guy... But I think Gid, has the right idea. The SV650s would work well. And would allow for more growth...plus it won't kill the pocketbook!
