Well, I know its grossly delayed, but I finally booked my MSF course! I got into the class this weekend. I got lucky as she said a student dropped out the other day. I am really looking forward to takinng the course, as I will finally acquire my license if I pass (and a new ID, thats another story). That being said, one of the items they list as optional is my own helmet. My question is, did you guys BYOH (Bring your own helmets) to your MSF course, or just use the ones they provide? I am thinking I dont want to trash my nice helmet if I dont have to. What did you guys do?

Bring your own helmet! The ones they provide are quite smelly. They've been used by who knows how many people, and they get a 1/2 second spritz of some antifungal to "clean" them. You won't mess up your nice helmet, anyway.

If you mess up your helmet on those little bikes they teach you on. Atleast thats how it was when I took it, you need to quit riding all together. The class I was in, we only had one person fail. That was because she wouldn't go fast enough. She never got to point of picking up her feet, she just wanted to walk everywhere she went I guess.

You only get up to about 20 mph if the other students aren't chickens like they were in my class. The teachers of my class kept yelling at two girls and a guy for going way too slow. I talked to one of the teachers two weeks later when I went showed her my bike and she said that was the most students she had to fail out of one class since she has been doing it. Back to speed, I barely got enough out of my throttle to use 2nd much less the shift to 3rd. If you manage to drop a bike in the MSF course, my suggestion would be not to continue learning how to ride a bike. I highly doubt you will be in any position to mess up your helmet unless you drop it while walking to the bike.

yea laying the msf bike down is not a concern. I already have a few months of riding my 6R under my belt. I know its not much, but at least its something. I just figured if they are giving you a helmet to wear, might as well wear it. But if its anything like batting cages, where the helmets are all nasty, then I will take your guys' advice; Ill just bring my own helmet.

I remember my MSF coarse. But the real question is... are you refering to the beginers or advanced? I skipped over the beginers and went straight to the advanced class. Much much better in my POV!

I really liked the advance course. They teach you better stopping, not using your legs in corners, counter steering, rear brake and clutch control, and other tips in avoiding bad situations.

I remember my MSF course.. Quite funny weekend too.. No one went down or anything.. I just had fun with it all.. The instructors actually asked me to slow down because I was making the other students uncomfortable.. When they said do 25 and stop at the line, I think I was going about 35 or something, but I still actually came to a stop quicker than almost everyone else.. .. I got pretty bored with most of the stuff but I learned a lot too.. Coming from a dirtbike countersteering and some other things were somewhat new to me.. I would like to take the advanced course when I get my newly acquired bike (GasMan's former ZX-9R), but I don't know if I want to spend the money or get a new helmet and something better for my legs.. I'm thinking I'll just practice everything on my own in the nice parking lot for a park by my house, when their aren't any cars there of course.. I'm thinking for learning how to control this new bike of mine i'll do some basic maneuvers.. Evassive maneuvers , full out braking, rear tire control (how sensetive the rear brake is to locking up), and any other suggestions?? I'm thinking of what I can use to best mark areas, since I don't have any big red cones..

I did... at the time it was my EX500... the instructor even used my bike. He said he really loved the small sportbikes cause they were easy to move around even for sportbikes standards...

The basic(beginers). Im fairly new to riding still, so the basic one seemed best on paper. I figured they would teach me some stuff that I dont even know about yet. If the school im giong to is good, I plan to take my advanced course there too. But for now, I just want some education and my M license :D

Well I passed the written :dthumb: only missed 2 of 50 (still pisses me off, but oh well) Today was riding. The difference between a honda Nighthawk 250cc and My ZX6R is astounding, and really puts things in perspective for me, which is good. When we finished and I got back on my own bike, It took me a few blocks to get used to it again. We did your basic drills like clutch play, throttle and turning drills. Tomorrow is riding awareness stuff like emergency manuvers etc. Mostly old women in my class. Couple sportbike guys in my class, and the instructor has a 'busa, so we talked a bunch. I dont think 1 is gonna make it though. She laid down a honda shadow twice!!! once while just standing there. She just bought a $24,000 custom chopper with a 90ci engine!!! I hope she catches on quick... well after tomorrow, I get my cert of completion and then finally my license!!! Woo-hoo!!! I might change insuracne agents too, because I can add my MSF course discount!

I missed 3 out of 20 points on riding evaluation. Apparently the run they tested me on during the 2nd of 4 evaluation's was the one that my throttle control was not proper, so I missed 3 points in one shot. All my other runs on that evaluation were perfect. They even said so. Just the one that they tested was the bad run. Oh well no sweat. Other than that, perfect :D going to DMV and probably calling insurance companies for a better rate. We will see. Now I can finally get my license!!! No more "summer" bike to do list!

congrats!! so did everyone pass the class, or did that one lady never catch on and fail or what? That lady (a very nice lady BTW), did not show up today. The instructor told us that they didnt feel like she had enough skill to advance. They said they will give it 1 more try and if she fails then, she should probably find a new hobby. Now she has a $40,000 bike and cant ride it (I thought it was 24K but they told me different). :yikes: Then some guys sister in law died on Friday night and left this morning, but I think he gets to reschedule the riding portion. If anybody is in the Phoenix Area and wants a MSF school to go to, go to ride smart. They were awesome and very learned. Best of all they were cool people. Everyone is invited back to stop in and say hi, and BS, etc. The best part of the class was it was small. They usually have 2 groups of 11, but we were only 7. I was slated for group 2, but they put me in group 1 to balance out the students. It was great because the 1 on 1 was more in depth and had more time to practice. i have been trying to go to one of those, but they are always full!!!.... but i am going to look up one for the spring because i have like five buddies and a gf and her friend that are all lookin in to it too so i cant just show up and hope to get like 7 peaopl in most schools offer a group discount. Ride Smart offers group discounts, and I was going to go with some friends, but they dont have bikes yet. They didnt care. They have no clue what the "itch to ride" is like yet. Also drewpy, take jeeps' advice. Call and get on "the list". I dont think they take your money until day one of class. I gave them a credit card number over the phone, but I physically had to hand them my card and sign the receipt the night of. They will indeed call you with an open spot. Thank you all for your support and kind words. this forum has taught me so much. I have searched the archives the past day for suggestions on tire pressure, mpg (yes, I ran out of gas....again!!! ask and I will tell you :D), etc and as always, extremely helpful. Thank you for letting me be apart of this awesome group of riders, you guys (and gals) are great. :twfrox: :twfrox: :twfrox: :twfrox: :twfrox: :twfrox: :twfrox: :twfrox: :twfrox: :twfrox:

What type of bike was it? some custom chopper. It was black with oxblood red stripes. IT looked cool, but it also looked like she was in over her head. I will try and find a pic that closely resembles it lookes like this except the handlebars are more traditional http://www.chopperpro.com/catalog/08a.jpg

State Farm doesn't give a discount for passing MSF, but for me, they were still way cheaper than anyone else I called for a quote.

Yeah Snad, depending on the manufacture/builder...it would be pricey. I can't imagine somebody trying to learn on something like that... a sportster or something else smaller would have been better.
