First for me, Christmas present given back

Came back to office today after two weeks off to collect mail. Find on my desk gift certificate gave one of secretaries for Christmas with yellow sticky saying FxxK you:scratch: This lady has worked for me for over ten years never had a problem with her. Few months ago while heading to gym, she told me she wants to get back into shape maybe join gym. She's 39 and could lose maybe 50 LBS. So I purchased her six month gift certificate to chain gym located near her job and home. Guess she took present wrong way:crazy: Will be interesting to see what she has to tell me when I see her this week:wink:

You don't have any explaining to do or apologies to make...You gave her a GIFT you thought she might like, she didn't...End of it. She can't sue you for over a simple gift, regardless of what she thinks you are implying...unless you have a history of teasing or remarking about her weight...It's not like you gave her a box of toys from Rick's XXX Toy box and the key to a motel room...If you start making apologies and excuses, it will look like you have done something wrong. Don't speak of it, and don't make the same mistake again...never buy her a present again for anything.

Yea..i really dont think this could be considered a harsh joke to his secretary whereas she could contact HR and make a complaint..... reason being... I dont know about your area....but here in NY a years membership runs between 400-800 depending on where you go. I usually pay around 550. Sooo..that would mean to me that you probably laid down close to 200 bucks or more for her gift certificate. I dont that classifies as a joke about her weight. A joke to tell her she is fat would be giving her one of those 1 day or week passes that dont cost anything. Who would spend a couple hundred to make fun of someone??? she has no case if you fired her. I mean hell, i would love a gym membership esp if i was out of shape..some of the reasons people never get into shape is because they dont have the time or the extra 500 bucks laying around to get a membership. You got her one close to home and work and you laid out the $$ lady gives back a gift and says **** you......DISRESPECTFUL!!!!!!!!! so i stand by my last post.

as a woman, i think that was an incredibly poor choice of a gift. it would be the same as giving a bald man a hairpiece because he remarked about how he wishes he still had hair. no matter what intentions were behind it, it is only gonna remind her of her insecurities. it was an incredibly insensitive thing to do. whatever happened to just giving a christmas bonus? $$ is one size fit all, and is also a lot less insulting. perhaps this will teach jetski to put a little more thought into things in the future, regardless of how much $$ he is out. hey, maybe he can use it for himself now.

Sorry...Fat people do not have protection under EEOC...many companies are now requiring weight guidelines in order to qualify for health insurance, some companies are paying for health club memberships to give people a chance to qualify...It is like the companies refusing to keep smokers...Fat people and smokers are in the same lot now...no protection...

i dont see a need to defend this woman at all. If she didnt like it she could have in an upset but jokingly manner said to him "what do you think i am fat?" and he could have said i bought it because you mentioned you wanted one.... but to leave it on his desk with a note that says **** you????? thats downright childish and should never be tolerated in an office environment. she could have handled that much better. obviously she doesnt really care about her job or else she never would have added in the **** you part!!!! fire her ass. talk about ethics....who at 39 has the right to act like a 16 year old girl with boy troubles....especially to their boss.

I have to disagree with you. The woman commented that she was thinking about getting a gym membership. She didn't JUST say, "I wish I was still in shape". If a guy commented that he wished he "had" a hairpiece, then a hairpiece (or gift certificate for one) would not be inappropriate. If he only said, "I wish I still had hair", then yes, the gift would possibly be inappropriate. I actually think it was a kind gift and the woman took it the wrong way. After all, she said that she was thinking about getting a membership. We simply cannot win with women. If we don't read your minds, then you get mad at us. If we attempt to read your minds like you want us to and we come to the wrong conclusion, you get mad at us. And in my opinion, money is an inappropriate gift if it's not requested because (to me) it says, "I don't really care enough about you to try to figure out what you want". I think jetski was trying to give the woman a gift that he thought she wanted because of her comment. It was not insensitive or rude in my opinion.

