apfire26 05-29-2006, 03:06 PM I finally got enough guts to try to wheelie yesterday. I punched it in first gear while pulling away from a stop sign and the front end came up about a foot. I tried it a few more times and racked my goods on the tank pretty bad so I stoped.
Well....later on that day when I was riding with my buddy, I showed him my new "trick". He told me the front was getting about 2 ot 3 feet up before I puss out and drop it back down. I would't really call what I'm doing a wheelie yet, but its close. I only ride it about 20 feet or so and I'm still too much of a puss to try and find the balance point. I'm trying to get used to controlling a twist throttle and the bike has so much power I know I can easily loop it over. So for now, I'm just going to continue taking baby steps.
Even though I'm not riding them far, it is still a such a rush.:yesnod:
Gas Man 05-29-2006, 03:52 PM Feather the throttle...
Plus watch those hard landings... you will blow out your fork seals!
apfire26 05-29-2006, 04:43 PM Yeah, I know that throttle control is very important. I'm actually not going to try it anymore until I get my bike tuned up this week. My throttle actually sticks slightly so that could turn my day into a bad one real quick.
Gas Man 05-29-2006, 07:23 PM Yeah stunting or knee dragging isn't for a bike not running right.

03ki11er 05-30-2006, 11:36 AM What do you ride?
ScottSellersUNR 05-30-2006, 01:29 PM ive been riduijng 4 years and still dont ride em out over multiple gears. a good one to me is a 2nd gear power wheelie that just lifts slow enough to tach out and come down soft on the rev limiter...100 feet is as long as ill ever ride one till i have a stunt only bike to do em a lot slower.
apfire26 05-30-2006, 04:36 PM What do you ride?
I've got a 2000 CBR929rr. I just bought it on Friday. Theres some pics of it in the general disscusion/riding section.
take it slow man, take it slow. i haven't done a wheelie on my new bike cause i baby it too much but i used to ride a honda that i learned on.
don't even worry about the bp yet just get comfortable with the bike feeling light in the front and comin up on ya.
i was taught like this....just get up to a good rpm in 1st gear, somewhere around 40mph should work and just open the throttle. the bike should pop right up, practice full throttle fast and rolling off slowly so you can learn how to land soft, its not worth learning to go higher if you cant land it right, you will just hurt your bike and your..well lower region.
after you get comfortable with simple up and down 1st gear wheelies learn to pop the clutch at about 25ish mph in 1st gear, start really easy tho less gas at first and just a slight more each time untill you get a couple feet up, then as you get more comfortable go higher and higher but always be safe. after you get 1st gear down w/ clutch try 2nd gear but be extra careful..your going faster and thats more dangerous.
one last thing and remember this over anything else...always cover the brake incase you get to high and learn how to ease into the brake to help bring the front end down a little and dont slam on it, thats not good news. for your 1st gear wheelies u should have plenty of engine brake to bring you back down but practice covering the rear brake anyway.
good luck and be safe.
apfire26 06-23-2006, 08:39 PM I've been doing the 1st gear 40mph wheelie a lot here lately and I'm getting pretty comfortable with it, prolly riden them a couple hundred feet before redline. I was just ready to move onto clutching it up, but I got new tires and now it feels a little different. I've come down pretty hard on the last couple that I've tried so I'm not going to move to the next step quite yet. With my new Pilot powers I have a lot more grip and it also seems to pick up speed a little quicker.

ya gotta watch those 1st gear wheelies man! They come up so quick, and slam down so hard!
I do them occationally just messing around, but with the 1 litre bike it just really dangerous.
I tend to pop them up in 2nd about 65 mph and ride them out until I tap 110 mph.
I shifted gears on the SV 1st-3rd, however I haven't gotten good enough with the R1 to shift thru all those gears yet. One thing is the SV I popped the front up about 35 mph and would ride it out till about 80 mph, where the R1 I'm dealing with popping the front up at 65 and so far riding till 110...therefore I've got A LOT more wind resistance I'm fighting.
keep practicing and you'll get better.
F wheelies. That head shake during the landing kills me.

it doesn't always happen!
and thats what they make dampers for!

Stock dampers suck. I'll be geting one though. it doesn't mean i'll be doing wheelies though.

your's comes with one right?
if so, which I think it does...then you're lucky since it will be soooo cheap for you to upgrade to an aftermarket damper.

I don't have a stock one. Not like it matters. The stock ones suck.

yeah true, but the bikes that have a stock damper can be replaced with an aftermarked for 1/2 the price of a bike that does not have one.

