Well I think it is about time... I currently have been with my company for 4 yrs. In that time I have gotten a 6% raise :disapp: with about 20% more workload. Sure things are ez going around here. But this job lacks the respect that my qualifications deserve. I currently have an offer on the table for a bigger check, around the same benefits, much more responsibley. I have never been a MGR but this job would include being in charge for large group of software & network engineers, destop support techs, and helpdesk personel. I will be working more hours, 10 a day but being in a challenging setting will make this exciting. But for some odd reason i cant bring myself to do it. I cant leave! WHY! I complain to Pippi everyday how I hate working for a Boss that lacks normal skills of a person in that postion. I want to leave but Im scared of the unknown, the possiblitly of failing, and leaving the EZ road that goes nowhere... What would you do?

Have you asked your current company for another raise yet? The bigger pay check is nice. Plus you'll be working with engineers and ****. I'll bet they know how to do their job right. The unknown is scary. Do feel that you can do the job? 10 hour days suck though. You do have a chance to be the boss rather than working for a dick. What's Pippi telling you?

Is it possible to let someone with some sway know about the other offer? Perhaps some back-bending might be done in order to keep you... Hard to say these days, depends on the company, but a lot wont do much to keep employess anymore because they know someone out there is willing to do the job for even less money.. Sometimes ya just gotta close your eyes and jump. Being secure but miserable is not a trade off you can live with for very long. But then again happiness with your job but no security or future sucks too! What ever ya decide, good luck on it bro!

If your financialy set to make the change...I'd do it. I like to change jobs every 2yrs  I just get board way too easily to remain with the same company & work with the same people for longer than 2yrs; regardless of how great the company & people are. Ill be hitting the 2yr mark with my current company close to the end of this year & Im already planning a switch  Chage is good...it keeps us on our toes..keeps the mind sharp

Twisty, I can relate to where you are at now. I got laid off my last job in Cincinnati, Ohio about a year ago, and I didn't think it would take me 6 months to find a job but it did. I got offered a nice job in my same audio visual field but a lot more technical. However I had to take a huge risk moving from kentucky to Pennsylvania. Not knowing anyone and even if the job would work out in 6 months and then I spent all this damn money relocating for nothing. I decided to make the move and the job has worked out great minus a few things. I was told I would have a signigicant pay raise in 6 months if everything on my review was successful. Well everything was successful however I never got that six month pay raise. :wtf: I have been here 9 months and the president pulls me in his office last week and gave me a salary increase of 3 1/2%. Well that's BS! That is nothing major to me and it's more like a cost of living adjustment for 2006. I got paid last friday and now I am making $53.00 less net than I was when I started! :wtf: I am so pissed off right now. I guess I entered into a different tax bracket. I am going to talk to my boss about the pay this week because I simply can't live off this S**t. I have had many other postions where I was the boss such as Director of audio visual services, sales manager, and supervisor. Those postions were great however when the guys under you don't do what they are expected to do...there is always that bigger boss above you that rains down on your @ss which doesn't make anything easier. I'd say I have busted my @ss to get to where I am today, some good decisions, some bad. You really won't know until you take that chance. I would say this was an excellent move for me minus a few things, i think things will smooth out for the better with in time though. In all take that risk Twisty if you can.

The biggest thing to ask is will your new job let you off for race weekends??? :) Seriously, though. We all know racing can cut into work time, and sometimes new jobs are not keen on you taking time off. Something like that might outweight the money at the new job. I have been in your situation...and it's not easy. But you have to have faith in yourself. Fear of the unknown definitely sucks, but sometimes what is on the other side is definitely cool and was worth taking a chance for! The only thing you really need to decide is if you want to be a manager. I can tell you from experience that some people enjoy being a manager, others hate it! If you want to live the "easy" and "comfortable" life, stay where you are...it doesn't sound too bad. If you want to be adventurous and see what it's like to be in charge of a bunch of people, try the new job. The only limits are what you put on yourself. You can do it! Take a chance and go for it! :) Just my opinion ;) Laura

everything happens for a reason....theres always something better out there for everyone! Im currently looking for another job as well....I went on two interviews last week...its just tough for me right now because I still have 1 more semester left at college so I cant really work full time yet...I want to finish in May...not go part time so I can accept a fulltime position. Its tough this time of year Ive found....EVERYONE wants me to come on full-time but I cant right now.... Hopefully I will hear from these two companies I interviewed with sometime this week and work something out. WORK SUCKS in any event!!! **BTW...GO FOR IT!!!! If you are comtemplating it at all...it means you are ready to leave we you are!!! othewise you wouldnt have made a thread about it!!! Think about it...would you rather be someone who takes what is out there to your benefit...or would you rather just stay under the radar and always be told what to do! Personally, Id rather think for myself and keep myself and others busy on my account. If they call...I'll probably DEFINITELY take the position (assistant project manager of an HVAC company) my age kinda limits me in certain aspects since im only going to be 22. SO ill take the assistant position and work my ass off so Ill bump up soon enough..... cmon man....quit and be in the same boat as me!!!!!! Lets go after the bigger prize!!!

