Saved my first life today

Snorkeling about 75 yards from shore near red mark on picture posted. I hear help, help. I look up see person going up and down yelling help about twenty yards out from me.
I swim up find female in panic state, going up and down in water, my first reaction donot let her grab you. I swim up to her right side, put my left hand in her right arm pit, lifted her up so she could breath. If I did not have fins on, no way I could have kept her up. No other swimmers are near by. Beach had about 100 people which included surfers. As I reached her I expected few others from beach to be in water to help out. I looked at beach and could see people watching, guess what not one person came to help out. Lucky for me only had to drag her 20 yards in before my feet with fins could touch bottom. Teenage girl brought her body board out about 30 yards from shore, picked up lady. Lady asked my name and thanked me, told me she did not think she was out so far I swam off snorkeling

Luck? I'd say it was because you're tall, fit and not ugly.

Have to admit when we reached where I could stand up, lady asked are you walking on ground. Since fins added foot or so said yes, she said you must be tall She must think I'm 7 foot tall 6'2 for me

In lifeguard training, they teach you how to deal with people that panic and fight you when you're saving them.

You basically go under water, and drag them with you, pushing their arms off of you. After you get them unhooked from you, you shove them away, and make another approach.

People that are struggling to stay afloat don't particularly like hanging onto someone that's not floating.

That actually happened to me and a couple of my buddies at Myrtle Beach two years ago. We were walking along the beach and some women run up to us and ask us to help. There was a lady and her two kids out in the ocean stuck in the rip tide. I was outta breath by the time we got them in. They should have known better though the red flags were out because there was a hurricane off the coast at that time. Live and learn i guess.

some psych/socio experts say u are more like to be saved when theres only a few people around versus being around alot of people. Group mentality sets in where everyone is waiting for someone to do something.