Just to keep the peace, write her an apology letter- include a pair of high heels. Tell her if she wears them in the right spot, her fat ass might actually strike oil. And if she does you want 50% of the profits. :luck: By the way, I think you should get credit for an awesome gift- not only was it expensive but since she had mentioned it before- it's actually quite thoughtful on your part... If she can't be mature enough to admit she's fat as hell- it's her problem. I agree- never buy her another gift. period.

you see, this is the difference in thinking between men and women. i do commend jetski for showing he at least listens to her when she talks. most men don't even do that much. but lets face it boys, if i say i wish i had a better vacuum cleaner, that is not saying i want one for christmas or my birthday. i'd be peeved if i did get one. i mean, how impersonal. he should have just bought her a gift certificate to an all you can eat restaurant, that would have sent the same message. just not a good gift. and to all that think she was immature in how she handled it, what do you think calling her "fat ass" is? that's some real immature attitudes, if you ask me. but then again, boys do develop mentally slower than girls, so what do i expect.

Itgirl: lets just get this straight....Jetski is NOT her boyfriend or husband. She is lucky to receive ANY gift from her boss...esp an expensive membership. He doesnt have to worry about making her feel like a princess....HE IS HER BOSS> NOT HER ADMIRER. she is obviously EXTREMELY immature and disrespectful. No guy should have to worry about what to get his/her secretary and have to worry about her not feeling flattered. get real.... if i was her boss....i would have her **** packed and ready to give her a kick in the ass the day she returned to work. Too bad if shes having a bad day or literally that insecure....have her whine and bitch to her husband....obviously she cant handle herself in a professional environment.

I know I'm chiming in a little late on this subject, but no woman, not even myself @ 105 lbs. likes to hear or see that she needs to lose weight. One thing about women that's annoying (besides everything!) is that we will make a comment like "I would really like to lose 10 lbs and get back into the gym". Basically, (most) women want you, the guy, to come back with "Aw heck no, you don't need to lose weight." "You look great just the way you are." It's the "Do I look fat in this?" dilemma. DON'T ANSWER THE QUESTION. It's a no win situation. No matter what you say, even if it's "No, honey, you look great!" She'll come back with "Your just saying that to make me feel better?!" So the fact that you bought this woman a VERY NICE gift (I might add) and she returned it with a "f*ck you" is now something you need to chalk up as a lesson learned. Now as for the ****ty comment she made to you, well there is a way to go about it with out making both of you look like asses, or at least getting your ass sued, is by telling her that she made the comment, you bought her this gift, sorry she didn't appreciate it, but the f*ck you comment was uncalled for and not what you expected out of an employee that you have worked with for 10 years and "had" so much respect for. ("had" being the operative word here) She'll pick up on the "had" part and I can guarantee that it'll make her feel like ****. Which it should. Then say that you apologize if you in any way offended her. And leave it at that. If she try's to bring it up again, tell her you'd rather not discuss it further.

However, you should at least wait 4 years to say that answer

:cursin: if it's a bonus they shouldn't tax it.:2cents: They have to, it's considered part of your wages. It's like tips, you have to be taxed for tips as well. My division in TVA does this little raffle every year after the fiscal year where you can win dvd recorders, digi cams, ipods, tools, and other $300 range presents. We even get taxed on those if we win one. Uncle Sam will take money from you anyway possible.

You think that is bad, Uncle Sam taxed my reenlistment bonus 24%. $15,000 bonus and all I received was a little over $10,000.:cursin: Sucks, doesn't it? But at least you GOT a reenlistment bonus. I didn't even get an enlistment bonus, let-alone a reenlistment bonus. All I ever got was normal pay, except for the 3 months that I was in Kuwait when I got hostile fire pay and also got paid tax free (for 5 months). You should have gone to Kuwait or Iraq during the time you were scheduled to reenlist and your bonus would have been tax-free then. This is a good point for all military guys to remember. If you're in a tax-free zone just one day of a month, then your pay for that entire month is free, including reenlistment bonuses (unless they've changed the rules since I got out 4 years ago). So, if at all possible, try to reenlist during that time. As stated above, I got tax free pay for 5 months while I was in Kuwait for just over 3 months. We got there a couple days prior to the end of a month, and came back a couple days into the next month. Guys who reenlisted during the first month through that 5th month all got their bonuses tax-free.
