Chatterbox modding

I just bought a Chatterbox set-up, the GMRS version. I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to mod the radio to open up more frequencies? Any Hams in here will know exactly what I'm talking about. I would like to be able to talk to other folks and most folks seem to have the FRS versions. Also would like to be able to talk with people in cars if I am travelling with them, once again,, most people have the cheaper FRS radios.

What the 15 channels and 38 talk groups isn't enough? :screwy:

Would that involve some type of firmware hack or are we talking soldering chips?

you could do it but there is not much reason.. also if you want to talk to people in cars I have done this by using a motorola radio in the car on the same channel and it works seemlessly..

Yeah cause a Chatterbox is nothing more than another Motorola radio!

If I'm reading the manual right, no,,, 15 channels are not enough as they are not FRS freqs. Now, if I'm missing something and there are a few FRS freqs thrown in there somewhere, good,, I won't need any more. I just wanted to be able to talk with other people and other people have FRS radios 90% of the time. Anyone know for sure?

I was hoping it would be something simple like breaking a solder bridge or making a solder bridge as in the case of alot of amature radios.

From my understanding. You have to program the channels for the frequency you want. If not a stock channel. I know I have talked with Motorola radios and even been annoyed by them for others chatting on my channel.

Yeah I'm not sure...you're over my skills. I'm with Jeeps... I have been annoyed by many handheld radios on my freq... especially damn kids!

Just found out that the first few channels are FRS. No need for modding, no more problemo. Thanks to everyone who replied. :dthumb:

Just don't get pizzed over the VOX. Its a PITA to get even close to working right.

I had no plans to use the VOX, I've tried VOX on other stuff in the past. It's always a bit of a pain, I can imagine what it's like when wind noise is added to the fray.
