neebelung 06-05-2006, 07:57 AM We can argue the helmet debate until the cows come home, but if nothing else, just be careful out there please.
We lost a good friend, and fellow rider, yesterday.

New reports are conflicting -- some say he wasn't wearing his helmet, others say he was (and those he was riding with earlier in the day say he was as well).
What we know (from people who were with him shortly before the crash) is that he was on the normal Sunday afternoon ride with 4 others. They reached a gas station, and from there, the other 4 riders went one direction to head home, and he another. When they left him, he had his helmet on..... but a short time later, when the crash occured, he allegedly did not.
Another guy we know reported that he drove by shortly after the accident (not realizing at that time that he knew the rider), and it appeared CD's helmet was strapped to the back of the bike.
None of it makes any sense.... he was a VERY skilled rider -- probably one of the best we knew. And he was VERY adamant about safety... this was a man who would come out for the Saturday afternoon rides in full race leathers, and literally in 3 years, I've never once seen him ride without a helmet. Just recently he trailered a (mangled and bloddied) bike out to Bike Night to show the hazards of riding without gear.
Word is he doesn't really have any family...... :( But he leaves behind twin babies.
Just be careful out there everyone....
RIP, CD.

JLBusa 06-05-2006, 09:09 AM Saturday I was riding with My Base motorcycle club. We had two sport bikes go down :bash: . The Guy in the GSXR1000 locked up his back brake going into the turn :bash: , crossed over the white line hit the gravel and laid it down. The Guy on the R6 was to close to him going into the turn :bonk: , when the GSXR laid down in front of him; he clocked the handle bars trying to miss the bike and laid it down. Both bikes are at the dealers to getting fixed :bas: . Both riders had over 2 yrs sport bike experience. Both went to the Hosp. One got 6 stitches in his knee. So please everyone be SAFE out there, it's summer time and everyone wants to have some fun. I'll try and get a couple of pics on here later.
RIP, that is too sad!! guys, if you think its cool to not wear your helmet, think of things like this...and oh yeah, many girls (of those of us who ride) DONT think its cool to go gearless...his poor babies...
neebelung 06-05-2006, 11:02 AM We really don't know if he had his helmet on or not... we're still confused by that....

do you know if you will be able to find out?? maybe he was and it wasnt latched and came off or something...but if he was really into wearing his gear, that does sound fishy...was he close to his house where he had the accident?

I don't know that we'll ever learn the truth. I don't believe he was very close to home at all, and it would be unlike him to ride with it latched improperly. In the accident photos that have been published, you can see the helmet in the foreground..... I dunno... I really hope the truth comes out (but if it turns out he WASN'T wearing it, then it really leaves a lot of questions hanging in the air....).
neebelung 06-05-2006, 11:35 AM Show the pics.
Crud, I can only find the one now. It's tiny though.... but it looks like the helmet is in the foreground, just to the left of center.

but if he wasnt wearing it and it WAS locked down on the bike, why would it be sitting in the grass?? i dont think someone would unlock it from the wrecked bike:scratch: and from the article it sounds like only he went under, not the whole bike...i dont get it...
Hmmm. I wonder if the medical guys removed it at the scene.

I dunno... those little helmet hooks aren't THAT secure... if it were strapped to the bike, I could see where it could come off and tumble on impact. *shrug*

You would think it woulda tumbled more than that though. maybe someone brought it over and placed it there though. Who knows?
Gas Man 06-05-2006, 12:24 PM RIP Rider!
ScottSellersUNR 06-05-2006, 12:52 PM Condolences. From the pic it wouyld seem as they took off the helmet to try and help him. if it were tied to the back of the bike youd expect it to still be there. Always sucks when someone dies. I've been lucky enough that i've never had a friend hurt or killed on a bike.. and i hope to God that it stays that way.
neebelung 06-05-2006, 01:46 PM We're hoping that's the case.... as I said, everyone who was with him yesterday insists he had it on (even if he wasn't a safe rider, wearing full gear is a must for group rides anyway)....
Several of us are working with a local new reporter who wants to do a piece on him, so hopefully we can clear up the misconception about the lack of helmet....
JLBusa 06-05-2006, 02:37 PM first pic is the turn.

the damage was worse then the pics really show.
Gas Man 06-05-2006, 02:57 PM Not really...that R6 looks F'ed up!
How fast were they going?
Scissors 06-05-2006, 03:23 PM Is it possible he had it on, but forgot to strap it so that it could have come off in the crash?
JLBusa 06-05-2006, 04:39 PM not real sure how fast they were going, if i had to say maybe 50-70. :dthumb: Me and another guy on a 636 made the turn with no problem in front of them.
thirdgenlxi 06-05-2006, 07:41 PM Wow... I'm terribly sorry to hear this tragic news. RIP fellow rider :sadwave: My sincere condolences go out to all his friends and family. I know it's not an easy situation to deal with, and there really are no words to express the emotions one feels at such a time. In time it will get easier to deal with, but in the meantime just keep your chin up and know that he's in a better place, where he doesn't have to deal with any of the crap that goes on in this world. His body may be gone, but his spirit will live on forever in each and every person that ever knew him. Godspeed :angelhap:

This is the same turn where the guy died?
neebelung 06-06-2006, 08:31 AM One of the local news outlets has updated the article on CD.... and his memorial is scheduled for tomorrow. We're also working on putting together a ride in his honor, to benefit his children....