Move on, no reason to stay at dead end job. Business world, only people really getting ahead risk takers ;) Sort of like racing, what kind of racer would you be without taking any risks:scratch:

WHAT???? I'm not making fun, but I'm shocked to hear you say that you're scared of the unknown. You ride a motorcycle on the track, at very high speeds, risking injury, but you're not afraid of that, right? So why be afraid of this? In order to get anywhere, you have to take chances. Sure, there is always the possibility of failure, but if you have the skills, then take the shot. Just make sure you do your research and you go into it fully prepared. If you have a plan, you'll do fine. The key is to plan well and to always have a backup plan. I have faith in ya, now just put a little faith into yourself. Attack the job the way you attack the track. Do you ever go onto a new track and ride at 100% on the first lap? No, you take a few laps to learn the track. Life is the same way. The "laps" are the equivalent to doing the necessary research. Do you get better on the track if you never push yourself? No, you would just stagnate at the same level. Again, life is the same. If you don't push yourself, you won't become any better at it. So do your research and if the job is good and the benefits are good, then take the next step and push yourself to become better.

Twisty I was in a similar position not to long ago. I was constantly complaining about how I should be making more money. I knew what I needed to do and was just scared to do it. Then a opportunity slapped me in the face. I jumped in head first. (scared as hell) That's been over two years now and I doing smooth breast strokes now. It sounds like you have the luxury of planning your big change so :luck: with life changing choices.

Stay at your current job... You do not want to enter the IT field. I've been in IT for over 10 years. When a company wants to cut cost, IT is the first to go. I've worked and been laid off, outsourced, been a consultant about every other year. March of this year, I will be outsourced. The good thing is, I will remain with the company working for the outsourcing company. My job position: Network Admin with the responsibility of an IT Director with the pay of a help desk technician. Jumping jobs to see better pay and more challenges also brings the possibility of being laid off/outsourced/downsized. I've seen my salary drop from $80k year to half of that today. Tell your boss that you want to renegotiate your contract. Make sure that you specify your job performance and work load increase. -a|ex

Well Alex...he's in the IT field... Twisty, first off feel free to call me if you want to get into it some more. You still got me #. Anyway, Laura brings up a important thought about the racing time off. As long as that over rules the desire to get a new job with more $$$. I too am currently/right now, going thru that. Heck to make it worse, I'm living & working 1.5-2hrs from home. Having to learn a new job and work with new people. I was really nervous, even though I knew I could do the job. But its the unknown! In the end, you know that Pippi will stand behind you and that helps alot. It is hard to find women like her and my wife. A woman that will say do what you want and makes you happy. That has got to help. This post could get real long... like some others. But like I said, feel free to give me a call.

I went through this kinda thing about 2 months ago. Felt like the job I was in was going nowhere, and I'd be stuck as a junior designer, and junior pay forever if I stayed with my current company. I wasn't really looking for another job, but one night I got a call from another company, said they were looking for a designer and I had the job if I wanted (identical job, just different company). Pretty good, considering I had never even sent a resume to them. They were just going on word of mouth around the industry. Backstory over, I went to my current boss to give my notice. He wasn't too happy, and really stressed that he didn't want to lose me. Said he pay me whatever they were going to, plus $2/hr. Kinda hard to turn that down, so I stayed. For a raise of $6/hr. I'm still behind the going rate in this area for fixture designers, but it's a start. And atleast something I can live on. Me personally, I would never get into a management position, unless I was the Head honcho. I've done it once, at a previous job, and fill in here from time to time. It's the only time that **** flows not only downhill, but uphill as well. If you think you'd enjoy this other job, then I say go for it. But if you think you'd only be moderatly happier in this other position, then I'd try and use it as a leverage point with your current employer. If they say goodbye, then at least you have something to fall back on. If they make a counter offer, then take it. But keep your nose clean for a while so they don't start thinking whether or not they made the right choice in keeping you. Exactly what I'm doing right now.

If you are interested into going into management then you should take the plunge. You have to understand though, with that move, comes not only added responsibility in terms of workload but now you have to play the "game". You will now have to play the game of politics, everyday. You will most likely become less involved with the more "hands on" day-to-day and assume a role of delegating. You will be required to meet much higher expectations as well. I work for an Tier 1 automotive supplier as a Development Engineer and I see the things I mentioned regularly. I have no desire to go into management (at least not at this company). Good luck in whatever you decide.

Having been there myself a few times I would definitely weigh both sides very carefully!! I am not ever a risk taker (unless I am on the road...but thats different...)but I made the jump from one whole career field to another and it seems that before I made the jump I was in a similar place...except I was the manager and didn't want to be, wasn't told when I got hired that I would be responsible for lots of other people and what they do...not enough money in the world for dealing with all the crap :bash: ...but I left it all behind for about the same money but new career and I LOVE it! It was one of the best things I ever did! Sometimes I miss a few things about what I used to do, but overall that risk was worth it! You'll do what you gotta do! :luck:

I would try talking to your current boss. I would tell him your situation and see what he thinks. If he thinks you are worth keeping around, you may get the pay increase you deserve. If he doesnt think so, then you always have another job. I would think that engineers and people like that don't need too much direction. They probably just get their assignment and run with it. Good luck though at whatever you choose. Hope everything works out for ya.:luck:
