car tire question (quick)

Sorry, i know this off topic and not bike related but i don't know who else to ask, haha. I have no life.

My wife has a Subaru AWD car, NTB called and said that it was a pin prick size hole on the top of the sidewall and it is non-repairable. They have the tire in stock but said because it is an AWD car we should replace all 4 since the other 3 tires have 9/32 tread and the new one would have 11/32 the others would try to spin more to catch up and that can screw things up. which would mean her flat tire just busted us $900

Does that sound right? I have zero experience with this kind of stuff. Help!!!

I dont have any idea if that would be true or not. while it cant hurt to put new tires on it, when they're costing to the tune of a grand I'll say just put the one tire on for now.

life is but a way of killing time until you die. why care how you live, just have fun while you can.

NO buy one it is not a positive traction car. They are not all turning at the same time under power.
Plus 2/32nd isnt enough to change a gear ratio

I could understand how that would put the tires under stress with a locked Diff./No Diff, But not with a LSD or Viscous Coupling/Clutch Based. All tires are turning at different speeds. ....Explanation anyone?????

Why not jus patch it up? I dont see why a pin prick hole on a tire would be non repairable? ..... I did it at the shop tons of times. Pin hole is a perfect size. IMO

That's bull$hit... I manage a NTB up here in MA and the ammount of difference in a tire that has 9/32nd tread and 11/32nds of tread is a millimeter and a half... that will not hurt your all wheel drive system. "However" I always type a note on customers invoices stating that all tires should be the same tread depth to cover our ass incase someone has a problem doen the road and tries to come after us to pay for it.

HERE'S A TIP TO SAVE SOME CASH.. NTB GUARANTEES THE LOWEST PRICE SO GO ONLINE TO www.tirerack.com and print out the price of the tire with shipping and tell them you want them to beat it.

I use to work in a tire shop. Don't buy all four, dude. Your car isn't THAT high performance where it would matter. Honestly I'd call around and see if any local shops have used ones. But if the hole is on the shoulder the patch wouldn't stick as good and there's a chance that the patch would break lose. So they are right about that.

Sorry it took me so long to get back. According to subaru's spes, the difference between the 11/32 and 9/32 is like borderline to "in spec" so they are saying I need to have all 4 tires the same to maintain the warrenty because of the potential driveline problems it COULD create. My extended warrenty i bought (hush, you can yell at me for that later) covers road hazard so the one tired is covered for sure. I'm arguing that if subaru says I have to replace all 4 tires when I replace one, then they should apply the road hazard to ALL the tires. The dealership actually agrees with me on this but it is a 3rd party warrenty dealer backed by subaru. We will know more tomorrow when their offices are open.

As far as repair, the hole is right on the corner of the tire where the treat meets the sidewall. That is why they said it isn't repairable.

I have read other options of buying a single new tire and having it shaved down to match. Again, we will find out more about this tomorrow when we can make some more phone calls.

Also, thanks for the price matching idea, I will definately do that cause no matter what I'm at a minimum of buying one tire. I just don't want to take the chances of voiding my warrenty on anything else cause I didn't replace all 4. Thus the reason for including the dealer in all this mess.

thanks for all the advice so far

WOW! your getting yanked. I cant believe it isnt fixed yet. Buy one tire and never tell the warrenty company jack, if you have trouble down the stretch. They would never mic your tires to see if you changed just one in the past.

Racers shave down the thread on new tires all the time. Some shop in your area has to know how to do that. Then it will maintain your warranty.

Monday morning update . My wife just got off the phone with the warrenty people who told her to relax. The tires are actually covered $300 per tire not the $150 listed on the warrenty aggreement, and it covers all 4 tires if that is what is required.

So as it turns out, whether it is all bs or not, we are getting a free roadside assistance tire change and 4 new tires for $0. I'll take that.

even better, since I'm going through the dealer for the tires, the replacements will be under the warrenty still.