Yeah, I've heard bad things about 1st gear wheelies but right now that's what I'm most comfortable with. I haven't tried second gear yet, though I've heard it's a little easier to control the throttle. I need a damn steering damper soon so I can really start riding the way I want.

apfire26 06-23-2006, 09:53 PM :withstupi
I always wear my helmet, jacket and boots. I also wear glove but they are cheap ones not even made for riding bikes. My Icons havn'et come in yet.

You should get some riding leathers, or some sort of riding pants too.
Gas Man 06-23-2006, 11:54 PM The only stock one I have seen worth a crap (besides the pasta brands) is the honda electric dampner...

y are you waiting to 65 to come up on the r1? in 2nd you should be able to power it up at 27mph then ride until 110 or 115. longer wheelie and comes up smoother at a lower rpm.
apfire26 07-08-2006, 09:09 PM Ive still been stuck in 1st gear. I can clutch them up and power them up but I can only ride them until redline. I've tried getting them up in second but I just can't do it. My 929 should have the power but I'm trying to clutch and power and nothing. I'm riding all day tomorrow so I'll prolly try bouncing then powering it up.
Back _Marker 07-08-2006, 11:54 PM easier with a slightly empty tank.
much easier with -1 front sprocket.
also easier with weight to the rear.

my buddy has a 929. he can ride a nice 1st sit down. 2nd don't come up good for him either. maybe it's the 929. lol. i never clutch. my r1 was awesome. i could bounce it up at 45mph real easy but it popped up. at the lower rpm, it came up easier. good luck and be safe. :2cents:

Both of those bike should do great wheelies with ease. You will find that both with knee dragging and wheelies... its 80% rider!
apfire26 07-14-2006, 04:13 PM I've got the 2nd gear stand ups with ease. I can ride them to about 90 mph.
I finally got the bounce and throttle timed right. I'm sarting to shift into third also, but I don't have those every try yet. I've also tried to bounce 3rd up, but I've only got it once and I'm still a little shaky at over 100mph.
I rode with a guy the other day that was bouncing his gsxr 750 up in 4th at over 100mph. Crazy!!!
may wanna reverse your shifter if u wanna try shifting while up. i read somewhere it makes it alot easier.
apfire26 07-14-2006, 05:06 PM may wanna reverse your shifter if u wanna try shifting while up. i read somewhere it makes it alot easier.
What do you mean by reverse it?
It is kinda hard to shift while standing up.
instead of raising the shifter, u press it down.
JK_DILLA 07-14-2006, 10:53 PM reverse pattern. i dont know if it works on the 929, but on others you flip the shift linkage to the opposite side. 1 up, 5 down.
it works for a 929. i have a friend who has his done.
GiXeRXtC 07-17-2006, 08:32 AM Flipping your shifter makes standups 10x easier when shifting the gears. I have an old road where I live where I've run it out all the way to 5th.(It's a 4 mile long straight away) :dthumb:
Secondly you should have no problem getting 'em up in 2nd with your 929. If you can't seem to get it up, slip th clutch slightly and I guarantee it will pop right up for you.
apfire26 09-24-2006, 08:08 PM I've been riding the 929 a lot, almost everyday. I've got a few tricks under my belt now. I also bought an FI 12 bar that I haven't put on yet and I'm planning on a cage pretty soon.
I'm gunna get some pics and a video up soon so keep an eye out. It won't be anything too spectacular, just a few good wheelies, stoppies, and some spreaders.
BravoX1 09-24-2006, 08:14 PM Glad to see your learning...in no time you'll be ruin bikes and youurself haha but heck its all

apfire26 09-24-2006, 08:22 PM Hopefully I don't "F" the bike up too bad just yet. But who knows, it could be tomorrow.
BravoX1 09-24-2006, 08:24 PM yea F it its only money bro.
2weelz 09-28-2006, 11:13 AM Yeah, I've had a few 1st gear nut smashers and some 2nd gear wheelie tank slap. Neither of those are very fun.
catch me if ya can 10-15-2006, 01:16 PM just remember when the tank touches ya chest it game on
ScottSellersUNR 10-17-2006, 11:09 PM on a naked bike... thats too high..... my 12 oclocks on the Z1000 leave me holding on for dear life cuz im so far back... but with more and more of em u get comfy... but a real upright bike makes Stoppies ROCK!

So what.......you just gave up after smashing yur nuts a few times.:idk:
When I fist learned I smashed mine too, but the thrill of getting the wheel off the ground for the first time well worth it.
