636, I could pay it off right now. I got 15K for getting out of the Army but I want to save some of it for bills and stuff. They took 5K out for taxes so I have to wait like two months to get that back so I may drop that entire amount on it. Nice birthday present to myself (25 on May 17th), huh?

So basically, this asks how old is your bike. If you have a handle on your finances, a new bike should be paid off within three years. If the bank still owned my 1990 or worse my 1979, I would be in a heap of a financial bind.

If you can buy a new bike outright, you're better off. Make payments to your own bank account with interest, see how much better that feels :D Buying a used bike for a whole lot less is an even better idea if you can't afford to pay cash for a new one. I personally would never (and have never) finance a motorcycle. I also didn't buy my first new motorcycle until 1998 (I was ... 27, started riding at 18). I'm one of those save-up-and-buy people though. I'm really not into having debt. - Roach

Smartest way to be! :dthumb: Not the American way but smart! :pat:  Nah the smartest thing is to get a 0% or really low like 1.5% interest rate and make the payments. Figure if you make 2% on your savings account and pay your loan payments at 1.5%...you are making a .5% profit on your cash versus if you paid cash on it. I love taking advantage of the system on those 0% interest rate dillies for like 18 months, that places offer for purchases like PC's, furniture, big electronic things.... Pay it off before the 18 months and YOU WON!

I love taking advantage of the system on those 0% interest rate dillies for like 18 months, that places offer for purchases like PC's, furniture, big electronic things.... Pay it off before the 18 months and YOU WON! Unless of course, you lose your job and can't make the payments. Or, something happens (emergency - medical, house, etc) and you're in the same boat. Plus, you should look at your bank statement. Right now even a money-market checking account with a high min balance is giving you 1%. It's been that way for the last 5 years. It sucks. the market has stagnated since the dot-com bust. There are only a couple things in this world that I see as needing to owe someone money for (for the above reasons) ... a motorcycle isn't one of them. Unless it was a primary mode of transportation (i.e. don't own a car) and I simply could not afford to buy one outright. I know this is VERY un-American (our debt problems are pretty much the worst in the world), but there was a point in my life that I damn near didn't have a roof over my head ... makes you become VERY cautious about what you spend money on, and to whom you owe it. - Roach

Paid $3400 for my '98 GSX-R600. It is one of the greatest feelings in the world to have something you saved up for, and plunked down the cash & took it home. No payments means no nervousness. If I scratch it, ding it, break it ( done all those already :loser: ), I don't care. If I had a new bike, the first time a mirror hit the corner of my storage room door, I'd a cried. Hopefully when I step up to a newer bike, I'll have saved the money to pay for that outright. It may not be the Amercian way, but it's the way most Americans are proud of.
