I just heard the cost of a vavle job on a Duc!

I was talking to a Duc 749S owner and I asked him about the cost of maintenance. I've always heard that Ducati maintenance, tune ups and valve jobs were expensive so I was thinking maybe $400-500 tops. He told me that some dealers charges as much as $1200!!! Is that true?!? Holy Schyzza!! How often do you have to get a vavle job done on the Ducs? I don't think I want to spend that much on maintenance for any motorcycle. I may have to cross off this beautiful bike if it is the case. Ride ON!!!

As with any bike, cost of maintenance depends on the hours required to do the job. A valve job on a Monster 620 is significantly cheaper than one on a 996.

Every 6,000 mi. Adjusting the valves ain't as easy as replacing a Ducati clutch, but it's not impossible. If I had a Duc, I would do the valves myself. Actually, it's better because you can take your time and perform the adjustment when the valves are cold. Every maintenance thing on a bike is easy to do if you are confident, have the service manual, and the right tools.

Agree'd......But If I owned a Duc I would learn to do them myself. Just like i do on my rice bikes. No crap...cause those Duc's need them all the time!!

$750 at my local Doc shop for a 998. With $200 worth of tools and a manual. Any confident wrencher could do it. :2cents:

Laura I have a two-valve 944 (ST2)... the actual adjustment process for 4 valves is about 1 1/2 hrs, including shims, winkler caps, gaskets, replacing cam belts (every 6 k without fail or else) and buttoning her up...and another 1-1 1/2 hr to replace plastics. The rest of the day is spent doing all the other stuff on the PM list: Removing and replacing the stator locknut and washer, retorquing with locktite, retorquing the clutch and basket, checking motormounts, brakes, wheel bearings, clutch and brake master and slave cylinders.....if you don't do this stuff on a Duc, your gonna "PAY" for it later, either to a shop or in poor performance and breakdowns. If you do do it at the regular intervals, they are as reliable as any other bike. Average cost in parts every 6K is about 60-70 bucks...oil, filters, gaskets, plugs belts and shims....4 valve heads are a little more. If you pay a shop to do it, it's pretty much a full day to a day and a half job (if they do EVERYTHING they are supposed to)...that's where all the money comes in.
