fuel gauge doesn't work

I just bought an 02 f4i the other day and realized when I turn the bike on, the gauges do their thing and what appears to be a digital gas gauge on the cluster flicks on for a second then shuts off.

Looked around on the bottom of the tank and doesn't appear that anything is unplugged.............any suggestions?

Can you post a pic of what is flicking. That might help.

Does the F4i have a reserve switch? I didn't think injected bikes had one.

The SV has a Fuel warning light that blinks when you have around 1.2 gallons left, and it's supposted to go on solid at .8 gallons. There is no switch or reserve tank.

Do what I do... When it starts sputtering, reach down and turn it to reserve... I got a good 20 miles or more on reserve if I am not killin' it...

It may have a vacuum actuated switch... and the reserve is not a separate tank... it's just a longer hose...

Actually, a reserve isn't a hose... its just a higher point on the petcock screening. No hose though.

FI bikes don't use a reserve... no reason. They will have a fuel light. Most of the time like Pucky said. Blinking at one level and solid at "get ready to push". Some just come on solid. If you check your owners manual it will tell you at what point the light comes on.

Now... question... when you start this F4i. Does that light go off? Is the gas tank full?

I don't know about the '02 models, but my '06 F4i has the same basic deal. Basically, what the indicator is is your "reserve" gauge. When you get down to the point where a low fuel light would come on, the indicator comes on with full bars, saying "get to a gas station". Then the bars start ticking down showing how much reserve you actually have left.

Hope this helps

quick question does it have a "fuel gauge" not a light but an actual gauge? if it does and that is whats not registering then the first thing to check it the sending unit. that is usually the first thing to break with fuel gauges.

F4i's dont have a "fuel gauge" just a low fuel warning light. they also dont have a petcock to change to reserve, because they're fuel injected and the only bikes that have petcocks are the carbed ones, like the F4, or F3. there may also be an FI light that comes on if something in your fuel delivery system is not working right.

Well today I finally had the reserve light come on (I'd been keeping it topped off till now) So I can shed some light.

Basically my other post was correct. Full tank is no display on your instruments. Once you get down to the "reserve" (in quotations because there's no petcock) the RES light pops on with 4 bars. As you start burning your reserve fuel, the bars will start blinking, then disappear, one by one. I haven't done it, but I'd assume that when you run out of bars, your engine probably won't be working anymore from a lack of juice.

Hope this helps
