2008 Honda CBR1000RR Review

Motorcycle.com reviews the 2008 Honda CBR1000RR. Be sure to read the article and check out the video, as well. We would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on the bike along with the article, so be sure to post your comments and feedback within this thread

Ah, a new Honda literbike. Lighter, of course. Faster, too. And with a bit more than 110 horsepower making its way to the rear wheel, this CBR is a rocket!

“Huh? Dude, the 2008 CBR1000RR better have more power than that!”

Indeed it does, but I was flashing back a decade to the first press launch of my motojournalist career. The changes made to the 1998 CBR900RR made it the best big CBR ever, and I was awed by how fast yet controllable that new scalpel was.

I think the new Fireblade is hott The looks grow on you (I must admit I wasnt too moved on the new body when I first saw it but now I like it alot) and I would rather the new fireblade over the 600rr any day of the week.. I guess I would rather a bike be more go than show. Plus look how light it is 435 wet... that is 600cc weight right there.

I like the nice rounded lines, I think the nose looks great. Very MotoGP-ish. The Kawi is way too pointy, too many sharp angles. Reminds me of a porcupine or something.

I agree that they new stylings of the CBR are a little...well different. But after seeing the videos and reading as many reviews as I can lay my eyes on, it really does made sense. The reason for all the curves and lack of angles it to reduce "form drag". This form drag is caused whenever you have an intersecting angle, with a 90 degree angle causing the most drag. With sharp angles, the airflow over the bike goes from a smooth fast laminar flow (good) to a slow turbulent airflow (bad) because the two intersecting planes (and therefore 2 different direction of airflow) meet and cause the turbulent flow. Thus causing the bike to be slowed down. Also, having protruding angles increases drag because areas of high and low pressure are formed, much like how an airplane flies, and (to make a long complicated explanation short) because of this pressure differential drag increases.

Now, Honda claims the smooth edges will help aerodynamics of controllability and maneuverability. I think 90% of the population will probably never reep the benefits of this because in order to truely feel a difference you probably have to be bookin around a corner at 80-90 MPH. But for the track day goers/racers out there, any addition of maneuverability would be a huge plus!

Hope this lends a little method to the madness. I personally liked the 06-07 design better at first, but the 08 has really grown on me! So much so, that I sold my old bike in preperation to buy an 08 cbr! Ill take mine in red and black please!
