Undocumented workers who are taking steps toward citizenship can now apply for housing assistance.

Tuesday night, in a vote of 15-4, a majority of the Madison Common Council signed off on a resolution allowing undocumented workers to apply for low-interest housing loans through the city Community Development Block Grant programs.

One stipulation, workers must have an individual tax identification number (ITIN), meaning they pay federal taxes, to apply for a loan.

Opponents say city leaders shouldn't condone illegal activity, by supporting those who don't follow immigration laws.

But supporters say the idea is supported by HUD, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. They also say the issue isn't about immigration, it's about providing an equal opportunity for those who live and work in Madison.

Although the resolution passed, the debate isn't over.

State Senator Glenn Grothman says he intends to add an amendment to Senate Bill 43, which is aimed at stopping the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) from following similar guidelines.

The amendment would counteract Madison's resolution.

Illegal immigrants have been making their way into US for years and seem to only become a "major" issue post 9-11. It has gotten to the point that English is becoming a second language but I get more heated at those that take advantage of benefits (federal/state/city) that target certain demographics deemed truly needy.

The difference is that legal immigrants get paid at least min wage and pay taxes. Illegal immigrants enter the country illegally, are paid under the table, and do not pay taxes.

He made more money than most of the people who worked for me, because he deserved it! A 20 year old man who supported a family of 4 on his income alone, I respect that and find it hard to believe that anyone else wouldnt. The will to survive makes people do illegal things but does not make them bad people. If your family is starving and there is no work for you, what would you do? Yes we do need these kind of hard working family loving people! The government just needs to make it easier for them to become legal citizens so they can pay into the system like the rest of us.

It's easy to take a liberal stand up North, move to Texas or Arizona and see if your view changes.

Go to Pittsburgh, Texas where the school district is in the red b/c of the migrant's children from the local poultry factory. They can't afford to buy new books, kids are in portable buildings b/c the mass population growth hasn't been met by an influx of tax money.

Go to Houston Texas, where there are certain parts of the city where people of all races are scared to drive b/c undocumented aliens drive the streets with no insurance and no identification, and if you are hit there is no recourse b/c there is no way to track them. Also, some take advantage of their inablility to be tracked and victimize people, giving false names etc.

Ask someone who has had their ID stolen by an illegal using their Social Security number to procure credit.

Illegal Aliens cost the state of AZ 1 billion dollars last year in provided health care.

Having lived in TX for 23 years, I have seen the immediate problem where the magnitude of the problem is at it's greatest. It's easy to have a sympathetic view when you aren't taxed with seeing the issues first hand.

I actually hire some from time to time do work for me.
I pay them the same thing I would pay anybody else.

Thanks Phoenix, I'm very touchy on that subject especially cause my dad and I (well, I used to) work in construction on the Eastend of Long Island, NY (we worked on like Billy Joels, Mariah Carey and others houses) and now they (illegals) are like flooding that area doing the work for less money than what my dad and I got paid. I used to make like $1000.00 cash a week or more, dad makes like $1500.00 a week. And then I live down in El Paso, Texas and see all the rest of them flooding the borders. It reminds me of "The Day After Tomorrow" movie, only reversed! Not like I honestly think that the U.S. citizens will ever have to flood Mexico in my lifetime!

Here in Arizona they attempted to pass a measure that would have banned the translation of government documents into languages other than English except those needed for international trade and tourism and to protect the public's health and safety. It also would have required that public meetings be conducted in English. It would not have applied to private businesses.

It was vetoed by our govenor stating "under Senate Bill 1167, English is required as the official language, but funds are not available to help non-English speakers to learn to read, write or speak English. Under these circumstances, making English the only language for official action is contradictory at best"

I would sure LOVE to see the rush of funds/teachers available in Mexico to teach me Spanish if I decided to move down there. :skep:

An anglo (cracka) is at a restaurant. He is trying to order and the waitress, who is from another country and has to repeat the order multiple times. HE gets frustrated and gripes at her.

The waitress proceeds to walk off and he turns to another anglo at a different table and says, "Man you come to our country you need to speak the language, know what I mean." It pans across the restaurant to other patrons who have taken notice and the other anglo defiantly says, "No sir, I don't."

Well, I think our schools have a hard enough time teaching proficient English in most cases. However, I was stunned that some non profit organization had enough money to make some stupid commercial, obviously geared at anglos.

I have seen the commercial.....Now when you say "anglo (cracka)" are you referring to someone that is white? I have never heard of "anglo" before.

Yeah white, I have only seen it once and it aired here in Tallahassee, it was a nationally run commercial, not a local production - but i havent seen it since.

"Anglo" is a term that is usually used to refer to an "Anglosaxon", I believe that they commonly use this term to refer to the "Anglo saxon" persons of like Britain, Germany and Ireland. If my history comes to me correctly...

I personally still enjoy referring to myself as a Honky, but my professor who has her Ph.D. in Linguistics/Language informed me that Anglo is the now given terminology.

no point, the us doesnt have a official language, why start now.
That's what I hate to hear! I think they seriously messed up by not passing a federal law making english the #1 language of the country and the only nationaly recognizable language. Squash all this BS right NOW! That's what I think should happen

We have an official language law in Quebec its call '' bill 101'', it has been made to protect the existence of our '' national '' language; french. It oblige all enterprise to put informations of their products in french and all immigrants ( that doesn't speak french or english ) to send their kid to french public school, because we have english publics school but the provincial official language is french, immigrants that have english for their original language ( UK citizens, I think US citizens too ) are aloud to go to english public scools. All the provincial laws are edited and writen in french first, the law is made in a way that the immigrants have to take french as their main language if they want to function in Quebec. Because we know that there is a world outside Quebec, most quebecers learn, to be practical or for general knowledge, 1 or more additionnal languages and their 1rst choice for 2nd language is mostly english. All that to say that if you feel that your '' mother '' language in danger of loosing is importance and that your culture will suffer if english is not protected by appropriated laws, you should do something like Quebec did. How? start informing your politician an start a movement about it.my :2cents: .
