Let's Say I Break Into Your House...

We had a...um...spirited ...discussion about the immigration...er...situation in this country...One of the ladies in the office explained her view this way...

Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration.

Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely.

Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.

Let's say I break into your house.

Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave.

But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors; I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house).

According to the protesters, not only must you let me stay, you must add me to your family's insurance plan, educate my kids, and provide other benefits to me and to my family (my husband will do your yard work because he too is hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part).

If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my right to be there.

It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself. I'm hard-working and honest, um, except for well, you know…that breaking in part…

And what a deal it is for me!! I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of selfishness, prejudice and being an anti-housebreaker.

Oh yeah, and I want you to learn my language so you can communicate with me.

Does this just about explain it?

whats more, those that hurt the cause by paying these people to do the labor that they proclaim "americans wont do..". they forget to mention theyre only willing to pay the bare minimum or less..

i live in a area that gets overrun by buses full lettuce pickers once a year because the farmers(that already are given subsidies/welfare) arent willing to pay proper wages for handling crops..
proper wages = minimum wage for picking goards, fruit etc...

the farmers arent required to pay anything to the state or federal govt. because the total income per slave isnt enough to tax and they are allowed to write off what was spent as upkeep of sorts..

you wont get a complaint from the slaves.. as they may cause a friend or family member deported before the season is out..

While I agree with your point, your metaphor is flawed... It's way over-simplified...

That being said, I would like to add...

We are a nation of immigrants... We should have open arms to people from other countries, afterall that is the American way. Simply put, it is the basis on which this country was founded. If we did not allow immigration, well... I wouldn't be here and, unless you're a 100% full-blooded Native American, you wouldn't be here either... HOWEVER, this we are not living in the 17th or even 20th century anymore. Forget the economic arguement and realize that allowing people to come into this country undocumented puts you, me, and everyone else living here in danger. I am not a fan of 'big brother', but when people can walk into this country and we have absolutely no idea who they are, what criminal past they may have, or even the fact that they are here... It's scary. While this does not in any way guarantee security, it does mitigate some risk.

Further... Why is it that when an illegal... lemme repeat that... ILLEGAL... commits a crime here in the United States and is convicted, do they not get sent back to their country of origin? Should they stay in our jails? Possibly, but that's not my concern at this point... Should they be released back onto OUR streets once they have finished their prison terms? Does it make any sense to reward someone who obviously has zero disregard for our laws the privilage to live in our country? Hell no... That is simply retarded.

For all the other countless reasons that we need to get this under control... If anyone has a decent argument stating why these people should be allowed to come into this country, undocumented and illegally, I will be more than happy to hear it...

I think the metaphor works, if we were wanting to kick people out that we invited in and gave part "ownership" of this country to out then I'd have a problem, as would everyone but Native Americans. I don't know about you but I'm a citizen and my great-granparents used legal and legitimate channels to gain their citizenship when they came over on a boat from the Netherlands.....but we're talking about dealing with people that aren't invited or wanted (other than by cheap ass farmers). They are breaking our laws and they should be punished along with those that help them (aiding and abetting is a crime too!)

1) I say we start by punishing the people that hire illegals, this will be the most effective, viable, and efficient tool that we could ever use. Screw putting up a multi-billion dollar fence, lets hit 'em where it counts, take away any chance of getting a job unless you're a citizen or have a valid green card.
2) Next, we start deporting illegals and while we're at it we black list them so that they have no chance of ever coming here legally (why would we invite criminals to come back?).

Alright, I'll get off the soapbox....

No the metaphor doesn't work.

For instance you break into my house. I am going to hear you forcing entry, tripping around in the dark over funiture and the minefield of toys my 18 month old has scattered and I, thinking your a threat, will unholster my 9mm and scatter your ass all over the carpet.

Then I will have the authorities come and haul what is left of your house cleaning a$$ away to wherever I won't care.

PS I am not discriminatory about whom I scatter either. Any and every race will be treated the same.

As for immigration. There is a legal process and it should be respected by any race that comes through the border. Equal Opportunity Employment, minimum wage laws, and the like should also be strictly enforced on our citizen business owners to ensure fair treatment of "legal migrant workers"
