hi everyone im brand spankin new to bike riding. and today hopefully i can get my permit so i can stop filling my god forsaken car tank. No offense, but I shudder whenever I hear this. And I've been hearing it a lot lately. You just don't hop on a motorcycle and ride, especially commuting in daily traffic. You can drive a car sloppily and won't get yourself killed. Maybe you'll get into a fender bender but the chances of you getting hurt is pretty slim. On a bike, there are no recourses, no airbags, no seat belt, no crumple zones. I hope that you'd be smart and patient enough to get the proper training, the proper riding apparels and the proper bike to start off. Or else you're going to end up as part of the statistics.

:iagree: with fnfalman.... if you enjoy motorcycling, and are enthusiastic and want to enjoy it as a sport or hobby. But I agree.... to just get a bike and hop into traffic is not the smartest thing to do. Definitely take the MSF program in your area, its a great investment in your safety. and Good luck!

maybe i should clarify my post after hearing from fnalman... i did not get out onto the road for a couple of weeks after I got my permit, stayed in my neighborhood and rode around, and did no riding out in major traffic till after the MSF, when I finally did get out on the road to ride it wsa at odd hours, very late or very early, when there werent alot of cars to watch out for... but good luck:dthumb:

well i went to the dmv and got my permit. Im not gunna do anything crazy like jump on it and hit the mean streets of buffalo or anything. I tried to sign up for some classes in my area but the next opening isnt until July which sucks cause im in western ny so there isnt much left to the riding season after that. However, my cuz will show me how to ride this weekend so i think ille be good. He also said that he would help me until i get my license so im good to go. my first bike is gunna be a ninja 650r i put a down deposit to hold it for me so when it comes in ille be on my way to learning.

Better be safe than sorry. I personally don't approve of the "Cousin Joe in the Parking Lot" method of instruction, but it's your life. There's a reason why people who go to a riding or driving school with a well thought out courses of instruction are better and safer riders and drivers than those receiving instructions on the side. Does your cousin know how to teach you on threshold braking? Does your cousin even know how to do low speed maneuvering? Or the correct way to take a turn? Anyway, that's my two cents. You're an adult and your cousin's an adult, so you do what you do. FYI, I have nearly twenty years of experience riding and for the last several years I've been averaging about 22,000-miles plus in Southern California traffic. My niece wanted to get into motorcycling and she wanted me to teach her. I love her so much that I made her wait two months to get into the MSF training instead of trying to teach her myself. But once again, that's just my two cents.

i will take the course when they have an open slot for me. In the mean time ill just putter around my neighborhood and learn the basics. Hopefully ill be able to find another class around here or I can ask the dealership where I can learn.
