Friday the 13th - The Most Widespread Superstition?
The sixth day of the week and the number 13 both have foreboding reputations said to date from ancient times, and their inevitable conjunction from one to three times a year portends more misfortune than some credulous minds can bear. Some sources say it may be the most widespread superstition in the United States. Some people won't go to work on Friday the 13th; some won't eat in restaurants; many wouldn't think of setting a wedding on the date.
Just how many Americans at the turn of the millennium still suffer from this condition? According to Dr. Donald Dossey, a psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of phobias (and coiner of the term "paraskevidekatriaphobia"), the figure may be as high as 21 million. If he's right, eight percent of Americans are still in the grips of a very old superstition.
Exactly how old is difficult to say, because determining the origins of superstitions is an imprecise science, at best. In fact, it's mostly guesswork.
I believe that to a degree, in so far as making your own destiny... BUT... I do still believe luck plays into things here or there. I've said before I have notoriously good luck, even when bad things happen. The example of that I always cite is this: when I was 19 I had a VERY serious head on collision -- not my fault -- both cars totalled. I was in an ol 1985 Camry: no ABS, no airbags. I was spun 180 and landed in a ditch. And I walked away with nothing more than a bruised sternum and a sprained ankle. Call it having an angel watching over me, call it what you will. I just think I'm pretty damned lucky. :idk:
i think the choices you make affect the things that happen to an extent as well...and Karma is alive and well...but i do think the better things are going, the more you have a fall in front of you...Murphy's law i guess..sorry, i am not awake yet...
BUT, anything with a 3 in it is a lucky number for me!! I.E. my b-day is 9/3
I've never put much thought into the date until the movies came out when I was a kid. I don't think I even had a clue it was supposed to be a unlucky day, Then I was looking in the woods for a big freak in a hockey mask that might try to kill me. I cant remember anything unlucky happening to me on this date and hope to keep it that way.
as silly as it sounds, while friday 13th doesnt freak me out like it does other people...i am a firm beleiver in black cats crossing and the walking under the ladder thing...mostly the ladder...i have had many black cats so them, not so much
Have you tried their chicken breast sandwiches? I had been so stuck on the reg sliders, jalepeno cheeses, and bacon cheeses that I never tried these... Had one the other night and they are the shizznittle-bang!
ok F**k friday the 13th. I made a wasted trip to Philli today for work....nothing got accomplished, and when I got home I was headed to the gas station....It was in sight, and I ran out of gas. Fu*K!
