Need Help Prepping for a Track Day!

My wife got me a track day and now I need to get ready. I was going to do the following:

BIKE:
1. New Tires - Do I get race or street tires? (I need tires anyway) Guy in the shop said plenty of folks in town ride race tires no worries. However, I thought these had to be at temperature to perform. Anyone have a set of wheels for a CBR600 F3 they want to sell?

2. Safety wire filters, nuts, etc.

3. Change coolant to water wetter or something similar.

4. Tune up my bike.

5. Stainless brake lines.

6. Tape / remove lights, mirrors, etc.

7. Frame / swing arm sliders.

ME:
1. Leathers. Local shops seem to be lacking when it comes to selection. Have people had problems sizing leathers? The companies all seem to have their own take on what a person should look like.

2. Back protector. How much room should I leave in the chest of the leathers when sizing for this? (i.e. if my riding jacket is a 42 should I buy 44 or 46 leathers to fit a back protector?)

3. Boots. Figure it is time to upgrade the work boots...

4. Already have a helmet and gloves.


Anything I am missing??

I know many courses have bike available to ride, that are track ready...however, when using your own ride..are these mods suggested or dictated ?

I know of course you wanna have the proper gear, and 86 the mirrors..however..what about the rest?

Update...Wow..just read that prep site, that Shan posted...sounds like alot of basic common sense stuff for the most part. Think I'll stick to riding there's..that's alot of wear and tear on my main ride, that could end up costing me alot of cash in the aftermath. :shock: I've yet to do a track day, but hopefully soon!! Let us know how you it goes!

Some is dictated (i.e. cannot run anti-freeze, tires have to be 75% or better tread, glass must be taped or removed, etc).

Other stuff are things I want to do to have more fun (i.e. brake lines - I have been getting brake fade on spirited street rides lately and don't want to be worried about my brakes on a track day). Also, this is a great excuse to get bike parts past the wife... :bike:

Make sure you get enough miles on the new tires before going to the track. I'm sure you know that you want to break tires in gradually, no hard turns immediately.

Tires..yep need those. I've been hearing great things about Pilots.

Safety wire...most track days require very little. Oil fill, oil drain plug, oil filter. You can buy predrilled plugs thru lockhart. You can use a big hose clamp on your oil filter or buy a K&N oil filter which comes with a predrilled nut on the end of the filter.

Coolant....Engine Ice...Engine Ice not Purple Ice. If you use water wetter you will have to take it out in the winter if your weather gets too cold.

Tune up is always good. But I do it every year....

Stainless brake lines...very nice but not needed for the track. I would suggest flushing your fluid brake fluid with some good synthetic. Also, a side note, don't put the new lines on unless you have plenty of time to get use to them first before going to the track.

Tape/Mirrors....remove mirrors, tape over all lights. You need to use blue painters tape first. Then if you want to look cool. You can use a colored duct tape...

Frame sliders....should have a set of FS and swing arm sliders on at all times. They save alot of $$ in a crash.

YOU....

Good leathers...jacket and pants....make sure they zip together. A set of knee pucks would be nice in case you feel like heatin it up.

Back protector...a must at most tracks. This means above and beyond your protector in your jacket. You can find nice ones on ebay.

Gloves...are suppose to be 3/4 length...

Helmet...go composite. Only way to go for track and street.

In the Denver area this summer, every Tuesday is Ladies Night at Second Creek Raceway. $45, plus full gear. No safety wire or taped glass needed. Ladies only, but they have cars races and bike races. 5pm till dusk.

Every Thursday is motorcycles only (men and women). $45, 5pm till dusk.

Every Wednesday, $30 will get you as many runs as possible at Bandimere (1/4 mile) drag strip. Helmet and leather jacket required. 4-9pm.

In 1984, when they first came out, I ran a Ninja 600 and 900 (not mine) at Second Creek. If you are nearby, it is a great track.

How tough is the "tech inspection"? Can you just wear a wig on Tuesdays or would it require shaving and stuffing your shirt too? :shock:

That is only if you are using street tires. Race tires you can hit the track and after one or two hot laps (depending on how brave you are) there is adeqate enough heat generated in them. Pirelli has a great tire out right now that is a track day tire. It's a compound that is between a race tire and a street tire, and that's what we put on our customer's track day bikes (those that don't want race tires). They are excellent.

A must have for track days: leathers, helmet, back protector, gloves, boots. Do not skimp on safety gear just so you can do stuff to your bike. Make sure you are ready to do it right. Although I personally feel the track is much safer than the street, your speeds are generally higher and crashing is NOT fun...believe me. You will be glad you spent the extra $$$ when a crash happens.

Safety wire: most track day orgs have minimal safety wire requirements, and it's very easy to do yourself. We personally safety wire everything, because stupid stuff happens that people don't think about. When running at higher speeds for lap after lap, you'd be amazed what will wiggle it's way off your bike.

this is a little off the topic but has anyone heard of WERA or CCS racing series i was thinking about going to an Ed Bargy racing school. its like 200 bucks for a 2 day thing and you get a racing license. anyway has anyone done/heard about this type of thing??? now back on the topic the only thing that i didnt see listed was rear sets (they may drag) and a steering damper(depending on the quality of the one you have)

WERA and CCS are the two most well-known club racing series' in the U.S. right now. That is where the majority of racers at the club level race. If you take the ed bargy school, which I hear is excellent, you can then run WERA or CCS if you purchase a license from them and if the ed bargy school is considered a "legal" school to get your license through. Different organizations take different schools...you just have to read the rule book for each org.

We used to race WERA for about four years, but have switched over to CCS/FUSA. Different organizations have different pros and cons. Both organizations have a BBS, so you may want to browse those, as well. Also, if you have never been on the track, you may want to consider doing an STT or NESBA track day a few times first.
