Sprint Corp. will offer programming from Sirius Satellite Radio later this summer, expanding the radio programs offered on Sprint phones.
The deal, announced this morning, is one of several reports today concerning the Overland Park telecommunications company.
Barring changes, Sprint will slowly phase out the Nextel trade name after Sprint and Nextel Communications merge later this summer, The Charlotte Observer reported today. NASCAR’s Nextel Cup series will become the Sprint Cup beginning in the 2007 season, the newspaper reported.
And analysts at Friedman Billings Ramsey today projected that U.S. wireless companies will add more new customers during the second quarter than previously expected.
Sprint declined to comment on both the announcement with Sirius and the newspaper’s report on the post-merger name of the company.
Sirius officials, however, said the company cut a deal with Sprint to offer an undisclosed number of Sirius satellite radio channels on Sprint phones.
Sprint is considering adding channels ranging from rock and hip-hop to jazz and Broadway music, Sirius said in the announcement.
The deal is the first between a satellite radio company and a wireless company. Unlike traditional Sirius broadcasts, the music will be transmitted over Sprint’s wireless network, not by satellite.
Further details of the new service, including pricing and whether shock jock Howard Stern’s program will be included in the Sprint service, were not disclosed.
