Rumor: Honda wants to buy Harley Davison

Harley shares rise on buyout speculation
June 22, 2007

NEW YORK --Shares of Harley-Davidson Inc. rose Friday on speculation that Honda may be looking to buy the iconic motorcycle maker.

Over the past 52 weeks, Harley-Davidson shares have traded between $50.74 and $75.87.

Edward Aaron of RBC Capital Markets Corp. said a buyout by Honda would be "highly unlikely" for both regulatory and cultural reasons.

"This speculation is unfounded, in our view, and is likely to subside," he said, referring to a rumor first reported on a trading Web site.

In a note to investors, Aaron said he's fielded "a number of inquiries" about a leveraged buyout of Harley-Davidson in conjunction with the rumor. While "more plausible" than a merger with Honda, he said, "the math behind such a transaction is not highly compelling."

"Harley is already a very well operated business with a high margin profile," Aaron wrote. "Without the ability to generate significant structural margin improvement from current levels, it would be difficult for an leveraged buyout investor to pay a meaningful premium to the current price and generate a suitable return."

Bob Klein, a Harley-Davidson spokesman, said the company does not comment on market speculation.
Interesting... but I would think much like the rumor of Ducati. That anything like that to HD would kill alot of its market base. They have coined themselves on the buy American, the dvistation to that would be un-measurable if Honda bought it out!

Why, alot of HD's are already built with Japanese parts. Its just most of the people who buys HD's are too stupid to know it.

I don't see this happening. I would take a Goldwing over a HD any day of the week. Why would they need to buy any of HD? Unless they want Buell?

you couldnt give me a goldwing. Might as well just buy a convertible caddy cause thats all a GW is, especially now they come with those horrid looking training looking wheels.

I'd take a HD any day but I'll still have a SB too.

I;ve seen older ones with training wheels. It looks freakin rediculous. There is one guy around here that has them on his goldwing and I've riden behind him a couple of times. WHen he turns the inside wheels comes up off the ground abour 3-4 inches. It looks retarded. Even my wife laughed when she saw the guy one day when we were in the car.

It's like the article stated:

HD makes plenty of money as it is and their bikes have a strong resale value. There is little incentive for another investment group to acquire the company if their goal is to turn it into a better profit machine. Harley sells damn near every bike they make, along with lots of extra chrome do-dads and leather vests. They've pretty much saturated their corner of the market... it's a totally different story for them now than how it was in the AMF days.

And....

I'm pretty sure that the folks over at Honda know that the customer base would not be supportive of a "ferin" company taking over the Motor Company.
