Ural bikes?

has anyone got some experience with the Ural brand motorcycles from Russia? I ask because they've got a cool lookin Gear Up model that comes in camo patterns, and the Wolf model which is pretty cool. they seem to be pretty low powered for their displacment, but I'm curious about em anyways.

i dont know too much about ural, but i know theyve been making basically the same bike for a loooooooong time. Like a russian version of Royal Enfield. :2cents:

Urals are a copy of old BMW from WWII times. They have upgraded it just a bit but if I remember correctly hp is around 38-45. Yes it somewhat low but the bikes are incredible easy to service, very rugged and the best part and most fun part is that if you get the one with side car you can have it with 2 wheel drice. Side car and the bike rear wheel will have a common power. Performs in extreme conditions with a breeze. Ural factory almost closed but a few Russian Americans bought it out (if I got the story right) and reduced the production but increased the quality of the final products. The engine internal, tranny, brakes and paint has been improved especially after around 2001-2002 (if memory serves me right). Oh yeah, almost forgot. The sidecar is supossedly very comfortable for long trips

I saw those at the Bike show a while back! There was a dealer who had a ton of them. They were sweet, I really love the retro bikes like that... I wonder how reliable they are, also parts availability might be a biatch.... Thanks for the pics!!

As to reliability - you can fix those bikes with a screw driver and the hammer :wink:

I'll be waiting for the Wolf model to be released, then I'll go take a test drive of one. see how I feel about it. might be a nice cruising bike, to accompany my sportbike.

If you really want to see cheap transportation that has not been Americanized than get Dnepr. Its same as Ural but cheaper and most parts (I think) are still interchangable. Some Russian dude is bringing them into the country and selling them thru eBay. Just do a search for Dnepr on eBay. There is also a Chinese version which was copied from Russians which like I said before were copies of BMW. I cannot remember the name because its just doesn't roll off my tong plus I can't speak Chinese so it makes it hard to remember those names :scratch:

These are pretty cool too... do you think there would be a market over here from some of these up and coming chinese manufacturers? My dads doing business in China now, and hes going to start moving Scooters 50cc-250cc to South America, but he's always looking for new markets... also the scooters are being manufactured in a plant in China but owned by Honda. I've seen some pretty neat stuff being made pretty cheap over there.... let me know. I'll do some research on my own as well.... Thanks again for all the links Falc. I love these vintage bikes...

All I can say is resounding YES. You can actually find a very nice Chinese stuff. If I had enough $$$ I wouldn't hesitate one minute. Right now there is a ton of Chinese stuff is coming into US. Some of it is pure crap but some of it ain't bad at all. The only problem is that US buyer requires to have enough spare parts available to be shipped within 1 weeks. That means inventory of spares is a MUST. Unfortunately I do not have money to do that and I have to take baby steps and try to get my current business going. I would like to be as well know as some of the big online retailers but offer my personilized service. Hopefully with the help of guys like you I will be able too (Can't I dream?) but I have one rule that I will never change and will never forget. No matter how big you get, always remember times when you were small, reflect on it and try to offer as much personalized service as possible. That way customers will be your customers for life. The reason I started this business is because I saw an opportunity for someone like me who is willing to offer personalized service to the customers, offer brand names for less without delving into dealership mentality :wbs: and at the same time offer rock bottom prices.

The camouflage Urals are actually being sold a lot more than the other paint jobs. The cool thing about the camo Ural is that the side car still has the machine gun mount.:dthumb: :drool: The downside is that the Ural is fairly expensive. I think that the whole arrangement is like $9000+. But then people are paying out of the wazoo for Harleys too, so...
