Raising funds for a fallen rider and family

Hey everyone, we recently had a tragic accident locally and our riding community is putting on a fund raiser for the downed rider and his family this weekend. I am throwing this out here in the hopes of rallying more than just the local community for either help or thoughs and prayers for Ty and his family. If anyone can manage donations for the cause that would be AWESOME, but even if you can't, your best wishes will have a profound effect on the family. Donation and forum details are posted at the bottom.

TIA, Everyone!

Northwest Biker Community Rallies to Support Injured Everett Man

SEATTLE, Wash., June 22, 2006 – Following the recent motorcycle accident where 35-year-old motorcyclist Lee “Ty” Bordenet of Everett was critically injured, the Pacific Northwest Riders (PNWRiders.com) announced today a fundraising event for Ty and his wife who is seven months pregnant.

Bordenet, an expecting father and motorcycle enthusiast, was riding his 1998 Ducati on I-5 northbound Monday, June 19 during rush hour when his motorcycle was struck from behind by a vehicle. He was knocked off the bike, where a van struck him as he was lying in the roadway. Although he was wearing a helmet, he sustained traumatizing injuries and remains in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center. Already, the cost of his hospital visit amounts to over $30,000, according to Harborview staff. Rehabilitation at the facility costs $10,000 per day, a likely fate for Ty.

To assist his family with expenses, PNWRiders.com has scheduled a spaghetti feed and car/bike wash at noon on Sunday, June 25th at Renton Motorcycles located at 3701 E Valley Rd. in Renton. The event kicks-off at 9 am with a motorcycle safety awareness ride that will travel from Renton Motorcycles to Harborview and back. Additionally, items donated by local motorcycle vendors will be raffled off. Tickets can be purchased on site for $5 each.

Members of PNWRiders.com have also set up a benevolent account at Cascade Bank for Ty. Those wishing to contribute may visit any Cascade Bank branch and make a deposit to account number 5602100669 or mail a donation to the Lee Tyrrell Bordenet fund at: Cascade Bank, 2902 228th Avenue SE, Sammamish, WA 98075.

“You take care of your own whether you know them or not,” said Cherie River, a witness to the accident and vocal member of PNWRiders.com. “You never leave a man down. It’s part of the brotherhood of riding.”

In the past ten years, motorcycle fatalities have been on a steady upward increase, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP). In 2005, there were 73 motorcycle fatalities in Washington State, up from 35 in 1993, the worst year on record since the motorcycle helmet law was reinstated in 1990, reports WSP.

Best wishes to he and his family....

We just had a poker run/benefit ride for the children of a fallen rider yesterday, and it was a huge success. If you decide to organize such a thing for your friend, shoot me a PM if you need any help/have questions. We raised over $4,000 yesterday, and have had another $2,000 or so deposited directly into the account we set up for the children. The outpouring of community support has been astounding.

So we managed to pull in $4700 from the carwash/BBQ/raffle yesterday afternoon. We're still waiting for a tally on the bank account. It was a great event.

The rider woke up on Saturday, was able to wiggle his feet/toes and squeeze his wife's hand..so things are looking up. This guy's a fighter, so we're hoping for the best here. Thanks Everyone!

There was massive hemmoraging in his head after the accident, plus a couple of small strokes while he was out. So the Dr.s are pretty sure that there's going to be some permanent brain damage, but we won't know any more until he recovers a bit.

I'll let you know more as we find out more

Here's the latest update:

Ty is talking and laughing. He laughed tonight while I was on the phone with his mom!! (ok, more of a deep grumble/chuckle) She made me have chills all over when she told me this.

"i love you"

he said his sister's name, Michelle...
he said lot's of different things, "baby girl", "trucker butt" (a little funny story with this one), "cold", "i don't know"

to those who were at the fundraiser... there were two guys grillin... the white guy is Bill, good friend and like Ty... he is a manager at Speedy Auto Glass,he drove by the scene not long after it happened... the black guy is Jordan, a best friend since childhood... Ty was being taken for testing and being wheeled away... his eyes were closed but upon hearing Jordan's voice, they opened. His eyes are clearing up and it seems he is starting to focus more.

He has an infection in his lung that has caused him to have a fever the past few days. He has suffered brain damage, from the strokes, to the part of the brain that effects personality and comprehension skills. He is partially paralyzed on the left side of his face and the prognosis for his left arm is not good. He had only been told by the family that he was in the hospital and that he was in good hands. Today, Teresa told him why he was in the hospital... he started crying... the nurse came over and calmed him down. It was bad news yesterday as they received news about the extent of the brain damage but today has turned out GREAT. They were worried about the motor skills but the fact he can talk and undestand things is great. The speech is garbled and slow but can be

Well, here's some good news in the latest update. This guy is one TOUGH S.O.B...Keep in mind, the first car that hit him was a Dodge Magnum @ approx 45-ish and he's walking (assisted) two weeks later.

I can't wait to meet this guy, what a fighter!! I didn't think he would make it through the night and Teresa was even told by the cops that they didn't think he would make it... and now look at this.

(update from Teresa)
Hello and thank you again for your thoughts and prayers…they are working! We have had some up and down days and today was definitely and up day.

Tomorrow marks two weeks and Ty has made amazing strides.

In fact, today, he made some strides of his own! We got him out of bed and he WALKED with a little help for balance from his bed to his room door and back again. Considering what his body has gone through (including his brain) this is amazing progress. He was also very talkative today. He asked how long he had to be at the hospital, said he was ready to go, asked how far along I was now, (30 weeks) and a lot of other questions and comments. (Including a bad word when the respiratory therapist was jamming a tube down his throat.) I never thought I would appreciate that so much!

He is so determined and is doing so well.

We are still keeping a schedule for visitors, so I’ll let you know when we are ready for more. (Under advisement from rehab psych about over-stimulation)

Right now he is dealing with Aphasia, which means that he is more than likely getting everything we are saying whether we are talking to him or amongst ourselves, it’s just really hard for him to get his words out and it’s VERY frustrating for him. But when he hears the nurse next door tell her patient about a glucose test and then asks me what it is, I tell ya, that’s some good hearing and comprehension.

Thank you again for your continued support.

That is awesome to hear! I am keep all of our fallen riders and soldiers in my prayers. The cussing at the nurse would be one of my first things to say if I was him as well.
