How do you hold on?

I hear much debate about this... When you're riding on back how do you hold on to your sig other? Do you just hold on to him for dear life? Do you use your legs? Do you use the gas tank to stop from sliding forward? Use grab handles? What's up... * My wife doesn't hold onto me at all. She uses her legs to hold herself from falling off when accelaerating. Then uses her hands on the gas tank to stop herself from sliding forward into me on braking. * = not to say that you don't ride your own bike just asking the majority of passenger riders on the site.

Gasman, you are very lucky to have a wife who knows what to do on a bike! I have given girls & guys a ride on three separate occasions. After the 3rd time, I swore to myself that I would never ever give another person a rider ever on my 636. First of all, everyone holds onto me when I'm accelerating/braking and that didn't fare so well for me since the 636 sports a downward sloped front seat. Needless to say, I was almost certain of a nut crushing experiences upon every stop :bash: I vow to never ever have to put up with this crap while I'm on my 636 so my rear cowl stays on the bike at all time now.

I have had that as well but not with the wife. She's a keeper for sure. She figured that out all on her own... she really rides really well on the bike. She knows all about leaning and everything...

I somewhat hold on to him when I'm on the back...but most of the time I normally balance myself with my hands on the tank when he tops and like your wife I use my legs to keep myself in place....I knew 15yrs of gymnastics would eventually come in handy LOL muslces in my legs finally came in handy for something....... :dthumb:

I bought a wide web belt, actually a military pistol belt, and put handles on it...and the Bee has a grab bar on the rear...

"THE WIFE" Holds on to a belt loop or the side handles of the bike. She rides well. A little upright in the tighter corners but expect she will get more used to it. I just press harder to compensate for her right now. She sits still though, she dont disrupt the handle at all.

My wife doesn't hold onto me at all. She uses her legs to hold herself from falling off when accelaerating. Then uses her hands on the gas tank to stop herself from sliding forward into me on braking. When I used to ride passenger, this is exactly what I would do. Luckily, I'm tall, and have long arms, so it was easy to reach around the pilot and brace myself on the tank without clinking helmets, or putting pressure on him when we had to brake hard. But I found this the easiest position for general riding as well.... there's more wind-drag if the passenger is sitting upright/holding onto handles on the seat -- when the passenger leans on the tank, you move more as a single unit, and it's easier to sense when the pilot is leaning, etc... (so the passenger can then mimic these movements).

My Wife does a great job as a passenger. I want allow just anybody on the back in the first place. She uses her legs arms and hands to hold on and back. I think allot of it has to do with we are so familiar with each other from all the years of ridding together. She use her hands on the tank to hold herself off while braking. other than that Ill have to get her to explain it.

How could she reach around you and push on the tank ?? you are very small ? she has very long arms ?

How could she reach around you and push on the tank ?? you are very small ? she has very long arms ? Pretty much butt back in the seat, leaning into the pilot, reach around, and brace the palms flat on the sides/inner area of the tank (like right above pilot's thighs). Unless the pilot is VERY "round" and the passenger is very tiny/short arms, it's not hard to do. And also... it helps if the passenger has some non-slip gloves (suede works well).... Gel-pads in the palms of the gloves helps absorb some of the vibration as well (leaning on the tank like that for long rides can make your hands go numb after a bit).

I don't ride on the back so i don't know. I am the one in front at all times.

Most riding jackets have loops on your waist. If the passenger is confortable enough and is paying attention and watching where you are going they will know what to do. Hold on the straps on your jacket. Push all the weight down on the pegs and when coming to a stop push on the tank without leaning on the rider.

i just hate it when the passenger head butts me when starting and stopping. it's my pet peeve. same here, hate it when the passenger keeps taping the helmet from stops and starts, my daughter is a great passenger, she keeps her hands on my waist lightly and i guess she holds on using her legs cause i never even know shes back there

As a passenger, I put my arms around and put my fingers on the tank. This allows me to control my body from jarring into the person in control. It also allows you to be more one with the rider, because you are forced to lean into them (which keeps those passengers who want to try to ride themselves by leaning for the drive from doing so :)). I hate haveing a passenger, therefore my rear seat cowl stays on at all times. I have had a few passengers on the back. My ex g/f use to push against the gas tank to keep from slamming into me when ever I braked before a turn or comming to a stop. She held onto the tank more than me. I remember she pissed me off one time, so I decided to scare the ***** out of her...I popped up a wheelie with her on the back unexpectedly. I didn't keep it up very long but it would have been so easy to do. She was screaming her head off, and she really didn't want to ride with me anymore. LOL that's what I was hopeing for.

That's one way to get a person's attn. :rofl3: As for the few times I've been a passenger, I've held onto the rider's waist. I never tried to push on the tank. Not sure if my arms are long enough...doesn't matter anymore. To prevent the banging helmet scenario I was told u should anticipate a stop--pay attn. I leaned bk a little (helps if u have good abs, if not dep on the ride time u will by the end) while pushing down on the pegs like Diva said, then slowly allowed myself to sit bk up. It worked!! :2cents:

I always have my hands with gloves touching the tank. I use the hands "inside" one another with the back of my hands touching the tank most of the time, until he is starting to stop, then both hands palms down on the tank. I also use my thighs to grip. I also lean with him and the bike. The rule is to never lean farther than he does. This really helps to keep the bike balanced. Having my own bike is great, but I miss riding as a passanger. I have to beg for a ride on the 1000 .

last time someone rode with me it was pretty ugly. my ex. g/f was riding with me. the first time she rode with me. she had rode on a bike before so she knew what she was doing. she keep her hands on the tank and held herself up with her legs. but she rode to good. i forgot she was on the damn bike. we had been out riding almost all day long. no problems. pulled into my hood and just popped a nice wheelie like always when i turn into my hood. well she wasnt ready for it. and fell off the bike onto her ass. needless to say she dumped my arse after that. so nowadays the seat cowl is on the gsxr.

Occasionally I go on the back of boyfs bike and mainly hold on with my thighs. I rest my hands around his waist incase I need to grip on suddenly. He likes to suddenly pull off and see if I'll fall off the back, I swear!! :yesnod: If we stop suddenly I push against his lower back, poor thing, but if I can reach the tank I press against that.

Its allot like riding by your self as for leaning. I thinks its mostly being so familiar with ridding behind him for so long. For some reason I trust him  and that's very important.

When I used to ride with the bf, now ex bf, I would just squeeze my legs when he'd accelerate and for support, I'd place my hands on the tank, with my fingers spread out. He would tell me that he couldn't even feel me back there. I'd just let him do all the work. When he wanted to pull a wheelie, he'd tap me on the leg to let me know, I'd squeeze my legs harder and place one hand on his waist and the I'd slip the other into the tank bra (if it was on) and lean my body into him. :)

When I first started riding I used to hold on to him, but the more you ride the more you have to depend on not moving him. So I started holding on to the gas tank, it looks like I'm holding on to him but I'm not. I use my legs for everything else. Now that I have my own bike, I always insist on driving myself.... so :dthumb: I think thats the best way to go! Have a great day everyone! And happy holidays!

Not disturbing him is probably the biggest issue of all. I've never had a passenger so I don't know first hand but, its his biggest complaint when he carries me or any passenger.
