Scary - GatorADE was to take down plane

Explosive Gel Was to Be Concealed in Sports Drink
August 10, 2006 1:56 PM

Richard Esposito Reports:

The suspected terror plotters arrested in Britain had planned to conceal their liquid or gel explosives inside a modified sports beverage drink container and trigger the device with the flash from a disposable camera.

ABC News has learned exclusively that the plotters planned to leave the top of the bottle sealed and filled with the original beverage but add a false bottom, filled with a liquid or gel explosive. The terrorists planned to dye the explosive mixture red to match the sports drink sealed in the top half of the container.

This, they thought, would ensure that they would be able to pass through security -- even if they were asked to unseal and drink the beverage.

The flash in a disposable camera has enough electrical power, they apparently believed, to set off the homemade explosive.

There are any number of homemade or modified commercial liquids that would have made effective explosives, with enough energy to damage or destroy a plane.
I'm glad they keep foiling these plots.

You guys and gals rock!

As far as changing my habits, ala avoiding flying, private jets, etc... Remember folks you are more likely to get killed crossing the street (or riding your cycle) than in a terror attack... It's not like we live in Fallujah or something.

Our government and media feed us fear every day... The terrorist know this... and they know it's working... Americans are scared...

I for one am not changing the way I do things, however I will admit that I pay much more attention to my surroundings anytime I am in public since 9/11.

You know what scares me more than terrorists... Americans.

Heck yeah! The commercial airline business is one of, if not THE, most horribly run industry in the US... If it weren't for the government constantly pumping money into these companies we wouldn't even have the option to fly... If I was a pilot, I would not even consider working for the commercial organizations.

Well as an airline pilot and having a few minutes to rant here is my thoughts on the airlines. 1. it's not exactly that the airlines are run that poorly, yes they do have their problems with managment but alot of companies have those as well, but you also have every news agency in the world blabing on and on everytime there is the least little accident (most of the time they don't know what in the hell they are talking about) which adds to the fears of the common everyday joe. Add that to the fact that for the last few years their was a glut in the industry after 9/11 and now that the capacity has been cut back so that the airlines can make money by raising ticket prices everyone moans and groans about how much it cost to fly blah, blah blah. If ya don't like it don't fly pay $3+ dollars a gallon + 10 hrs driving and quit complaining about things you don't know any thing about.

rant over.

The media in this country is horrific... No real accountability to the truth, freedom to spin information in whatever manner they see fit, and the constant pandering of useless information with no basis of proof, let alone a purpose, except to alarm people... ie. Killer bees... Remember that crap 5 or so years ago?

Back to the airlines...

The industry was experiencing major losses before 9/11... That day just exacerbated the already grave situation... US Airways, Delta, Northwest, and United have all filed bankruptcy... Some more than once... Most analysis I have seen says this would have happened without 9/11, it was only a matter of time... Not to mention the industry exceeded pre-9/11 passenger levels a couple years ago, and half the bankruptcies were filed after this time...

Biggest difference between then and now as I see it is effeciency... Everytime I flew pre-9/11... HUGE plane... half full if you're lucky... Now... almost all the seats are full...
