Do you ride with earplugs?

Is your helmet noisy? Do you use them on long rides? Short rides?

JK_DILLA

i wear them all day at work and wear them on the ride home. If i remember to bring some home i wear them on most rides. For long rides its a MUST. My hearing is leaving me anyway so im trying to keep it as long as possible. Plus i can hear myself sing better.

I don't wear them but maybe I should for the longer rides!

For around town where the engine and speed varies I don't. For long trips where the wind and engine are constantly droning, I use foam ear plugs.

I put one of these Windjammers on my helmet and it knocked about 75% of the noise down. I couldn't believe the difference and it isn't hot either... Check it out... http://www.proline-sports.co.uk/acatalog/UK_Wind_jammer_21.html :dthumb:

What about MP3 Players? a lot of my friends wear them. That's what I'm thinkin' of XRD. I'm gonna go buy an iPod. I was thinking about the XM Radio by Delphi but the battery only lasts for 5hrs max. The iPod lasts for 18+ and if you get the 30gig one, you can like almost across the country on shuffle and not hear the same song twice!

I dropped some $$ on these combination earplug/earphones for my Ipod. They are really great, as they reduce the fatigue from listening to the wind noise and I can play the volume way down on the music so that I really just get background tunes. I can't hear speech much with them in, but I can still hear my engine and the road noise of cars coming up and around me. If I'm going to be riding with others I will generally wear some looser fitting earplugs to reduce the windnoise but allow me to hear them talk if necessary at lights/stopsigns/etc.

See, I have a iPod Mini and I fit like 3days worth of songs on it. But now I run into a problem. When I put the lid on, the plugs come out of my ears and it takes me like 5-10minutes of sitting there figiting with them to get them back in. Anyone have any ideas on different plugs that won't come out when putting the lid on? (currently using the ones that come with the iPod)

Get a chatter box and install their speakers and just plumb the IPod into that..then you have both...

I don't wear any ear plugs, but I have tried riding with the MP3 player on the interstate, I just don't like not being able to hear certain things like getting pulled over by a cop. I need to invest in a new helmet because mine is so noisy and becoming a P.O.S.

not the plugs I had in, I had to pull over on I75 to take them off, I felt like my ears were bleeding. I think it was just the type of ear phones I had on.

I cannot ride my bike without ear plugs. The trick however is getting the foam plugs to fit correctly. Too many people just roll 'em up and just mash 'em in their ears, not sealing properly. To get them to fit, you have to moisten them (I just use a little spit), and then with your opposing hand, you have to pull tthe top of our ear up while you insert the plug. Try it, and you'll really see how well they work. Cheers.

I got a few more people in WOS to try the ear plugs this week at the GAP and some liked it, others didn't. Rev pointed out that it makes you less sleepy if riding for long peroids of time. I wondered about that, but tried it one day. And he was right. By taking out of the drowning of wind noise it really makes you able to concentrate more on the riding. I am becoming truely hooked on the ear plugs.

It's well known in the aviation industry that constant exposure to loud noise is a phenomena that causes fatigue. That's why when I fly my plane, I use a mil-spec active noise reduction (ANR) communication headset. It would definitely not be a good idea for pilots to be falling asleep at the controls! And with my exhaust as loud as it is (by nature of it's design - Two Brothers), I would have to be an freakin' idiot to ride without earplugs. I can't afford for my hearing to be damaged. I also wear ear muffs when I mow the lawn, weedwhack, use the gas blower or powersaw (anything electrical that makes a lot of noise). I cringe whenever I see people doing these things without hearing protection. They can fix your eyes, but they can't fix your ears (yet). A small amount of protection goes a long way!

Once again, with regards to the fitment of the plugs, I feel that a lot of people why don't like them may be saying that because they don't understand how to insert them properly. Therfore, they may not be receiving the full benefit from them. I see too many people crudely roll them up and mash them into their ears. That's not the way to do it.

I started riding with my MP3 player when I go on longer (2 hour or more) rides. I do not turn them on in town though so I can still hear sirens and other things associated with city riding. My HJC CL-14 is so much louder than my Shoei that I can barely hear the music if I wear the HJC.

I'd like to see someone develop an ANR system for motorcycle helmets. I'd be very interested in that.

Chatter box speakers were easily heard at a 5 volume with the HJC. But I am now a fan of the ear plugs! Best .99 spent at the Dragon.

JK, how did you moisten them? Did you soak them under running water? If so, that would feel pretty uncomfortable. If you did find the bravery and decide to moisten them with a little bit of spit, it will quickly dry up once in your ears, and they won't feel uncomfortable. Anyways, it's only your own spit, and a tiny amount of that. BTW, I'm not suggesting you draw up a phlegmy lugey!!!!! :puke: The reason why they're really quiet now is because they're actually NOW properly doing their job! Cheers!

Sime

You're welcome. I'm thinking that the surface tension of the spit must be that it doesn't seep into the plug, rather it sits on top. The water must be penetrating the plug. Humor me and try the spit technique just once. Roll the plug up first and then put a little bit of spit on there. See how that works. Interested to know the comparison.

They only time I wear them, is on long rides...other then that I try to keep my ears clear for the sounds around me...police, firetrucks, ambulances...ect! Having your ears plugged can delay reacting to situations.... Now my husband wears them everytime he races....he wouldnt race without them

Gas Man

I wouldn't say it delays anything... the sound is going to go thru the ear plug just as fast... it travels at the speed of SOUND! It just eliminates X # of db's....
